Description

M. L. KAUFMANN. REOEPTAGLE FOR CIGARS OR THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 15, 1913.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
By (a d( J'T A. ATTURNEKS' MAX L. KAUF'MANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RECEPTAGLE FOR CIGARS on THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters. ?atent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed April 15, 1913, Serial No. 761,180.
I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX L. KAUFMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of. Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Cigars or the like, of which the following. is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacles for cigars or the like and has for itsobject to provide a receptacle which will protect the cigars or the like against tampering, injury and unlawful removal and which will at the same time comprise an attractive display package. I
My improvement further contemplates constructing the receptacle in such a manner as to permit of a ready and thorough inspection of the contents Without making it necessary to in any way deface or injure the receptacle.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which, by way of example, illustrate two forms of my invention and in which- I Figure l is an elevation of one form of' my improved receptacle; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is'a cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig.1; Fig. 4 is a partial .detail elevation; Fig. 5 is a face view of another form of my improved receptacle; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section thereof and Fig. 7 is a cross-section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5. I
In the first form of my invention, as illustrated for instance in Fig. 1, the receptacle comprises a body 10 and a cover 11 hinged thereto at 12 and adapted in its closed position to frictionally engage the said body at the front'and ends as shown best in Fig. 3. In the second form of my improvement, as illustrated for instance in Fig. 5, the receptacle comprises the body 10 and the cover 11 made in two separate and detachable sections, the cover 11 in this instance fitting over the open end'of the body, 10 and frictionally engaging the same, as shown in Fig. 6. In all forms of my invention I prefer to construct the receptacle of about the same length as the cigars or similar article which it is intended to contain, and of such dimensions that it will acconmiodate'only a predetermined number of such cigars or the city, county,
like in such a way as to prevent any relative movement thereof afterthe package has been completed. In order that the contents of the receptacle may be protected against tampering or unlawful removal Ifurther prefer to seal the-said receptacle after the said contents have been introduced, which sealing may be accomplished in any desired manner as by pasting or otherwise securing a revenue stamp or the like 12" partly upon the body .111 or 10* and partly upon the cover 11 or 11 so as to bridge the joint between the cover and body whereby relative move ment between these elements can only be brought about after the stamp or other seal 12 has been broken or torn. My improved receptacle in all its forms is also constructed in a manner to permit of a ready inspection of the cigars or the like contained therein without making it necessary to mutilate or injure the package and without necessitating the removal ofsaid cigars or other contents from the receptacle. Thus in the first form of my invention the receptacle is provided with an opening 13 preferably semi-circular in form and located either on the body 10 or the cover 11 as may be desired. This opening 13 is large enough to permit the cigars or the like to be viewed and inspected and to be touched and also tested by the sense of smell if desired, and the color thereof to be readily ascertained, but is too small to permit the cigars or the like to be removed therethrough or is so located as to prevent such removal. Normally this opening 13 is covered for instance by means of a cover 14 pivoted at 15 and slidable in a rotative direction to either cover or expose the opening 13, the open position being shown in Fig. 1 and the closed position in Fig. 4. To facilitate the actuation of this cover 14 I prefer to provide the same with a projection or finger piece 16 and I further prefer to pro ide an annular bead or the like 17 which frictionally engages the periphery of said cover 14 and maintains it in either of its positions and also acts as a guide for assisting in guiding the cover 14 in its movements. Careful pivoting of the said cover upon the receptacle is thus unnecessary and any simple pivot construction may be utilized. In the second form of my invention the opening 13 is preferably of rectangular shape and is normally closed by means of a cover 14 slidably mounted in guides 1 7 located adjacent to the periphery of said opening 3 and provided with a projection or finger piece 16 for actuatingsame. By sliding or, rotating the cover 1 1 about the pivot 15 in the guiding bead 17 or by sliding the cover 14 in the guides 17 a the openings 13 and'13 may be uncovered and the cigars or the like consequently exposed to sightand so as to be capable of being touched and smelled and the color thereof to be readily ascertained, and after inspection, may again be readily covered by proper actuation of the covers 14 and-14:? so that said cigars or the like are always protected against injury, tampering and. removal and yet may be viewed and inspected when desired without inanyway destroying the appearance of-the package.
It will of course be understood that other types of openings and closing devices therefor may be provided and that said openings may be of suitable dimensions to expose a portion of the entire contents of the receptacle instead of only a portion of a part thereof, as in the illustration, it being understood that in all cases the opening is of such size or so located as to prevent removal of the cigars or the like therethrough. ,In some instances it may be found advisable to omit the cover 14: or 14: and to simply provide an opening of the kind indicated, so that the contents will always be exposed throughout a part of their extent andwill consequently always be ready for inspection.-
My improved receptacle may be made of any suitable material and ornamented in any desired Way and provides an attractive package which protects the contents and guarantees them against ltampering so that the purchaser is protected against the substitution of an inferior article and is always sure to receive the goods which he calls for. My invention also provides a convenient shipping medium, and as it contains a predetermined number of cigars or the like also provides a convenient selling and display medium, which is absolutely sanitary and avoids the necessity for handling said cigars or the like.
With'my improvement as before stated the color and fiavor of the cigars or the like may also readily be ascertained without making it necessary to open the package or break the seal thereof. Proper ventilating apertures or thelike may be provided if this should be found desirable,
for instance surrounding the guide 17 as in' dicated at 18 in Figs. and 4:of the drawlngs.
Various changes in the specific forms shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim: a v 1. A receptacle for cigars dimensioned to accommodate.v a predetermined number of cigars or the like and comprising two sections movable relatively to each other to permit a removal of the contents, one of said sections being provided in its face with an opening of a size to expose the contents to view but, to prevent'the removal of said contents therethrough and a cover movable relatively to said one section and arranged to expose or close said opening.
2. A receptacle for cigars dimensioned to accommodate a predetermined number of cigars or the like and comprising two sections movable relatively to each other to permit a removal of the contents, one of said sections being provided in its face with an opening of, a size. to expose the contents to view but to prevent the removal of said contents therethrough, an annular guide surrounding said opening and a cover rotatable in said guide to expose or close said opening,
said one section being provided with a series of relatively small ventilating apertures located about said guide.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing JOHN A. KEHLENBEGK, M. H. LOCKWOOD.
