IIFIED @IIMIFF PATENT @FFIQE.
TILLIAM I-I. RICE, 0F HAMILTON, MICHIGAN.
LADDER.
Application filed October 24., 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of ladders.
An object of my ladder is to provide means whereby the same may be kept from tipping sidewise when in use.
It is well known that the ladders heretofore devised have proven deficient. Often when a person is on a ladder the same tips sidewise and the person is sometimes injured. This deficiency more frequently occurs on step ladders. It is thought that the ladder I have disclosed in the drawings overcomes this defect.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my ladder. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken on line m m, Fig. 2. Fig. L is a front eleration showing the ladder closed. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the means for operating my attachment showing the means open. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the means shown in Fig. 3 closed. Fig. 7 is a detail view.
In the drawings I have shown an ordinary step ladder having the top portion 1. Secured to the portion 1 are the standards 2 which are provided with the steps 3. Pivoted to the portion 1 as shown at 4 are the legs 5. Pivoted to the legs 5 as shown at 6 and engaging the under side of one of the steps Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Serial No. 656,433.
3 is what is commonly known as a pivoted shelf. Material used by the person working on the ladder may be held on the water board 7.
Pivoted to the top portion 1 as shown at 8 are the lateral braces 9 which have the arms 10 pivoted thereto. The arms 10 are pivotally connected together as shown at 11 and as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6. Pivotally connected to the standards 2 and to the member 12 which connects the legs 5 are the second pair of arms 13. The arms 13 are connected to the connecting means 11 and at 14:. In the drawings the numeral 15 designates a suitable lock of simple construction whereby the ladder may be held open. It will be readily seen that when the standards and the legs 5 are opened the lateral braces 9 forming my safety attachment will also be spread apart.
I desire to lay great stress upon the simplicity of my device and it is thought that the advantages and novel features of the same will be appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A step ladder, supporting legs for said step ladder, lateral supports for said step ladder, arms pivotally connected with said step ladder and supporting legs, arms pivotally connected with said lateral supports, a pivot pin for one set of arms having its outer ends provided with eyes, and eye members carried by the second set of arms and pivotally mounted in the eyes of said pivot pin.
