To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM H. REES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tabs for Perforated Music-Sheets, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved tab for perforated music sheets which tab is to be attached to the forward end of the music sheet for the purpose of permitting of grasping the end of the music sheet without destroying the paper and also to permit of readily connecting the forward end of the music sheet with a winding roller for the purpose of unwinding the perforated music sheet from one roller, drawing it over a tracker bar and winding it upon another roller, which tab is simple in construction, effective 1n use and has a swinging pivoted eye which hooks very readily upon and engages a. prong of the winding roller.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a rear view of the tapered forward end part of a perforated music sheet provided with my improved tab, parts being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a rear View of one face of my improved tab. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a cross section of the winding roller.

The perforated music sheet 1 is of any well known type and on its forward tapered end my improved tab is attached. This tab consists of a piece 2 of oil cloth or similar fabric, leather and the like, provided at each end and at the bottom which is to be folded. At the center the tab is provided with a tongue 8 which when doubled over, so that its upper end overlaps part of the body portion 2 extends some distance below the bottom edge of the body portion 2. The forward end of the sheet 1 is placed upon the inner surface of the body portion 2 to which an adhesive of some kind has been applied and then the tongues 3 are provided with adhesive or paste and folded over the bottom edge of the sheet on the back so that they will rest upon and be secured with the back surface of the perforated music sheet. also secured by the adhesive substance to the back surface of the music sheet so that thereby the tab is firmly and securely held on said music sheet. That part of the tongue 3 which is folded over, is provided directly below the bottom edge of the body portion 2, with two side edge notches 5 to receive the shanks of a substantially semi-circular metal loop 6, the straight cross piece 7 of which is placed beneath the folded part of the tongue and whereby the loop 6 is suspended from the inner side of the folded tongue 8 directly below the edge of the body portion 2. The layers of the doubled over tongue 8 are secured to each other and to the back of the music sheet above and below said loop 6 whereby a hinge pocket 9 is formed across the doubled over tongue 8 on the back and in which the straight cross piece 7 of the metal loop 6 can turn axially and very freely. By means of the doubled over tongue 3 the end part of the sheet can be moved toward and from a take-up roll 10 which has a central circumferential groove 11 in which groove a hook 12 is secured, in the bottom of the said groove, so that the hook 1:2 can readily engage the loop 6. The loop 6 is bent angularly or curved so that its free end projects beyond the rear surface of the folded tongue 8 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. To cause the music sheet to be engaged with the take-up roll 10 it is only necessary to grasp the doubled over tongue 8 and hold it and the adjacent part of the sheet at an inclination and then move the tongue 8 toward the roller 10, to bring the inner side of the sheet in contact with said roller. vVhile so doing the curved or bent metal loop 6 projects from the inner side of said tongue 8 and can pass more or less, into the groove 11 and into the path of the rotating hook 12 which enters said 100 thereby locking the forward end of the sheet to the take-up roll and causing the sheet to be wound upon the said roller.

I am aware that tabs for attachment to the forward ends of perforated music sheets are well known and have been used and I am also aware that in many cases such tabs were provided with a ring or loop for engagement with the hook on the take-up roller but said rings do not swing freely on the tongue of the tab and must be forced inward to engage them with the hook on the roller which causes them to be torn or wrenched from the tab carrying them,

instead of automatically dropping into the path of the rotating hook on the take-up roller when the forward end of the sheet is placed upon the roller, as in my device. Such prior means remained outside of the path of the rotative hook and as stated presented various greater or less diiiiculties in connecting the forward end of the music sheet with the said take-up roller.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a perforated music sheet, of astrip of flexible material secured to said sheet, and provided with a downwardly projecting doubled over tongue, the inner layers of said tongue having notches in the side edges and the two layers of the tongue being secured together above and below said notches to form a transverse pocket on the back of the tongue and a metal loop having a straight cross piece resting within said pocket, the upper ends of the shanks of the loop passing through the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five above mentioned notches in the inner layer of said tongue, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a perforated music sheet, of a strip of flexible material secured to the end of the same and provided witha downwardly extending doubled over tongue, having two opposite notches in the side edges oi its inner layer, the two layers of said tongue being secured together above and below said notches to form a transverse pocket on the rear of the tongue and a metal loop having a straight cross piece within said pocket, the ends of the shanks being in the notches and the loop being curved or angularly bent downward an outward from the back of the tongue, substantially as set forth.
