Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma. 2, 1915.
Application filed September 25, 1914. Serial No. 863,474.
To all 'wb am it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook,
,State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mortuary- Illuminating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for the artistic illumination of mortuary rooms, the casket containing the remains and the usual ornamental and emblematic accessories. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a ,simple and eflici'ent structural arrangement and formation of parts whereby the mortuary room illumination can be readily and effectively controlled and directed in a pleasing and artistic manner onto the casket and accessories to meet the varied requirements in different mortuary rooms, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The accompanying drawing is an elevation of an apparatus embodying a simple type of the present invention.
-Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a base member or tripod having a vertically extending hollow post 2, which in turn is provided at its upper end with a suitable clamping means such as a clamping screw 3, as shown.
4 designates a supporting stem arranged in the bore of the post 2, aforesaid, in a vertically adjustable manner and capable of being secured at any required vertical adjustment by the binding screw 3, aforesaid.
5 designates a crane arm at the upper end of the stem 4. In the present improvement the crane arm 5 has a curved formation and is divided into two branches 6 and 7,- the lower and shorter branch 6 having a hook formation at its extremity for the suspension of an appropriate emblem 8, such as a clove, crucifix or the like, while the upper and longer branch 7 carries at its outer extremity a hooded electric lamp 9 adapted to shed rays of lightupon the emblem 8 and the burial casket 10, disposed beneath said emblem, as shown. In the preferred construction shown in the drawing, the upper branch 7 of the crane arm- 5, is made tubular for the passage of the flexible conductor 11 by which the electric current is conducted to and from the electric lamp 9. The aforesaid flexible conductor may extend to a convenient electric socket in the room, or to a suitable storage battery 12, or other source of electricity, as circumstances may direct.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An illuminating apparatus for mortuary rooms, comprising a supporting base, a vertical post carried by said base, a vertically adjustable stem having movement in said post, means for securing said stem at its required adjustment, a curved crane arm on the upper end of said stem and formed with a lower and shorter branch and an upper and longer branch, means for suspending an emblem from said shorter branch, and an electric lamp carried by said longer branch, substantially as set forth. 2. In an illuminating apparatus for mortuary rooms, comprising a supporting base, a vertical post carried by said base, a vertically adjustable stem having movement in said post, means for securing said stem at its required adjustment, a curved crane arm on the upper end of said stem and formed with a lower and shorter branch and an upper and longer branch, means for suspending an emblem from sa d shorter branch and an electric lamp carried by said longer branch, said longer branch having a tubular form and adapted to receive a flexible conductor carrying the electric current to the lamp, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 16th day of September, 1914.
