To all whom it concern:
Be it knpwnthat I, FRANK A. GATEWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Sylvan Grove, in the county of Lincoln and:
or a nut which is more .or less inaccessible and operated from a remote point to readilyturn the bolt or nut home or withdraw the same. The invention also seeks to provide means whereby the wrench may be held I against operation after the nut or bolt has been loosened so that loss of the member operated upon will be prevented.
The invention is illustrated in the accomp gaged in the notches 9 and the lever then panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the improved wrench;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, showing a locking handle or lever applied thereto;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking handle.
In carrying out the invention, I employ side plates 1 which are secured together in spaced) relation by screws or bolts 2, as clearly shown. Between the plates, I provide a train of gears consisting of end gears 3 and 4 and an intermediate gear 5 meshing with both end gears whereby to transmit motion from one to the other. These gears are mounted upon axles or shafts journaled in the side plates 1 and the end pinions or gears have their shafts or axles extended beyond one side plate, as shown at 6 and 7 respectively. The extended portions are of angular cross section whereby they may receive a socket member, indicated in dotted lines at 8, or may have a crank or brace applied thereto so as to be rotated. It will be noted that the extensions 6 and 7 are disposedat opposite sides of the wrench. In the opposite edges of the side plates adjacent the-gearr3, I provide arcuate notches or recesses 9 which are disposed concentric to the gear and are adapted to receive the ins or studs 10 on the sides of a locking ever or handle 11. The studs are provided 7 as shown in Fig. 2.
Specification of letters te Patented J an. 13, 1920. Appl cation filed August 6, 1919. sem No. 315,722.
on footportion 12 which is disposed approximately at a right angle to. the main portion of the lever or handle and in the concave side of said foot portion I form a plurality of transverse teeth 13 which are adapted to engage the teeth of the gear 3,
In the use of the device the socketS is engaged over the extension 601' the extension 7 and then fitted to the bolt head or nut whichis :to be turned. A brace or other turning tool is applied to the other extension 6 or 7, as the case may be, and rotated thereby imparting motion to the .end gear 3 or 4 which will be transmitted through the gear 5 to the other end gear. If the nut or bolt should be corroded or jammed so that it will not turn easily, the lever or handle 11 is brought into use, the studs 10 being enturned about the pins or studs 10 until the teeth 13 engage the teeth of the adjacent gear and consequently hold the train of gearing against movement. The wrench then becomes practically a rigid wrench, the side plates 1 and the handle 11 acting as a single lever to apply turning force to the nut or bolt.
My wrench is especially applicable to withdrawing nuts from or applying them to bolts which are located in corners or angles and will be found highly efficient. It is composed of very few parts which are very simple in their construction and consequently are not liable to get out of order.
Having thus 3 described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A wrench comprising a pair of side plates handle having a foot portion adapted to fit between the side plates and constructed to engage and lock the adj acent gear, andstuds on the opposite sides of said foot portion of the locking handle to engage the notches in the edges of the side plates.
In testimon whereof I aflix m signajure.
