To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'Binders, of which the following is a Specification.
My present invention relates particularly to binders employed inloose-leaf ledgers, or the like; and the primary object of the invention is to provide abinder-frame which is light, strong and capable of withstanding the stresses to which it is subjected in use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a broken plan view of a binder embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a fragmentary inner face view of the binder-back, this view being shown partly in section; Fig. 5, a fragmentary inner view of one of the post-carrying clamping-members of the binder; Fig. 6, an inner view of a clampingmember of a binder of modified construc tion; Fig. an plan view of the same, partly in section, the section being taken as indicated at line Tot Fig. 6; Fig. 8, a plan view of the binder-back in the modified form; Fig. 9, 'an elevational view of the same, partly in section, the section being taken as indicated at line 9 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 10, a transverse sectional view of the binder whose members are illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, A represents a binder-back, on which are mounted transversely slidable post-carrying clamp ing members A and A. B indicates mechanism adapted to expand and collapse the binder in a well understood manner. The clamping members A and A are joined by telescoping posts 1 in a Well understood mannen'these posts being adapted to be engaged by the removable ledger-leaves. The back A"com-prises an elongated curved plate 2 equippedon its inner or upper surface at opposite sides of a medial line with flanges 3 between which is disposed at screw-rod 4 of the'actuating mechanism B. The back ispreferably formed of cast aluminum in which are embedded longitudinal rods or wires 5 ofhigh tensile strength. The rods 5 are embedded in enlargements 6 at the outer sides of the base portions of the flanges 3. The clamping members A and A are of angular cross-section. Each compr ses a side or vertical portion 7 having an inwardly off-set upper part 7 and an inturned lower flange 7 which extends over the back A. Suitable guide connections 8 between the back and clamping members are provided in the usual manner. The sides 7 of the clamping members are enlarged at points 7; and in said enlarged portions are embedded wires or rods 9 of high tensile strength. The clamping members are likewise ofcast aluminum. The wires are embedded in the back and clamping member castings in the casting process, and are so positioned as toresist the tendency of the castings to break in use.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive, a similar, but longer, binder is illustrated. This comprises a back A and clamping members A mounted to slide transversely on the back in the usual manner. In this case, the reinforcing wires 5 and 9 are positioned as in the former construction, but are only partially embedded in the castings throughout the length of the wires. At intervals, the castings are provided with lugs 10 and 11 through which the wires extend. That is, the wires are wholly embedded in the castings at the points where they pass through the lugs. In this manner, the wires are securely attached to the castings, although not wholly embedded therein. This construction has the advantage that it is unnecessary to adopt any special expedient to prevent the wires from floating out of the molten metal while a casting is being formed, even Where very long castings are required. Nevertheless, the wires are properly positioned to impart to the castings a high tensile strength along the lines where high tenacity is required to prevent the castings from being broken in Thus, the wires embedded in the clamping members are at lines considerably outside of the axes of the clamping members; and as the mechanism which serves to close the'clamping members is ordinarily attached to .the end-portions of the clamping members, the tensile members 9 and 9 are in a position to resist breakage, which would be liable to result from the outward bowing of the clamping members.

What I regard as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is 1. In a binder, the combination with a pair of clamping members, of a back on which said clamping members are movably mounted, comprising a cast metal plate having its inner surface equipped with a pair of longitudinally disposed ribs located on opposite sides of the medial line of the plate, enlargements flanking the base portions of said ribs, and reinforcing wires 'cast in said enlargements.
2. In a binder, the combination with a pair of clamping members, of a back on which said clamping members are movably central enlarged portion of one of the sides of the member.
4. In a binder, a binder member comprising a cast metal plate with lugs at intervals thereon, and a reinforcing wire cast in such member, the wire being partially embedded in the plate and extending through said lugs.
