Be it known that I, FRANK J. KADAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Marking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in marking implements particularly designed for the simultaneous application of a series of parallel lines or markings to any desired surface.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a marker including a series of crayon holders adapted for adjustable connection to a connecting plate, whereby the holders may be adjusted and secured in de-' sired spaced relation.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the construction and use of my improved marker. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective of a modified form of holder.
Referring particularly to the drawings, my improved marking device comprises a connecting plate 1, which may be of any length or width desired, and which is formed with a central longitudinally arranged slot 2. One end of the plate is provided with an operating handle 3, and one edge surface of the slot 2 is preferably provided with a series of scale marks 4.
The crayon holders, of which there may be any desired number are preferably blocks 5 of somewhat less width than the width of the plate 1. The relatively lower portion of each block is formed with a transversely extending channel or recess 6, which recess extends entirely through the block from side to side, and is preferably so arranged therein as to form one wall, as 7 of greater thickness than the other. The wall 7 of each block is formed with a threaded opening 8 for the reception of a set screw 9, the relatively inner end of which is designed to bear upon the crayon 10 inserted in the channel 6 and secure the same in fixed relation to the block. The upper surface of the block is also formed with a threaded opening 11 designed to receive a set screw 12, the stem of which is adapted for convenient passage through the slot 2 in the connecting plate, as clearly shown'in Fig. 1.
I l l In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of holder, in which the block 13 is of cylindrical shape, having a central bore 14 for the reception of a pencil 15 or similar marker, the block 13 being formed with threaded openings 16 and 17 for the reception of set screws 18 and 19 to secure the marker in place and to secure the block to the connecting plate. In use, the respective blocks are secured to the connecting plate as described, being adjusted to provide any desired spacing between the blocks through the use of the scale 4. In assembled form, the marking device may be readily drawn across any desired surface, as 20, imparting to said surface a series of parallel lines corresponding in number to the number of crayons used.
The device is particularly adapted for fabric marking, as in laying off extensions and scams on clothing fabrics. It is obvious however, that the improvement is equally useful in applying to any surface, a series of parallel lines or marks, and, of course, I contemplate all such uses, and all changes and variations from the structure shown and described that may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A marking device comprising a connecting plate, an 'operating handle therefor, said plate being formed with a longitudinally arranged slot, the surface of the plate adjacent the slot being provided with a scale, blocks connected to the under surface of said plate and of less width than the width of the late, the lower portion of said blocks being formed with transversely arranged recesses and marking devices arranged in said recesscs.
A marking device comprising a connecting plate, an operating handle therefor, said plate being formed with a longitudinally arranged slot, blocks formed with threaded openings, said screws extending through the slot and plate and engaging the threaded openings in the blocks, the lower portion of said blocks being formed with transversely extending recesses, said recesses extending entirely through the blocks from side to side and marking devices secured in said recesses.
