ADJUSTABLE HAT-BLOCK.
- Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application filed March 23, 1914. Serial No. 826,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR F. SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Hat-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to devices used in manufacturing hats and more particularly to hat blocks or forms.
The objects of the invention are set forth hereinafter and in part will be obvious and they are attained and realized through the combinations and instrumentalities set forth in the accompanying claims.
The invention consists in the novel articles, parts, structures, combination and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention and together with the description serve to illustrate the principles thereof.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed according to the principles of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a central section on line AB of Fig.2.
Referring by way of example to the drawings, a hat body 1 comprises a plurality of separable members which together constitute the form upon which the hat is made. Said members are relatively movable with respect to each other, being separable from and approachable to each other, and by their relative movement and varying degrees or amounts of separation or nearness, and the consequent change or adjustment in size, constituting a hat block or form upon, which hats of the different sizes can be made. Thus one of my hat blocks takes the place of a complete set of ordinary blocks, which set would comprise a separate hat block for each size of hat. As embodied, said hat block 1 comprises two such separable and relatively movable members 2 and 3. Said members 2 and 3, in the embodied form, are divided transversely or midway through the block, and each of said members comprises a portion of the hat body part a and also a portion of the brlm forming part 5.
In practically applying the device, a suitable support is provided for the relatively referred to movable hat body parts, together with means for indicating the relative position of such parts for hats of each given size. There are also provided means for holding the relatively movable or adjustable hat body parts in the position for any particular or desired size of hat. When the members 2 and 3 are properly positioned for a desired size of hat, and the holding means are utilized to hold them in such position, any desired number of hats of such size can be made. The device may then be very easily and quickly set for another desired size of hat through the agency of the indicating means. Said hat body members may be held in such position until the desired number of hats of this particular size is made and so with all the different sizes of hats.
The support or bed 6 in the embodied form extends beneath and also to one side from the hat block proper, and is channeled longitudinally and centrally beneath the hat block and out to the edge of such sidewise extension as indicated at 7. In said channel 7 lies a bar 8, longitudinally reciprccable in the channel 7 and having its end projecting beyond the end of the bed 6, said projecting part serving as a handle. The hat body member 2 is fixed to the bed 6, and the body member 3 is fixed to the slidable bar 8. Thus, when the bar 8 is grasped by its handle and moved the member 3 is moved toward or away from the member 2 to change the size of the block for different sizes of hats, as previously ex-' plained.
In the embodied indicating means, a plate 9 is fixed to bed 6, and the plate 9 extends over the channel 7 and the bar 8. The plate 9 has at proper locations thereon and extending lengthwise of the bar 8 therebeneath marks and figures corresponding to the different sizes of hats. In the plate 9 at said marks are a corresponding series of perforations 10 extending therethrough. In the bar 8 is a hole 15 adapted to pass into alinement or registry successively with the holes 10 in the plate 9 as the bar 8 is slid in or out. A pin 11 is set in the hole corresponding to the size of hat desired and as the hole 10 comes into alinement therewith, the pin 11 drops into the hole 10, thus holding the hat block at the desired size until a new size is required. On the brim forming part one or more measure or size'indications 13 may be made of such form or kind as may be desired.
14: is a guide projection extending from part 2 into a recess in part 3.
By my invention in a single device, each Workman has a block adapted to make every size hat, thus obviatingthe cost and room and storage of a Whole set of the usual hat blocks and avoiding as Well the" trouble of handling a large number of such old hat blocks and the trouble of changing from one to the other. Other objects and advantages Will be obvious or Will be ascertained from practice.
Theinvention is not limited to the precise form shown and described, but variations therefrom may be made, Within the scope of the accompanying claims, ithout departing from the principles of the invention and ithout sacrificing its chief advantages.
What Iclaim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows 1. A hat blocking device including in com binat'i'on a hat block comprisinga plurality of relatively movable hat forming members, a supporting base upon Which said hat forming members are mounted, said base also extending out from said hat block, a bar slidably mounted upon and slidable along said extension of said hat block, said bar being connected toone of said hat forming members of said hat block.
2. A hat blocking device including in combination a hat block comprising a plurality of relatively movable hat forming members, a supporting base to which one of said hat forming members is fixed and upon Which base another of said hat forming members is slidable, said base extending out from said hat block, a bar slidably mounted in said base and attached to one of said hat forming',members.
3. -A hat blocking device including in combination a hat block comprising a plurality of relatively movable hat forming members, a supporting base to which one of sai'd hat forming members is fixed, said base extending out from'said hat block, a bar slidably mounted in saidbase and attached to one of said hat forming members and size indicatingmeans ooiiperating With said bar.
i. A hat blocking device including in combination a hat block comprising a plurality of hat forming members including a freely moving member, a base to Which one of said hat forming members is fixed, said base extending out from said hat block, a member slidably guided along said base and fixed to said freely moving hat forming member, and means for holding saidslida bl'e member and said freely moving hat member in position for particular size of hat.
5'. A hatblocking devicein'cluding in combination hat block comprising a plurality of hat formingmembersincluding a freely moving member, a base to Which one of said hat forming members-is fixed, said base extending out from said hat block, a member slidably guided along said base and fixed to said freely moving hat" forming member, and means for holdingsaid slidable member and said freely moving hat member in position for a particular size of bat and size indicating means coipera'ting with said holding means.
6. A hat blocking device including in com bination a portable hat block comprising a plurality of bat forming members, including a movable member for varying the size of the hats to be m'ad'e,-a base for saidhat block and extending outwardly therefrom, said base being adapted'to rest directly on a table or like support, and means for varying the distance between said hat forming members, means for hold-ing saidmembers in the various desired positions for making hats of various sizes,-said'distan'ce varying means and said'hol'ding'means being carried upon the upper part of said base.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specificatiomin the'presence of I twosubseribi ng- Witnesses. v I
