JOHN rinnnirr THATGHER, or BERGEN', New JERSEY.
' Letters Patent 112,983, dated March 21, 1871.
A IMPROVEMENT IN so'AP-msHEs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
YI, JoniN MERRITT THATGHER, of Bergen, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented an mproved Soap-Dish, of which the following is a specication.
.Natel/re and Object of the Irl/ocation.
My invention consists of a soap-'dish constructed in a manner too fully explained hereafter to 'need preliminary description, with 'a view of draining the water from the soap and rapidly drying the same, so that it may be maintained in the best condition for use, and so as to prevent waste.
Description of thevAccomJang/ing Drawing.
Figure l is a side view of my improved soap-dish; Figure 2, a vertical section of the` same; Figure 3, a side view of a cover or receptacle adapt- I ed to the dish;
Figure 4, aplan view of the same; Figure 5, a vertical section of the dish, showin how the.- cover may be used as a detachable receptac e for the soap; and j Figure 6, a section of the dish, showing both detachable receptacle and cover.
Genemt Description.
Figs land 2 represent, in its simplest form, my im-' proved`-soapdish, consisting, in the present instance, of' a circular vessel, A, voi' cast-iron, with lateral open-4 ings, l, for the admission of air, and internal projec-- tions, a a, for maintaining the soap free-from contact.
with the bottom of the dish, and at a suiicieut height above the bottom to insure a circulation of air be-l A modification of the soap-'dish is shown in iig. 5, where the soap is supported on adetachable openwork receptacle, B, resting with its upper anged edge on va'ledge in the dish, the receptacle having small projections, e, for supporting the soap above its fretted surface.
These projections e are, however, not essential, and
may, if desired, be dispensed with.
Inthis case, as in the former, the under side of the `v cake of soap is exposed to the air admitted through the lateral openings,v b. This receptacle B may be used as an ornamental cover, (see fig. 3,) in'connection with .the dish, fig. 2; or two' of ,these castings, g. 3,
may be used in connection with the dish A, oneas a. receptacle for the soap, and the other as an ornamental cover, (see iig. 6.)
I prefer to form the cover or receptacle B with a I centralv opening, j; both for purposes of ventilation` and as a means for enabling the said cover or receptacle to be readily detached from the dish by insert- -ing a nger into the opening.
I prefer to make'my improved soap-dish ofoastiron, enamaled or.japannedor coated with any anti-corrosivematerial; but the dish may be made of earthenware or of sheet metal, or othermaterial,
without detracting. from the main features of my invention. Y
0 latins.
l. 4A soap-dish formed either with or Without pro-k jections on the bottom, and having lateral openings b, i.
as set forth.
2. An open cover, B, constructed substantially as de.- scrihed, so as to serve as a cover, or cover and receptacle, tothe soap-dish A, as specified.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification iin-the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MERRITT THATOHER.
