ELLA S. HARPER, OF NEW BRIGHTON. NEN ICE/K.
REDUCER.
Application filed. January 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLA S. HARPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Brighton, taten Island, county of Richmond, and State of New Y rk, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reducers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to a device intended for use after childbirth.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and e'flicient device which is adapted to be worn after child-birth and which is readily adjustable to adapt the wearer to tighten the device at will so that the natural enlargement of the body due to such a condition may be reduced and th body restored to its proper form, thus dispensing with the usual devices which are cumbersome, often unsanitary, and not easily adjusted by the wearer. 1
Another object of. the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device which is thoroughlysanitary in that it can be washed and easily cleansed and which requires no stays whatever so that it is very comfortable and prevents all liability of injury to the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be worn as an under-garment and which may be utilized to iold or support other wearing apparel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device which is inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily applied and adjusted to suit the requirement of the wearer, and which covers all that part of the body which is required to be reduced or restored to its natural size.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device showing how the same is worn. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is an elevation looking at the rear, the device being spread open for the purpose of better illustrating the same. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken on the line. IVIV of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line V-V of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail perspective view show- Spccification of Letters Patent.

ing an attaching member or element which may be held to the device.
The body or member 10 of the device is in the form of a wide web suitably hemmed, as at 11, along the upper edge thereof and at 12 along the lower edge thereof to strengthen and finish the same, and at the upper portion is provided with one or more darts, as 13, to make the size at the upper portion somewhat smaller than that of the lower portion and to provide a proper finish to said member. The body or member 10 is of such a width that it will extend from the hips of the wearer to and above the waist line and under the breast so as to adapt the same to cover all that part of the wearer which is intended to be reduced and restored to the proper size and form. The member 10 may be entirely free of stays to avoid all unnecessary stiffness and at a point adjacent to the ends thereof so as to extend transversely of the body or member and in a vertical direction when the device is in use, are members or parts 1% and 15 which are secured to or formed as a part of said member 10. These members or parts 14 and 15 are located near the edges of the member 10 so as to provide overlapping flaps or parts 16 and 17 and have eves or eyelets 18 in each member through which a lacing 19 is adapted to pass, as shown best in Fig. 1. These flaps or parts 16 and 17 are adapted to overlap and cover the space between the edges of the members 14- and 15 to shield and protect the wearer while in use. It will be evi dent that the device when worn is adapted to provide a more or less wide space between the edges of the members or parts 14 and 15 to adapt the same to be readily adjusted. The lacing is so arranged through the eyelets 18 and secured as at 19 that the wearer may, by taking hold of the lacing substantially central thereof, pull the two members 14 and 15 toward each other and throughout the entire length of said members to tighten and adjust the same about the wearer. During this adjustment, the flexibility of the member 10, owing to it being made of fabric which may be light but preferably does not stretch, will draw or force the members 14 and 15 toward each other and this adjustment may be done at intervals as often as is desired by the wearer so that a gradual reduction and proper restoration of the body of the wearer is secured in a Very easy and efiective way. When adjusted the Copies of this patent may be obtained forfivecents each, by' erlcu'essing the Commissioner of Patents, r
member is secured along the upper edge thereof, as at 23, to the lower edge of the body and at one end is connected by a dart or insert 21 so that the member, when the device is in use, will .be arranged at an angle with respect to the lower edge'of the body 10 of the device. Each member 21 and 22 has a strap 25 of fabric or other material and at one end/is provided with a buckle,
as 26, throughivhich the end 27 is adapted to pass in order to be passed about the limbs of the wearer. The main part of the strap or member" may be covered by an oil or rubberized material, as 28, to permit the same to be readily cleaned and to assist in making the said device thoroughly sanitary. The device is thus properly held and is capable of adjustment both through the members 21 and 22 and the body 10 tojsuit different sizes ofpersons. I r
The body 10 of the device or garment may be provided with tabs 29 and 30 at the rear thereof and at'the opposite sides of the central portion, and these tabs may have eyes or eyelets 31 adapted to hold any article that might be attached thereto or may be used for the attachment'ofthe usual hose supporter or for any other purpose.
A tab or part 32 may be secured at the rear part of the device along'the hem 12 substantially central thereof and another tab 33 may be held to the lower part of the lacing so as to be supported thereby, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 6. The purpose of these tabs 32 and 33 are'so that any arv ticle may be attached theret0,although such parts may be dispensed with or not as preferred. From the foregoing, it will be seen that a simple and efficient device is provided which is adapted to be readily adjusted'so that it may be made to lit the body of the wearer and to be tightened in such a way as toreduce the size of the body of the wearer and restore the same to its proper shape and form; that said device is simple in construction and may be readily applied and is so constructed that no special manipulation on the part of others is required to properly use the same; that said device may be used I the body after it has been put on, leg ell-.
circling straps secured along their-upper edge to the lower edge of the'body portion," 1
and an insert or dart arranged between each strap and'the body portion whereby said straps when the'device is in use will be at an angle with respect to the lower edge of the body portion, the freeends'of said straps being arranged at the back, and meansfor adjustably connecting the ends ofthe respective straps.
