Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed .Tune 9, 1914. Serial No. 844,051.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY D. OBRLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forsyth, in the county of Rosebud and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Truss, of which the following is a specification;
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a truss, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby, through the cooperation of a pair of springs curved upon different radii, the pressure upon the front pad may be adjusted, through the medium of a slide, or other suitable means.
' It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and the other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figures 1 and 2 are top plans showing the truss in different positions, portions of the spring coverings being broken away; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the back pad and attendant parts, portions being removed and sectioned; Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 44: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a fragmental face view of the back pad.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a main spring 1 which preferably is in the form of a flat strip of metal, there being a secondary spring 2 located on the outside of the main spring 1, the secondary spring 2 being shorter than the main spring 1. The invention includes a back pad 3. By means of securing elements 4 one end 5 of the main spring 1 and one end 6 of the sec ondary spring 2 are secured to the back pad 3. By means of securing elements 7, the
other end of the main spring 1 is attached to a front pad 8. The free end 9 of the secondary spring 2 bears upon the outer face of the main spring 1 relatively near to the front pad 8. The springs 1 and 2 are curved upon different radii, the radius of curvature of the main spring 1 being longer than the radius of curvature of the secondary spring 2. Consequently, although the free end 9 of the secondary spring 2 bears upon the main spring 1, the secondary spring tends to bow in its intermediate portion away from the main spring 1. A slide 10, in the form of a loop, is mounted to reciprocate upon the springs 1 and 2 in the direction of their lengths. The pads 8 and 3 may be provided with facings 11 of rubber or the like, including protuberances 12 which tend to permit air to enter between the casings and the body of the wearer. The springs 1 and 2 may be covered if desired as shown at 14.
When the slide 10 is moved longitudinally of the main spring 1, the secondary spring 2 is flattened out and the pressure of the free end 9 of the secondary spring 2 on the main spring 1 is increased, the free end of the secondary spring, at the same time, being moved toward the front pad. From the foregoing it will be observed that by merely shifting the position of the slide 10, the pressure upon the front pad 8 may be altered.
The springs 1 and 2 extend approximately half way around the body of the wearer and the truss may be applied to either side of the body of the wearer by a simple inversion of the truss.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A truss comprising a curved, body encircling main spring; a pad carried by the main spring; a secondary spring disposed upon the outside of the main spring and curved upon a shorter radius than the main spring, one end of the secondary spring being secured to the main spring and the other end of the secondary spring being freely movable on the main spring toward and away from the pad; and a slide independent In testimony that I claim the foregoing of the pad and movable upon both springs as my own, I have hereto aifixed my signalongitudinally of the springs, the slide conture in the presence of two Witnesses. stituting means for flattening the freely HENRY DANIEL OBRIEN. movable end of the auxiliary spring and Witnesses:
constituting means for moving said end of HARRY BUTTERFIELD,
the spring toward and away from the pad. W. J. CHURCH.
