Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRIOK F. PINNOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brodhead, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for Swinging and Sliding Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates broadly to the class of looks or latches and more particularly to the latter. I
The object of the invention is to improve upon the construction of devices of this character to such an extent as to provide a simple and novel form of yoke for guiding a pivoted latch bar as to allow it to coact effectively with the yoke.
With this and minor objects in view, the invention resides in the specific construction and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a sliding door and its frame, showing the application of my invention thereto, the door being slightly open; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the door closed and locked in closed position; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken along the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation partly in section, showing the form of keeper employed and illustrating the manner in which the active end of the latch bar coacts with said keeper; Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section taken along the plane of the line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line .66 of Fig.
3; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the pivoted latch bar and the parts carried thereby; Fig. 8 is a similar view of the yoke em ployed in connection with the latch bar; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the form of keeper employed. for securing the door in closed position; Fig. 10 is a face view of a door frame illustratingan edge view of a door hinged therein and showing the manner in which the device may be employed for locking the door in open position; and Fig. 11 is a horizontal section taken on the line 1111 of Fig. 10.
In the embodiment illustrated, in the drawings, I have; shown my inventionas in-' cluding a pivoted latch bar 1, guide yoke 2 therefor, a keeper 3 for receiving the active end of the bar, and numerous details of con struction to be herein described. The latch bar 1 is in the form of a flat rectilinear bar having one of its ends provided with a transverse pivot opening 4 while its opposite end portion is notched upon its upper and lower edges as indicated at 5, the free end of said bar, adjacent said notches, being beveled on its upper and lower edges as indicated at 6 whereby a pair of noses 7 are formed upon the upper'and lower edges of said bar. The rear surface of the bar 1 is preferably rounded as most clealy seen in Fig. 5, this provision being madeat the end portion of the bar carrying the noses 7 and being designed for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The intermediate portion of the bar 1 is here shown as being enlarged at 8 and provided with an upright pin 9 rising from said enlarged portion, with a depending pin 10 depending from said portion and with a comparatively long pin or finger 11 projecting inwardly from said portion. Between the enlargement 8 and the notches 5, the outer side of the bar 1 is provided with a laterally extending lug 12 through which an opening 13 is formed for the reception of a pad lock in a manner to appear while a rectangular head 14 is formed on the free outer end of said lug, the upper and lower ends of said head 14 rising and depending respectively from their juncture with said lug to form upper and lower noses 15.
In applying the device to either a swinging or sliding door, a suitable pivot bolt or screw 16 is inserted through the opening 4 and into the sliding door D or hinged door D as the case may be, a suitable slot S being formed through the body of the door for the reception of the pin or fin ger 11 whereby the latch may be operated from the inside of the door. When in this position, the notches 5 and noses 7 project beyond the free edge of the door as clearly set forth in the drawings and the upper and lower pins 9 and 10 are received respectively by a groove 17 and a notch 18 which are respectively formed in an upper elliptical attaching plate 19 and in a lower substantially rectangular attaching plate 20, the outer sides of these plates 19 and 20 being integrally united with an upright body portion i per .edge'of the plate 20.

a yoke member for attachment to a door, said member comprising an upright body portion, an attaching plate formed on the rear side of one end thereof, said plate being provided in its rear face, with an upright groove terminating av distance from its outer edge and opening through its inner edge, a second attaching plate formed on the rear side of said body portion at its opposite end, said plates being spaced one from the other and the second mentioned plate being formed with a notch in its inner edge and alined with said groove, a latch bar adapted to be pivoted at one end to a door, the intermediate portion of said bar being slidably mounted between said plates and contacting with said body portion, a stud on the one edge of said bar and projecting into said notch, a stud on the other edge of said bar and alined with said groove, and a coil Copies of this patent may be obtained for spring encircling said last mentioned stud and located in said groove.
2. A device of the character described including an elongated rectilinear latch bolt having a transverse opening in one end for the reception of a pivot pin, its opposite end portion being shaped to engage a keeper, pins formed on the upper and lower edges of the bar at its intermediate portion, a yoke receiving said intermediate portion and having grooves receiving said pins therein, and a coil spring encircling one of said pins and located in one of said grooves.
