WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
a To all whom it may concern head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lever device to shift the wrench head of such construction that a single pawl may be used in connection with both right and left-hand ratchet teeth, preferably carried by separate detachable heads.
A further object of the invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction of a device of this kind whereby the same may prove satisfactory and efficient in use and be manufacturable at a moderate or slight cost.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is described hereinafter in connection with drawings accompanying this applica tion illustrating the improvements.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench; Fig. 2 is a plan or top view thereof; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan or bottom view of the wrench head; Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the pawl carrying member or bracket; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the pawl.
Throughout the drawing like reference characters designate like or similar parts.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 designates a wrench head which is provided with a nut or object engaging opening 2 of any suitable shape. The top wall of the wrench head is closed for the most part, and on the exterior thereof are provided a continuous row of ratchet teeth designated 3. The top wall of the wrench head is provided with a longitudinal opening or aperture 4 through which is adapted to pass a bolt or pivot member 5 whose head 6 re- .mains interior of the opening 2.
To the bolt 5 is pivoted a shifting lever device generally designated 7 which may comprise the handle device, the handle proper of which is designated 8. Preferably one or more nut receiving openings 9 are formed in the handle 8. Beyond the upper face of the lever 7 the bolt 5 is adapted to receive one or more nutslO.
As best seen in Figs. 2 and 5, the lever 7 is provided with a plurality of arcuate transverse slots 11. A pawl 12 is adapted to be supported upon the lever 7 so as to engage either of the slots 11 desired according to whether or not the teeth 3 are righthand teeth or left-hand teeth. This pawl has an inclined wall 13 similar to the inclined walls of the teeth 3 so that the pawl may slip over said teeth in one direction and abut against the straight walls thereof when the lever is moved in the opposite direction. This pawl 13 is carried by a bracket or carrier member 1% being coupled thereto by means of a pivot pin 15. The bracket is preferably provided with spaced apart ears or lugs 16 in which the pin 15 is fastened and further provided with a plurality of spaced apart lugs 17 providing between them an elongated slot 18. Through the elongated slot 18 is adapted to pass the screw threaded shank of a set screw 19 having a head adapted to clamp against lugs 17, said shank adapted to screw into an opening 20 of lever 7 as best seen in Fig. 5.
In use any number of heads, preferably differing in the sizes of the openings 2 thereof are employed. Also the teeth of one or more of the heads may be right-hand teeth and of the others may be left-hand teeth. According to whether or not the teeth are right-hand or left-hand as set forth, the pawl 12 is first adjusted prior to coupling of the head to the lever. In shifting the pawl from one slot 11 to the other, the set screw 19 is unloosened the pawl removed from the adjacent opening 11 and'then turned, turning with it the bracket 14, and released so that it will fall into the slot 11. Thereafter the set screw 19 is tightened.
When the pawl is coupled as described and the head 1 applied to a bolt, the pawl will slip over the teeth when the handle is turned in one direction and will securely engage the teeth when it is turned in the opposite direction so that the lever and head will move as a unit to turn the nut or object engaged by the opening 2. Also the handle 8 alone may be used as a wrench itself, opening 9 serving to engage a nut.
It is to be noted that the parts are few and simple and can be readily detached from each other to occupy small space when not in use. Further it is to be noted that with a wrench constructed like the present one the same can operate in a very limited space. 7
As merely the preferred embodiment has been illustrated and designated herein, it should be stated that changes such as fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims are reserved.
having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a wrench, a head provided with teeth on an end wall thereof, a lever movable relatively to the head and over said teeth having a slot therein, a pawl engageable with said teeth movable through said slot in a plane at right angles to the teeth to disengage the same, a carrier member for said pawl, means to fasten said member to said lever permitting adjustment thereof bodily for reversal independently of the lever and head, and means to removably fastensaid head to said lever.
2. lln a wrench, a lever, a head provided with ratchet teeth, said lever pivoted to said head and turnable over said ratchet teeth therewith in one direction and independently thereof in the opposite direction, said lever provided with a slot extending completely through the same, a pawl fastened to said lever passing through said slot engaging said teeth, and means to pivot said pawl to said lever for movement in a plane at right angles to the path of movement of the lever.
3. In a wrench, a head provided with ratchet teeth, a lever movable relatively to said head provided with a plurality of slots, a single pawl to extend through either of said slots and engage said teeth, carrier means to which the pawl is pivoted, means to adjustably fasten said carrier means to said lever, and means to removably fasten said head to said lever.
a. In a wrench, a head provided with ratchet teeth, a lever movable relatively to said head having a plurality of slots extending completely therethro-ugh, a pawl engageable with said teeth through said slots, a carrier, a pivot member fastening said pawl 'to' said carrier for movement in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the lever, and means to adjustably fasten said carrier to said lever so that the carrier may be adjusted and fastened with said pawl extending into either of said slots, and means to removably fasten said head to said lever.
In a wrench, a head having ratchet teeth thereon, a lever movable over said ratchet teeth, a bolt passing through said head and said lever removably fastening said head to said lever, said lever provided with a plurality of slots extending completely th'erethrough, a carrier member, means to adjustably fasten said carrier member to said lever, a pawl, means pivot ing said pawl to said carrier member, said pawl adapted to extend into either of said openings to engage said ratchet teeth, said pawl movable on its pivot member in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
