BUNDLE-WRAPPER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATE BTUDOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bundle-Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bundle wrappers and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is so constructed that when the tying string is pulled upon the blank will he completely folded.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a package wrapper which may be utilized for shipping merchandise and sinnlar material through parcel post or which may be utilized as a candy or lunch wrapper and conveniently folded or unfolded by manipulation of the supporting or tying cord or ribbon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrapper of this character which may be utilized as a lunch or candy wraper with means to support the same around a childs neck and which is so constructed that it may be opened without moving the same, so that access may be had to the interior of the wrapper.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this application and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the outside of a blank. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inside of the blank. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device folded and shown in a position to be used as a childs lunch or candy wrapper. Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing the device arranged for parcel post or similar shipment. Fig. 5 is a perspective view looking from the rear of the wraper. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the front of the wrapper showing in perspective a modified form of catch.
In the specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein the body of the device is constructed of a single blank having front and rear portions 1 and 2 connected together by a bottom piece 3. The front and back portions are provided with side flaps at and 5, while the front portion is provided with a top flap 6 and the rear portion with a top flap 7. The flaps have tongues 8 foldable at their upper ends and adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

when folded in the position shown in Figs.
i and 5. The top flap 7 has its corners folded over, as shown at 9, and passing through the folded corners from the outside to the inside is a ribbon, tape or other flexible element 1.0 which passes through apertures 11 in the rear piece 2 and across the back and flapsel and is connected to the latter flaps by passing through apertures 12 arranged therein. The bottom piece is also provided with side fiaps 13, as shown, which fold inwardly and lie upon the inside of the flaps 5 when the wrapper is folded.
By reference ,to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be noted that the ends of the tape or cord 10 are knotted or otherwise secured upon the inner faces of the side flaps 4: near the outer lower corners thereof. By reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be noted that theopposite strands of the tape are directed at an inward angle from the apertures 12 to the apertures 11 and that the said apertures 11 are arranged adjacent the outer corners of the rear portion 12 of the vshank. Thus it will be noted that the said loop when the blank is in the position angularly disposed in Figs. 1 or 2, the strands will first fold the front 1 'upon the bottom 3 at the same time drawing the side 'flaps 1 inwardly toward the front 1, and
the said strands passing over the side flaps will also force them inwardly at a right angle to the bottom 3, and likewise the side flaps 5 will be folded at a right angle to the rear 2 and as a consequence between the end flaps 13 and the side flaps 4:. This operation brings the device to the position illustrated in Fig. 8, except that the top flap 6 and the tongues 8 are not folded inwardly as is illustrated tongues are positioned to be arranged between the side fiaps 4 and 5, so that in reality the top flap 6 forms the top proper for the box and the same may be folded outwardly upon its fold line on the front 1. When the top flap 6 is folded to the posicorners of the said side in the said Fig. 3, but the tion illustrated in Fig. 3, the corners 4 will necessarily have their lower edges contact with the upper face adjacent the free edge of the top flap 6 and these corners form a latch for the said top flap 6. With such an arrangement the loop of the fiexible element may serve as a means for suspending the carton from the clothes of the owner and the top flap 6 may be swung to an open or closedposition at will so that access may be had to the contents of the carton or wrapper. When it is desired to secure the flap 7 in closed position over the flap 6, the looped portion of the flexible member may be brought. around the box as illustrated in Fig. 5 and may be connected by a spring heart-shaped or triangular member 14, as shown in Fig. 3, or the outer edge of the flap 7 Y may be provided with slits which form a tongue to receive the end of the loop, as shown in Fig. 6. Still again, and as illustrated in Fig. 3, the flap 7 may be provided with a flexible element which may engage with the spring member 14 in which instance the looped portion of the flexible member 10 serves as a handle for the device v When the wrapper is folded the fiaps13 are folded inwardly. The flaps 5 are then folded at right angles to the part 2 over the" flaps 18, the part 2 being turned at right angles to the bottom 3. The part 1 is folded atright angles to the part 3 and the part 4 folded at right angles to the part 1 overthepart 5. The tongues 8 are then turned inwardly and the top flap folded over them, The flexible element is then drawn ,taut which holds the wrapper in folded position and forms an extended loop which may be used to hang the wrapper upon, as vwill be readily understood, the flexible element being adaptedto support the wrapper around a childs neck, upon a Christmas tree or to serve as a handle for carrying the wrapper.
When the device isfused. for shipping packages the looped end of the flexible element is carried around the wrapper and engaged with a heart or triangular-shaped member 14: pivoted to the front 1 or it may be engaged beneath the tongue, as shown in the modification shown in Fig. 6.
If desired, suitable eyelets orhollow rivet members may be placed in the apertures so as to reinforce the material of which the wrapper is made.
What is claimed is A package wrapper formed from a box blank which includes a front and a rear of similar proportions, and a bottom connecting the front and rear, side flaps upon the front, rear and bottom, a top flap for the front, a top flap for the rear, said top flap being of a width equaling that of the rear and having foldable corners, a flexible element or cord connected through the side flaps of the front arranged angularly over the side flaps of the bottom and rear and passing through openings in the rear portions adjacent the foldable corners of its top flap, the said flexible element being ex tended angularly to the edges of the blank providedby the ends of the side flap of the rear portion and the outer edges of the foldable corners, over the foldable corners and through orifices in the same and thence through orifices in the top flap adjacent the corners and terminating in a loop whereby, when a pull is exerted upon the said loop, the front and rear portions will be folded at right angles to the bottom, said side flaps will be folded at right angles to the respective portions to which they are at tached, and the corners folded against the top flap over the rear portionto provide retaining members for the top flap of the front portion when the said top flap of the front portion is folded over the top flap of the rear portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
