To ad whom it may concern Be it known that we, WASHINGTON IW. RowLEY, Jr., and WALTER T. BRowN, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Multigraph Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide the printing drum of a multigraph printing machine with a column rule and line which will be continuous from end to end and which can be more readily applied or removed than devices usually employed for this purpose. This object we attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a face view of part of the printing drum of a multigraph printing machine with column rules and line in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line a a, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of part of one of the column rules and the retaining clip therefor; Fig. 4: is a transverse section of said column rule showing the retaining clip in elevation, and Fig. 5 is an end view illustrating a modification of one feature of the invention. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are on a much larger scale than Fig. 1.
Referring in the first instance to F i'g. 1 of the drawing, 1 represents part of the printing drum of a multigraph printing machine having the usual undercut longitudinal grooves 2 for the reception of the bases of the type of which the printing form is composed. ln machines of this character column rules and lines have heretofore been produced by setting-up successive type in proper position to produce such column rules or lines but this necessarily resulted in the production of broken lines and rules, the line being composed of a succession of horizontal dashes and the rules of a like succession of vertical dashes. In order to overcome this objection we provide continuous column rules or lines provided with clips adapted to enter the grooves 2 of the drum and serving to retain the column rules and line in roper position thereon.

line and whose base rests upon the surface of the drum and is provided with inwardly projecting bent and elastic wings 4 constituting a clip which engages the undercut groove 2 of the drum and serves to retain the member 3 firmly in position thereon. These wings mayextend from end to end of the line member 3 so as to provide a continuous clip therefor or they may be formed only at intervals throughout the length of the line member so as to provide a series of separated clips, or, if desired, the line member may be independent of the clip or clips, as shown, for instance, in Fig. 5, the line member 3 there shown having an undercut recess in its base for the receptionof the projecting head 5 of the clip 4:". A line member of any width up to the full width of the drum can be employed since it does not have to be introduced longitudinally into position from one end of the drum as are the usual type, but can be placed radially in position on the drum, the spring members of the clips yielding to pass through the contracted throat of the groove 2 in the drum and then expanding so as to engage with the undercut base of the groove, as shown in Fig. 2.
The column rules 6 are composed, by preference, of wires or strips of triangular cross section having suificient flexibility to ermit them to be bent around the curve 0 the drum and each of these column rules is held in place on the drum by means of a plurality of clips 7 each having a head 8 projecting of the rule 6, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. One
of these clips is, by preference, disposed near each end of the rule and there may be one or more intermediate clips, if desired, depending upon the length of the rule. Where a column rule abuts against a line member the end of said column rule is inwardly beveled, as shown at 9 in Fig. 2, so asto accord with the bevel of the side of said line member and where a line member abuts against a column rule the end of the line member will be beveled accordingly. This permits the impression or print-forming apex of one member to join the impression or print-forming apex of the other member, as shown in Fig. 1.
A line extending diagonally across the form can readily be produced as for instance by varying the angle of the recesses in the heads8 of the clips 7 to accord with the desired angle of the line.
' We claim:
l. The combination of the grooved printing drum'of a multigraph printing machine with a line member ,having one or more spring clips for engaging said groove and retainingsaid line'inember in place on the surface of the drum, whereby said line member can beplaced radially in position upon the drum.
2. The combination of the gropved print i-ng drum of a multigraph printing machine with a line member of triangular cross section having one or more spring clips for engaging said groove and retaining said line member in place on the surface of the drum.
3. The combination of the grooved printing drum of a multigra'ph printing machine with a column rule consisting of a flexible strip provided with a plurality of clips each having spring arms for engaging walls of the grooves of the drum and retaining said strip in-position thereon, whereby said column rule can be placed radially in position upon the drum.
4. The combination of the grooved printing drum of a multigraph printing machine with a flexible rule strip, and a clip engaging a groove of the drum and having a recessed head for receiving and retaining the base of said rule strip. I
5. The combination of the grooved printing drum of a multigraph printing machine with a rule strip of triangular cross section, and a clip engaging a groove of the drum and having a head with undercut recess therein for receiving the base of said triangular strip.
6. The combination of the grooved printing drum of a multigraph printing machine with a flexible rule strip, and a spring clip for engaging a groove of the drum, said clip having a recessed head for engaging the base of the rule strip.
7. The combination of the grooved printing drum of a multigraph printing machine with a line or column rule member having beveled sides, an abutting member having a beveled end which overlaps one of the beveled sides of the other member, and retainers engaging grooves of the cylinder and serving to hold said members 1n place thereon.
