ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF i FORM FOR CONCRETE WLL CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December This invention relates to slip forms for the construction ofhollo'w `concrete walls.
The general object of the invention is the provisionof a construction for forms of this type, which may he manipulated easily and rapidly in the Fbuilding up of the wall, and which eliminates the necessity for special supporting arrangements for reinfcrcng members which are to be embodied in the wall structure.
A particular object is the provision of a constructionwhich facilitatesthe placing of tie rodsemployed `for the tying together et the parallel sections of the hollow wall.
Another object is the provision of animproved cradle or shield device for closing the joint between adjacent sections of the form sheathing, which shield device will facilitate the placing "of the tie rods and may be manipulated in common with the other portions of the form in the elevating operation.
"Other and lfurther objects ot 'the invention will be ointed out or indicated hereinafter, or Wil be apparent to one skilled in the art upon an un tion or its employment in practice. y
In the drawingi'orming a part of this specification we illustrate one structural form in which the invention may be embodied, but it is to be understood that this is presented by way of example only, and that the invention as defined in the appended claims is not to he regarded as limited to this particular embodiment or the details thereof.
In said drawing Fig. 1 is a sectional elevationof `a sli lorm embodying our invention showing t e manner in which itis utilized in the `construction of a hollow concrete wall.
"2 is a detail in the natureof a horizontal section through the end portions of adjacent inner form sections, this section being taken `on approximately line 2-2 of Fi iig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the inner form sections `and the joint shield or cradle associated therewith.
Fi l is a perspective view of a joint shiel or cradle.
This invention relates to that type oi con crete wall forms which are customarily desers'ta'nding of the inven-.

ignate'd slip forms, and which are characterized bythe fact that they are arranged so to be elevated at intervals during the building up of the Wall to form a`mould for the reception ol. pourings oi" concrete on top of portions oi the Wall formed by previous pourings within the iorm while it wasin a lower position. The nature of the present improvements will be most quickly ascertained by reference innnediately to the illustrative construction shown. In the illustration, the reference character l() designates the outer plates or form sheathing which form the mould walls foi-the outer sides of the Wall under construction. These outer mould plates extend for a desired distance in the longitudinal direction of the wall under construction and are carried in a suitable elevating frame ll. In this trame are threaded the jack-screws 12 Which have ro tatable bearing1 on clamps 14 which are connected to the rods 1'5. The reference char acter fw designates the wall under construe tion, which, it will be observed, is of the hollow type having a cavity or space between the op osite parallel lwall portions. It will be un 'erstood that there a series of the frames l1 disposed at intervals longitudinally of the forni and connected by the stringers 10a Which carry the form "plates l0. At intervals along the course oi' the wall are disposed the vertical bars .l5 which are to be embodiedin the wall as reinforcing elements. These bars l5 are also utilized as purchase members in the operation olf elevating the form. The clamps ll are clamped into fixed engagement with the rods, and the screws are then turned, with the result that the frame is gradually elevated on their threads. The mould for the inner surfaces of the hollow Wall is provided by the inner mould. plates 16. These inner mould plates are constructed in sections, with the sections in alignment and slightly s accd apart at their ends, as illustrated in ig.` 2. These sections are carried on the frame 11, being affixed thereto by means of the rods 17. Consequently, the elevation of the frame raises the inner mould plate coincidentally Withthe elevation of the outer mould plates l0. As is well understood by one familial' with the operation of slip forms, the space interven ing between the outer' wall plates and the facing inner wall plates forms the mould cavity into which the concrete is poured for the building up of the wall. After a certain depth of concrete has been poured in these mould cavities, it is allowed to set to a proper hardness and stability, and then the form is elevated in the manner above described so as to extend the mould cavity upwardly for the reception of a new pourinfr. Y
zne of the reasons for the construction of the inner mould in sections is to accommodate transverse tie rods 18, which it is desirable frequently to place in the structure at intervals for the purpose of tying the opposite portions of the wall together across the intervening space. For the purpose of closing the space between the ends of adjacent mould sections, to prevent the fluid concrete froinvrunning out through that gap, we provide a shiftable shield member 19. AThis may be constructed conveniently of metal, with a web portion 19a of a width corresponding with that of the inner form see tion 16 and parallel flanges 19b at the opposite margins of the web, said flanges being of sufficient width to overlap the outer surfaces ofthe adjacent form sections across the space intervening` between said sections. Thefianges 19D extend for some distance below the lower margin of the web 19, and are provided with downwardly opening slots 19c at their lower ends. At their upper ends they are provided with inwardly deflected portions or shoulders 191 of suliicient length to extend across the top portions of the inner form plates. Adjacent the upper portion, the web 19a is provided with the apertures 19e to afford hand hold portions whereby the shield or cradle device may be grasped.
For an understanding of the operation of the apparatus, let it be assumed that a portion ofthe wall has been poured and set, the form sections 16 and the shield member 19 being in position to form the inner mould surfaces for the opposite wall portions. It being now desirable to elevate the form to receive a new pouring of concrete asv a further increment of the wall construction, the screws are turned down, thereby elevating the outer form plates as well as the inner form sections 16. As the latter are elevated, they engage the llangesor shoulders 19d of the shield member and carry the shield member on upwardly with them. When the form has been elevated to the desired extent, if it is desirable at this point to. insert some of the tie rods, the shield member is furt-her drawn upwardly, by hand, to a suflicient extent to permit the insertion of the tie rod between the ends of form sections 16, under the flanges 19h, and permit the proper positioning of the tie rod with its ends resting on top of the concrete in the opposite wall sections. rlhe shield member is now replaced and pushed downwardly so that the slots 19c embrace the tie rod and the lower ends of the flanges 19" extend down for a limited distance between the mould surfaces of the forni sections and the inner surfaces of the concrete wall portions. Thus the tic rod is held accurately in position for the next pouring ol' concrete, and the space between the adjacent form sections is effectively closed on both sides by the shield member, to prevent the fluid concrete from running out of the mould cavity. The next pouring of concrete is then made, and allowed to set, whereupon the elevating operation may be repeated, as above described. lt will be understood, of course, that the relative height of the shield member and the form sections need not be in the particular proportion shown in the drawing.
One of the pronounced :ulvantagcs of this apparatus lies in the fact that it eliminates the necessity for any temporary or individual supporting arrangement for maintaining the tie rods in position independently of the form. Consequently they may be inserted as desired during the building up of the wall, and they are held definitely in posit-ion so that they will not be displaced by the pouring or `aking of the concrete as it is distributed.
What we claim is:
1. In a slip form for concrete wall constructiointhe combination of form sections arranged end to end in spaced relation, means for elevating the sections, and a shield member overlapping the mold surfaces of adjacent sections to close the space between them, said shield member being engageable with said sections for elevating movement therewith. i
2. In slip forms for concrete wall construction, in combination, form sections arranged end to end in spaced relation and having mold surfaces at opposite sides, a shield member having portions overlapping said mold surfaces to close the space between the sections, and means for elevating the mold sections.
8.
