Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application tiled November 25, 1914. Serial No. 874,024.
To all w11 om it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDMUND D. SANXAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yerkes, in the count of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the followin is a specification, reference being had to tie accompanyiii drawings.
lThis invention relates to new and useful im roveiiieiits in envelops and more particular y to an envelop adapted to contain insti-actions or the'like and which is adapted to be attached to a packa e sent by parcel post or express, the main o ject of the present invention being the provision of an envelop of the above character having tabs u ion each end and provided with openings ivlliereby to receive securing cords, so that the envelop containing the instructions or the like can be readily applied to a parcel post or express package.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of an envelop of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing formin a part of this application, Figure 1 is a p an view of the blank comprising my improved envelo Fig. 2 is a simi ar view taken 0 from t ie opposite side shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating the application of the envelo Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view t rough one of the end tabs; and Fig. 5 is a plan View illustrating a modified form of the invention.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a blank which includes a substantially reetangular central portion 1, which forms the body of the envelop and upon the outer face of which is to be written the address. The back of the body is closed by means of a strip 2 which is formed along one of the longitudinal ed es of the body 1 and is adapted to be fo ded on to the body. In order to close the ends of the envelop, the ends of the bod are bent upon themselves to form end aps 3 which are bent inwardly upon the body and are to be fastened to the strip 2 by any adhesive material to form the envelop. Formed integral with the body 1, opposite the back 2, is the closure flap 4 which is preferably tapered, as illustrated and is provided alorw lts outer edges with an adhesive material:` whereby it may be readily secured to the outer face of the strip 2, in order to close the envelop.
The strip 2 which forms the back of the envelo is provided at each end with extension ta s 5 provided with a central opening 6 having reinforcements 2, as illustrated, so that a cord or other fastening member may be inserted through said openings, whereby to removably attach the envelop to a arcel post or express package. Frein this it will e ap arent that when a company or mail order ouse or any other person shipping by mail or express, desires to ship a package and attach thereto instructions for the contents of the package, these instructions may be placed within my im roved envelop and the closure tab 4 seale down and the envelop attached to the package by means of a cord or other suitable fastening means, said means being passed through the opening 6, whereby the envelop may be readily attached to the acka e.
From the a ove escription taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily a parent that I have provided an extreme y simple and durable envelo which can be manufactured of a single blan of material and is provided at each end with reinforced openings formed within the extension tabs whereby the envelop may be quickly and readily attached to a parcel post or express package for containing inst'ructions or the like.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention, wherein the end tabs 8 are formed substantially the same shape as the regular form of envelop, now in use. It will be understood, however, that either form of these end portions may be used.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described this i invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is
An envelo including a substantially rectangular bodp having each end thereof bent inwardly to orm end portions, a longitudinal strip formed integral with oneside of the body and adapted to fold inwardly upon the body and be secured to the end members to form the back portion of the envelop, said back portion having its ends extended beyond the ends of the body and provided with reinforced openings, a closure flap formed integral with the side of the body opposite the' back portion and adapted to be folded over on to the back portion, and a cord adapted to be extended through the openings and passed around the package to which the envelop is applied, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses..
