ALBERT J, SCI-IROETER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
EDGE BINDING 130R LINOLEUM AND THE LIKE.
Application filed June 26, 191a.
T all whom it may concern lie it known that I, ALBERT J. SOI-IROETER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Edge Binding for Linoleum and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to edge binding for linoleum or other floor covering, and has for its object the provision of an edge bind ing which will securely hold the floor covering in place and will protect the edge of the same, and at the same time will effectively exclude moisture and likewise admit of a truck being run over the edge binding without material shock or danger of injury thereto.
My invention may be briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be described in the specification and set forth in the appended claims.
ln the accompanying sheet of drawings wherein I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of linoleum or other floor covering equipped with my improved edge binding, portions of which are broken away; Fig. 2 is a sectional view substantially along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
in the drawings 10 is a portion of the floor on which is laid linoleum or other floor covering 11. My invention is of particular utility as an edge binding for linoleum, especially of the thicker kinds having a marginal edge of considerable height which is easily broken or kicked loose or loosened by trucks.
The edge binding which will extend entirely around the margin of the linoleum or floor covering 11 comprises a strip 12 of metal, such as brass, having a horizontal or flat marginal portion 12 which rests upon the floor 10, a second horizontal or flat marginal portion 12*, which overlaps and rests on the edge of the floor covering 11, and an intermediate inclined portion 12 which is inclined upwardly with a suitable gradual taper from the lower marginal portion 12" to the upper marginal portion 12 The marginal portions are secured to the floor and to the linoleum by tacks 13. The edge binding also includes a filler 14, con- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 19 15.. Seria1-1 To. 847,397.
sisting preferably of a triangular-shaped strip of wood which fills the space beneath the inclined portion 12 of the metal strip, and has its base or edge portion clamped securely against the edge of the floor covering 11, as shown particularly in Fig. 2. This filler 141 performs the dual functions of sustaining or supporting the portion 12 of the strip, and it also acts as an absorbent for moisture and prevents the latter getting under the edge of the floor covering 11. This is of considerable importance to linoleum which rots or rapidly deteriorates, as is well known, if moisture is permitted to get beneath the same. While I have mentioned wood as the material of which the filler is made, I do not wish to be confined to the same, as some other suitable material may be employed.
The upper edge 12 of the strip 12 is preferably beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, and the edge may be curved or bent downwardly slightly, so that when the strip is tacked in place said edge will bite into the marginal portion of the linoleum. This assists in preventing moisture passing beneath the metal strip.
It will be seen that while I propose to extend the edge binding entirely around the floor covering, it is of special utility between. doorways or at other points traversed by persons, or trucks, for the edge of the floor covering is exceedingly well protected against breakage or wear by shoes or truck wheels, the inclined part of the metal strip permitting the truck wheels to run either up or down the edge binding without shock or injury to the same, the filler amply supporting the inclined part of the strip, and in addition serving to absorb moisture and to prevent the latter from getting under the floor covering. The edge binding therefore increases the life of the floor covering by protecting it at points where without the edge binding it would be worn or broken, and at the same time it prevents deterioration by excluding moisture beneath the floor covering.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An edge binding for linoleum or other floor covering, comprising a metal strip having marginal portions engaging the floor and floor covering respectively, an intermediate inclined part extending from the lower marginal portion to the upper marginal portion, and a filler beneath the inclined portion.
2. An edge binding for linoleum or other floor covering, comprising a metal strip having marginal portions engaging the floor and linoleum respectively and secured thereto, an inclined portion extending upwardly from the lower to the upper marginal portion, and a filler of absorbent material beneath said inclined portion of the strip, said 10 filler having its edge engaging the edge of the floor covering.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses ALBERT J. SGHROETER. Witnesses:
A. F. KWIS, E. B. GILOHRIsT.
