To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUonNA M. MoRonN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders or devices, the object of the invention being to provide an improved structure of this kind in which the covers are provided with edges or flanges extending in the same general direction or plane as such covers whereby they may be connected by suitable binding means to permit the loose leaf sheets held by the binding means to open flat and to be removed or inserted at any point without the removal of othersheets.
In the usual way of forming loose leaf binders of this general style the same are provided with flanges which are turned at right angles thereto, the binding means used therewith consisting of brads, tape, posts or wire, clamping the leaves so that they cannot open flat, neither can the leaves be removed at any point but only from the top orbottom of the pad of sheets held by them. If it is desired to remove a sheet from the middle all sheets infront of it must be removed and replaced again after the desired inner edges in any suitable way, a pair of sheet is taken out. The same thing applies in adding a sheet at any point other than the bottom or top. Therefore rings or archshaped holding devices cannot be used in a practical manner therewith.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end view of one form of the present improvement; Fig. 2 is an end view of a slightly different term thereof; Fig. 3 is an end view of another form thereof; Fig. 4 is a view of another form; Fig. 5 is a plan of the form shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 illustrates a form of ring which may be used in the present improvement connected to a portion of a sheet or leaf.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the difierent figures of the drawings.
In the present improvement the covers 2 and 3 may have attached adjacent to their flanges 4: and 5, one for-each cover, both of which flanges extend beyond the inner edges 7 of the covers in the same general direction or plane as such covers and into the back or binding portion 8 of the structure. In
the form shown in Fig. 1 these flanges are attached as stated in any suitable wayto the covers although obviously the covers may be of suiiicient width to form the flanges so that the back or binding portion 8 may overlap the same and be attached thereto, this being a mere reversal of the form shown in big. 1.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 it will be observed that the eovers 9 and 10 are formed integral with the binding or back portion 11, being folded upon themselves at their inner edges to form the flanges l2.
In the form shown in .tig. 3 the flanges 13 and 14: are formed in a slightly different manner, they being flexibly connected to the covers 15 and 16 while the back or binder portion 17 is independently connected to the covers themselves. In other words, the flanges in this form are flexibly connected with the back instead of being formed as one piece therewith. as shown in Fig. 2 or overlapping and attached thereto as shown in Fig. 1. This flexible joint can be obtained in a simple manner by connecting the flanges to the cover proper by suitable flexible material such as cloth or paper 18. In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the flanges are formedot metal thus providing a reinforcerably of angular form for the reception of 1 the rings. V
When the inwardly extending flanges are formed as independent members as shown in Fig. 5 they may be so carried by the grooves hereinbefore referred to as to be readily 1 shifted along the same to any desired point;
in other words, they are adjustable.
In the present structure shown the rings 24: are of angular stock and are therefore received by slots 25 of angular formation. 7
It will, of course, be understood that the flanges in the various forms shown will be provided with the necessary slots of the desired form to receive the rings. It will also be understood that-the various details may be more or less modified without departing from the scope of this improvement."
' The provision of a ring of angular stock and slot to correspond results in a material advantage in that it'will not pull out ofthe slot as a ring of round Wire would, that is to say by reason of -theangular slots, shoul ders 30 and 31 are obtained whichengage the inner face of the angular stock of the ring and so hold it in place against pulling out. 7
It will be observed that in the present im-. provement the flanges are in the same plane with the covers, that is to say the flanges project in the same general direction as do the covers.
It will, of course, be understood that instead of using the metal binding edge shown in Figs. 4 and-5, the shiftable projections 23 may be adjustable in grooves formed in the rear edges of .the cover whether these grooves be formed by metal binding members or be formed directly therein, and obviously if the projections 23 were one continuous flange as shown for instance in Fig. 3, the entire flange could be detached with the leaves attached thereto as can also be the projections 23.,
- I claim as my invention:

A loose leaf binder comprising a-pair of;-duplicate covers and aback portion connected to saidcovers at substantially the same distance from the-inner edges thereof, said- -covers having inwardly extending flanges (projecting within such back portion for, the reception :of binding rings, such flangesextending in the plane of the cover inboth open and. closed ;.positions 0f said cover.v

A loose leaf binder comprising a pair of covers,,a back f-portion' and a 'pair of flanges attached to such covers and both pro; jectmg-within such. back portion beyond the point of attachment of the back portion to the covers and both formed alike to receive binding rings therethrough, such flanges extending in the plane of' the cover in both openand closed ositions of said cover.'

A loose leaf binder comprising one or more covers, a back, a metal member secured to, the inner edge of each of-said covers, and an inwardly extending flange for the reception of binding means, said member and flange one having a guideway and the other slidable in said guideway, said flange consisting of a plurality of independent projections.

A loose leaf binder comprising one or more covers and a flange projecting from the rear edge of each of said covers in the plane of said cover, said flange and cover havin one a part overlapping the other and sai flange comprising one or more projections adjustable lengthwise relatively to the cover, each of said projections having an opening for the reception of a binding ring, said cover and projections being formed of different materials.

A loose leaf binder comprising one or more covers and a flange projecting from the rear edge of each of said covers in the lane of said cover, said flange and cover aving one a groove tor slidably carrying the edge of the other, said flange having one or more slots for the reception of a binding ring or rings.
19. A, loose leaf binder comprisin one or more covers and a flange projecting trom the rear edge of each oi said covers in the plane of said cover, said flange and cover having one a move for the reception of the edge of the ot er, whereby said flange may be detachable from its cover, said flange having one or more slots for the reception of a binding ring or rings.
