C@anni effin,
FRANK SPROUI-i, VOF])()l\lI-P]E[Al\l, KANSAS.
Letters Patent No. 113,105, dated March 28, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE EENCES.
i The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of'the same.
I, FRANK SPROUL, of Dom'phan, Doniphan county, Kansas, have invented a new and improved Portable Fence, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects 0j' the Invention.
This invention relates to a portable fence whose panels are secured at bottom withinsuitable notched sills, the top of said panels being preserved Vin their proper position by an arrangement of loops, wedges, and braces, which will be hereafter' more fully described.
Descrfiption of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of' a portable fence embodying my improvements, one of the wedges being shown as withdrawn; and
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the fence taken near theends of the panels.
General Description.
A B represent two sills,t which support the ends of the three panels C D E of the fence, which panels are provided with the customary battens c d d e.
The sill A is notched or recessed at a, so as to receive the contiguous ends of the two panels C D, but, if preferred, this notch may be omitted and the panels inserted in a casting similar to the one l) which is secured to the sill B.
Fitted within the sills A B, and near the ends of the same, are the lbraces F F', which incline toward the fence, asshown, and they are united near the top of the latter by a yoke, clam-p, or loop, which may be -of wood, as at G, or ot iron, asseen at A.
It' made ot' wood th'e'yoke should have a longitudinal slot, g, so as to allow said yoke to 'embrace the upper ends of braces F F, as seen in fig. 2.
I are wedges or keys, which, when driven in between the projecting ends of the braces F F and the clamps G H, serve to unite the dii'erent members of the fencev together andmaintain the panels in an erect position. Longitudinal displacement of the sills A B is prevented by the stakes J.
To erect this fence. it is only necessary to place the sills A B upon the ground a sufcient distance apart to correspond with the lengths of the panels, after which 'said panelsare inserted in their appropriate recesses a l).
. The braces F F are then fitted in the sills A B, the yokes G H slipped over their upper ends, and the wedges or keys I driven home, which act completes the erection of the fence.; and it can at any time be taken down in a few minutes by simply reversing the above-described operation.
If at any time the fence should become loose and shaky, either by shrinking ofthe woodv or otherwise, it can b'e restored to its original erect and rigid condition by driving in still further the adj Listing-wedges I.
Ulnem. Y
I claim as my invention- The arrangement, substantially as herein described, of the sillsA B, panels Del d', inclined braces F F',
yclamps Gr, keys I, and retaining devices a. or b, for the hand.
FRANK SPROUL.
