JAMES M. ALLEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIG-NOR. TO ALLEN NOVELTY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
SGISSORS-SHARPENER.
Application filed September 8, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ALLEN, a
citizen of the UnitedvStates, residing at city accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a sharpening de vice particularly intended for sharpening edged tools, such as scissors, shears, knives and the like, the principal object of my invention being to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive and easily operated sharpening tool or device.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a scissors sharpener with a reversible abrasive block and with a movable guide for the blade to be sharpened, and which guide is mounted for operation on the abrasive block.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved sharpening device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the construction of the device as shown, 10 designates a suitable base, preferably formed of metal and having formed in the central portion of its top a slot or recess 11. A block 12 of abrasive material is positioned on top of the base 10 and is detachably connected thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a pair of ears 13 which extend up from the ends of the base and engage over the end portions of the abrasive block.
Loosely mounted on the central portion Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of ratents V Specification of Letters .Patent.

of the abrasive block is a short tubular block 14, preferably of metal which performs the functions of a guide for the blade to be sharpened, and the lower portion of this block extends beneath the block of abrasive material and through the slot 11. Formed in the top portion of this guide block 14 is a slot 15, the same being preferably inclined to a slight degree for the purpose of iving the proper inclination to the blade which is being sharpened.
When the device is used, the blade to be sharpened is-placcd in the slot 15 and moved forward and backward over the surface of the abrasive block 12, and which latter can, during the sharpening operation, be shifted slightly lengthwise in order to present a fresh surface 011 the abrasive block. In Figs. 1 and 3 a scissors blade is shown positioned on the device in dotted lines.
A device of my improved construction is comparatively simple, can be cheaply manuactured, and provides efl'icient means for sharpening scissors, shears and the like.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, a base in the top of which is formed a longitudinally extending recess, ears on the ends of said base, a block of abrasive material positioned on the base over the recess therein, which block of abrasive material is held in position on the base by said ears, and a tubular block loosely mounted on said block of abrasive material, the lower portion of which tubular block passes transversely through the recess in the top of the base, and the upper portion of said tubular block being provided with a transversely disposed inclined tool receiving slot.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 2nd day of September, 1914:.
JAMES M. ALLEN.
