APPLIOATION FILED JAN. 27, 1914.

CUE-CHALKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed January 27, 1914. Serial No. 814,803.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis WARDEN, a citizen of Canada, residing at Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cue-Chalkers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to chalking devices, and more particularly to the class of one chalkers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a chalking device wherein a piece of chalk is held in a convenient posi tion to permit of the one tip being placed against the chalk and the cue manipulated to apply the said. chalk to the tip, thereby obviating the necessity of the use of an ordinary chalking cube in the ordinary wellknown manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a chalking device of this character which is novel in form and convenient for use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chalking device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the chalking device comprises a guide frame or housing 5, formed with an opening 6 in which is slidably fitted the circular shaped member 7 having an external spiral groove or channel 8 in which projects a lug 9, the same being arranged within the opening 6 and projected from the housing 5 so that on exerting pressure upon the member 7 the latter will be rotated when moving inwardly through the opening 6 to a distance within the housing.
On the outer end of the member 7 is can ried a chalk holding sleeve 10 in which is fitted a piece of chalk 11 to be used for the chalking of the tips of cues. Surrounding the member 7 is a coiled expansion spring 12, one end of which is fixed to the housing 5, while its opposite end is fixed to the member 7 contiguous to the sleeve 10, and this sprin serves to normally project the member 7 from the housing, and on bringing the tip of the one in contact with the chalk 11 and exerting pressure upon the cue, the member 7 will rotate when moving inwardly for applying the chalk to the tip of the cue. Formed on the housing 5 is an car 13 provided with the usual apertures 14 for receiving fasteners so that the housing can be mounted on a pool table or other support.
The sleeve 10 is externally threaded on the outer end of the member 7 and has formed at its inner end an out-turned annular flange 15 forming a shoulder to be engaged by one end of the spring 12, while the opposite end of the spring rests against the housing. It will be noted that when the sleeve 10 is removed from the member 7 the spring can be readily slipped off of the member should the said spring become weak or broken, thereby permitting the replacing of a new spring should the occasion require.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is A one chalking device comprising a sleevelike housing, a tubular member fitted within said housing and having an external spiral channel, a lug mounted in the housing and engaged in the channel, a chalk holder detachably threaded on the outer end of the tubular member and formed with an outturned annular flange at its inner end, and a coiled expansion spring surrounding the member and having its ends workingagainst the housing and the said flange to ndrinally project the member through the housing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS WARDEN.
Witnesses:
LUZENA B. SUTHERLAND, HECTOR COWAN.
