Description
Oct. 4, 1932. P L, @ELLA LSSQQ@ ADJUSTABLE BUST FORM Filed sept. 29. 1930 ATTCRNEY Patented Oct. 4, 1932 LUIGI CELLA, F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY ADJUSTABLE BUST FORM lApplication.filed September'i29, '1930. Serial No. 484,971.
This invention relates to forms as used by tailors, dressmakers, etc., etc.,ron which to lit articles of wearing apparel, and more particularly to forms for the bust or'nppe'ripor-v tion of the body. n .A K p Such bust forms are made in different sizes relative to certain measurements of the body, but fail to take into consideration many of the peculiarities of the individual being tted, as for instance, diierence inV height of the shoulders, curvature of the upper part of the spine, stooped position, and the like, all of which exist in a more or less pronounced degree in the majority of persons.
t is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a bust formv adjustable to the idiosyncrasies of the individual to be Y itted, so that a garment shaped to the form will certainly lit the person to whom the form was adapted.
A further feature is in the provision of easily operated means for clamping the Inovable elements of the bust form in their adjusted positions. Y
" Another purpose is to produce an articulated bust form having means by which its sections may be reset to such inclinations from normal as may be necessary.
These advantageous objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential component of this disclosure, and in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of the invention shown from side to side, with the mechanism therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the bust forni.
4U Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the shoulder clamp device, taken on a line to one side of the line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
l Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the lower portion of the bust form, consisting of a hollow tube of ovoidal cross section, having fixed in its interior, near the upper edge, a rigid plate 11, provided with a central opening 12.
Secured on the plate, to cover the opening v 12, is a block 14 having a pendant stem 15 in which is set a rigid support bar 16 extending downwardly to a pedestal on the floor, as will be understood. 4
Formed in thefupper'surface of the block is a semi-spherical seat 17 suited to receive a globular poll 18 to rotate therein, the poll being held in adjustment by a clamp 1 9 hinged by a pin 20` passing through the clamp ex? 50 tension 21 and lugs 22 formed on the block.
An opposite extension 23 is engaged by a screw 24 having a shoulder 2 5 abutting the underside of the block 14 and provided with an extending stein 26 passing freely through 65 the plate 11 and lock y14 and provided with an operating knob 27. l v u,
The poll 18 is further provided with' extending pins 18 loosely receivable in guiding slots 14 to prevent radial movement of the main portion 32 with respect to the lower portion 10. i The poll 18 is connected by Va' stem 28 with a" dise 29 and is adapted to pass through Va Y lateral opening 30 in the clamp, which is shaped to permit of a limitedangular movement of the stem 28.
The disc 29'is lixedy in the vunder surface of a plate 31 firmly engaged, near the Ylower end of tliebody or main portion 32l or'l the bust fori-n, shaped' coincidently with thelower portion 10 and spaced th'ereabove, as seen in Figs. land 2, to permit relative tilting on the poll 18. Fixed on theV front and on one side of the' 85 lower section 11 are strips 33 graduated at their upper extending ends to producescales 34 which pass over `plates 35 secured thereabove on the body portion 32, the/scales be,-r ing read in connection with horizontal barsv4 36 iixed on theplates overthe scales, las best seen in'Fig. 2. A n vrThe upper, expanded end'of the body'sec? tion 32 has at the shoulder portions, convex' coverplates 37 provided at 'their upper peripheral edges with scale graduati'ons 38 readable in connection with arrow marks 39 onthe shoulder section 40 of the bust form. l
Carried bythe body portion 32 are brackets ioo 4l oppositely disposed and having inreaching elements to which are fixed the ends of a connecting tube 42 arranged axially of the shoulders and enclos-ing a smaller tube 43 having fixed in its ends inreaching plugs 44 rigidly carried by another pair of brackets 45 secured to the upper section 40.
A cylindrical clamp 46 surrounds the outer tube 42, which may be split as at 47, the clamp having extending lugs 48 to receive a shouldered clamp screwr 49 having a stem 50 terminating in a knob 51 accessible through the open throat element 52 of the upper section. Y
This arrangement permits of an independent tilting movement of the upper portion whereby the bust form may be made to assume stooped or erect positions, and, due to to the scale 38-39, this position may be re- .y peated at any subsequent time with entire accuracy.
The exterior of the bust form may be Vencased in any'suitable fabric, so that no gaps` appear at the ends of the several sections and it is apparent that, after adjustments have been made, the elements may be securely clamped ina convenient manner.
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiment of the invention, itwill be apparent that minorchanges may be made in the construction, without the exercise of invention or conflicting with the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A bust form having a body and a shoulder section, a tube fixed at its ends in said body section in register with the shoulders,
a second tube carried at its ends by said shoulder section to extend through the'first tube, said tubes constituting a hinge on which the shoulder element may tilt, and means for clampingl the tubes firmly' together when the sections are in adjustment.
2. A bust form comprising a hollow body having articulated sections including a base section, a body section and a shoulder section, a connection between the base and body sections whereby the body may be universally inclined with respect to the base to a limited degree, meansfor clamping said sections in adjusted position, a tube fixed at itsl ends in said body section in register with the shoulders, a second tube'carried at its ends by said shoulder :section to extend through the first tube, said tubes constituting a hingeon which the ,shoulder element may tilt, and means for clamping the tubes firmly together when the' sections are in adjustment.
3. A bust form having a body and a shoulder section, a tube fixedat its ends in said body section in register with the shoulders, a second tube carried at its ends by` said base section, a block fixed to said plate, said blocka globular poll affixed to said body section and receivable in the block seat having a semi-spherical seat, a clamp hinged to said block, pins extending from sai-d poll, guiding slotsin said seat adapted to loosely receive said pins to preserve relative radial alinement between the body and base sections, and means for varying the friction between the poll and its seat.
