, ing at Minburn, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Wrenches and more particularly to that class of wrenches which are known as pipe wrenches and which are provided with a handle having a rigid jaw connected thereto and a movable jaw pivotally connected to the rigid aw.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a wrench as specified which will firmly grip pipes or articles of various sizes, within the limits of the jaws, without necessitating manual adjustment and one which is simple in construction, durable, and efficient in its operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved wrench showing the jaws in a position different to the one shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a blank from which one of the jaws of the wrench is constructed. Fig.4:is a detail perspective view of a part of the wrench. Fig. 5is a detail perspective view of another part of the wrench. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the handle of the wrench and Fig. 7 is a detail plan view of a blank from which the movable jaw of the wrench is constructed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a blank which is constructed of any desirable type of sheet metal and which has one end thereof provided with a cut out portion extending inwardly into the same. The sides 2 and 3 of the cut out portion curve inwardly, forming convex sides upon the projections 4 and 5 of the blank, which are formed by the cut out portion. The blank 1 is provided with two slots 6 and 7 formed directly opposite each other and near the end opposite to that which has the cut out portion formed there- 1n. The slots 6 and 7 have substantially semicircular shaped cut out portions 8 and 9 communicating with the edges of the same, which are adjacent the outer edges of the blanks and which cut out portions communicate with the ends of the slots. The blank 1 has two circular openings 10 and 11 formed therein directly opposite each other. The blank 1 is folded or bent upon the dotted lines 12 and 18 shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and this bending forms a jaw for the wrench, and causes the two slots 6 and 7 and the openings 10 and 11 to be directly opposite to each other. When the blank 1 has been folded as heretofore de scribed, a metallic block 15 is placed between the two projections 4L and 5, formed by the cut out portion in the end of the blank and securely held therein by means of rivets 16. The block 15 has a cut out portion 1'? formed in one side and end of the same which fits over the side or edge of the jaw, formed by the folding of the blank 1, which is between the lines 12 and 13, thus aiding in securely holding the block 15 in place. A handle 20 is secured to the jaw formed by the bending of the blank 1, by having its square end 21 mounted between the sides of the jaw and securely connected thereto in any suitable manner.
The pivoted jaw 22 of the wrench is formed of a blank 23 which has a cut out portion formed in one end of the same, identical in shape to the cut out portion which is formed in one end of the blank 1; having its sides 2 1 and 25 curved inwardly so as to form convex edges for the projections 26 and 27 which are formed upon the blank by the cut out portion. The blank 23 has circular shaped openings 28 and 29 formed therein which are arranged in pairs directly opposite to each other so that when the blank 23, is folded upon the dotted lines 30 and 31 each of the openings 28 will be directly opposite and in alinement with the corresponding opening 29. A block 30 is inserted between the projections 26 and 27 end of the same. The pin 36 is inserted through one pair of the openings 28 and 29, namely the ones nearest the projections 26 and 27 and the ends of the same are upset so as to hold the bar 35 and the jaw 22 firmly connected. The pin 37 is inserted through the openings 10 and 11 which are formed in the blank 1 and has its endsupset so as to securely connect the bar 35 to the jaw formed by the bending of the blank 1. A bar 38 is pivotally connected to the jaw 22 at 39, by means of a pin 40 which is formed upon one end of the bar 38 and inserted through the second pair of openings 28 and 29 which are formed in the jaw 22. The end of the bar 38, opposite to the one which is pivotally connected to the jaw 22 has a pin 40 extending therethrough which .pin is slidably mounted in the slots 6 and 7 When the wrench jaws are in a position so that the inner end of the pivoted jaw 22 rests against the upper edge of the permanent jaw which is formed by the bending of the blank 1, the pin 40 is seated in the semicircular cut out portions 8 and when the two jaws are parallel the pin 40 is seated in the semicircular cut out portions 9 as is shown in Fig. 2. During various other positions of the pivoted jaws 22 of the wrench, the pin 40 is at different positions within the slots 6 and 7.
The inner adjacent edges of the jaws of the wrench are provided with a plurality of serrations 41 formed thereupon, so that the jaws will more firmly grip pipes or various other articles in connection with which the wrench is to be used. 'The blocks 15 and 30 formrreinforcing means for the projections 4 and 5 and 26 and 27 respectively; thereby increasing the strength and durability of the wrench. v
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation of the improved wrench will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, while in foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, it is to be understood that certain minor features of constructions, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations sheet metal pivotally connected to said bar,

In a wrench, a rigid jaw formed from a blank of sheet metal, the sides of said jaw provided with slots extending longitudinally therein, a bar pivotally connected to said jaw, a jaw formed from a blank of sheet metal pivotally connected to said bar, a second bar pivotally connected to said last named jaw, a pin carried by said last named bar and slidably seated in said slots, blocks mounted within the ends of said jaws and reinforcing the same and the adjacent edges of said jaws having serrations formed thereupon.
3. In a wrench, a rigid jaw formed from a blank sheet of metal, the sides of said jaw provided with slots extending longitudinally therein, a bar pivotally connected to said jaw, a second jaw formed from a blank sheet of metal pivotally connected to said bar, a second bar pivotally connected to said second jaw and having one end slidable in said slots of said rigid jaw, and means in said slots for retaining said second jaw in different positions relative to said rigid j an.
4. In a wrench, a rigid jaw formed from a blank sheet of metal, the sides of said jaw provided with slots extending longitudinally therein, a bar pivotally connected to said jaw, a second jaw formed from a blank sheet of metal pivotally connected to said bar, a second bar pivotally connected to said second jaw, a pin carried by said last-named bar and slidable in said slots, said slots provided with semicircular cut-out portions adjacent the ends thereof to receive said pin, whereby said second jaw will be held in a desired position relative to said rigid jaw.
