MAX GOLDBERG, or new YORK, n. Y.
GARMENT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6, 1917.
Application filed September 10, 1915. Serial No. 49,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Markers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment markers and consists of a gage adapted to be used in measuring and marking a skirt or similar garment to insure uniformity of length and it consists of a slide adapted to be fitted to the stem or upright of a dress form or adapted to be supported within the garment and to present an adjustable edge along the lower lines of the garment on which the chalk marks may be made preparatory to trimming the surplus from the skirt. These and other objects and details of the invention will be more fully explained in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the device secured to the stem of a dress form.
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3, is a View showing how the marker is used.
In this class of devices it has heretofore been the custom to set up a device holding a piece of chalk at a point outside of the skirt and to move the device around the garment marking it on the outside at a point identical with the height of the chalk from the floor.
This method is unsatisfactory, mainly because there is no backing for the chalk and in the effort to make a mark a straight line is diificult.
The present invention is adapted to be mounted at a central point within the skirt, preferably on the stem of the form, and consists of the clamps 5 having a cooperating housing 6 and operated by the thumb screw '7 which may be loosened to move the clamp at the desired point on the stem 8 of the dress form. The clamp comprises the two angular members 5 and 6 which are adapted to engage a square or round stem of the usual size and the screw 7 plays through a plate 9 which may be removed to fit the clamp about the stem.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for The housing 6 is secured to a bar 10 carrying at its outer end a strap 11 through which passes a slide 12 having at its inner end the strap 13 which embraces the bar 10 and carries a set screw 14 adapted to operate against the bar and lock the slide 12 to it.
At the outer end of the slide 12 is a metal plate 15 curved on its outer face and adapted to act as a backing for the chalk as the lower line of the skirt is marked.
As will be seen in Fig. 3, after the skirt is placed on the form its length is determined and the marker is adjusted on the stem 8. With one hand the operator may hold the skirt against the plate 15 while with the other hand he uses the chalk to make the mark, the plate acting as a backing and limiting'the mark to a uniform and straight line. The device being firmly held in place, a clear and distinct line may be traced around the skirt at the proper height and the device may be quickly adjusted for difierent elevations as required.
It is obvious that the parts may be otherwise arranged and modified, or the clamp may be of any type of clamp without de parting from the essential features above described or from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a garment marker, the combination with a rigid upright supporting a garment, of a bar adapted to be secured to the upright at any desired height, an adjustable extension to the arm, and a segmental backing piece carried at the outer end of the extension and adapted to reside within the garment.
2. In a garment marker, the combination with an upright adapted to support a garment, of a clamp adjustable on the upright, a bar secured to the clamp, an extension slidable on the bar, means for locking the extension at a desired point, and a backing segment at the end of the extension and adapted to be located within the garment on the upright.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 23rd day of August A. D. 1915.
MAX GOLDBERG.
