To all whom t may concern.; .I f Be it known that I, EDMUND F. HosIIIN, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Chicago, in the countyv of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Billiard Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in billiard tab-les and moreespeoially tothe method of fasteningand supporting the rcushion andrail at the' edge ofy a -billiard or pool table. It is.l to be understood that theV term billiard table as here used, therefore, includes pool tables,pooket billiard tables, .carom tables and all similar tables having a cushion thereonf s Y Ashere shown, the invention is embodied in a table having a bed made of molded inaterial ksuch as Portlandcement impregnated` with` any suitable material such assulphur.

It tobe understood, however, that the in@ vention mayfbe used onl any kind of table having anywkindgofv` bedsuch asa bed of natural slate as is commonly used on billiard tables. v Y.

By the use of-.niy invention it is possible to make a cushion rail supporting structure that is strong and durable' and cheap and easy to manufacture `By the use of my invention, also,.the cushion rail and rail of the table .are held more firmly, strongly and accuratelyiin place.` By the use of my'inyventigon, also, it is possible to remove quickly andeasily thel cushion on such a table anol replace the same, forrepair -or'shipping purposes or for substituting different kinds vlof cushions or rails, y By the use of my invention, also, in mounting the cushion, the same is carried byla metalf'l'fi'ron strip whichin turn is mounted on the bed. `jBy means of this construction, in mounting the cushion, metal and slatelare fastened4 together andthis, it will be found, givesa morepermanent and yaccurate fit with less liability o f warping or bending.

yAs shown in t e drawings, 10 indicates the bed of a table 'here shown, for the purpose of illustration, as Ina-de out of some suitable molded material such as Portland cement impregnated with sulphur under heat and in a partial vacuum to give a suitable hard, smooth, solid bed resembling natural slate. This bed is covered with the ordinary billiard cloth 11 which has its edge tacked at 12 to the wooden stri-p 13 embedded in theouter edge of the bed. 14; indicates suitable levelling screws disclosed and 'claimed in a co-pending application and forming no part of the present invention.

15 indicates a T-iron having a horizontal vplate or base lavwith the centrally disposed vertical stiffening flange or rib 16. This T-iron is fastened around the edge of the bed by means of the screws -17 threaded into the` nuts 18 which preferably are embedded in the bed 10 as the same is formed. The T-iron is so placed that the vertical flange 16 issubstantially in registr with the outer surface 19 of the bed 10. W ienl inthis position, it will be seen, that substantially half of the bottom plate 15 projects out beyond the edge of the bed 10. This T-iron surrounds the whole table except where pockets aredesired. The construction of the pockets will be explainedmorefully hereinafter.

Lying on the inside of the vertical flange y16 and ontopof'the bottom plate 15a is a wooden Cushion strip 2O held in place 'by means of the screws 21 which are threaded into retaining nuts 22 suitably embedded in the lstrip 20. The inner edge of the strip 2O is beveledas shown and carries the rub- ,ber cushion strip 23. 24 indicates the cloth which covers the rubber strip (23'. i This cloth is fastened onto the strip 20 at itsedges in any desired manner, such as bythe use of the strips 25 and tacks 26.

27 indicates the rail of the table which it will be noted is supported by means of the screws 28 extending through the flange 16 of the T-iron. The corner between the flange 16 and the bottom plate 15a on the outside is filled by means of a strip 29 as shown, which is held in place by the screws 30 which extend through the bottom plate 15a. 31 indicates a blind rail, apron, or side board below the rail 27 extending downwardly some distance in order to conceal the edge of the bed 10 and improve the appearance of the side of the table. At suitable intervals, glued to the lower` edge of this board 13 on the inner side are provided a series of blocks 3Q, which add to the strength of the rail by spacing it away from the edge of the bed.

Pockets are provided by t-he use of pocket irons as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the former indicating a corner pocket and the latter a side pocket. These irons are indicated respectively by and 34. It will be seen that they are formed to the shape of the pocket desired and provided with projecting lugs 35 at their ends which overlap the bottom plate 15a outside of the vertical flange or rib 16 and are held in place by means of the bolts 36 and nuts S7. lfifhile I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope o-f'the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which itis my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a table of the character described; a T-iron fastened to the bed of the table at its edge with a horizontal base plate and an upwardly projecting flange; a cushion strip carried by said T-iron on the. inside of the vert-ical flange and on top of the base plate; and a. rail carried by said T-iron on the outside of the vertical flange.

2. In a table of. the character described; a T-iron mounted at the edge of the bed of said table with its base plate projecting out beyond the edge of said bed and having an upwardly project-ing flange; a cushion strip carried by said T-iron on the inside of said vertical flange and on top of said base plate; and a rail carried by said T-iron on the outside of said vertical flange.

3. In a table of the character described; a T-iron fastened at the edge of the table with a horizontal bottom plate and an upwardly projecting flange, said strip being interrupted at the location of pockets; a cushion strip carried by said T-iron and lying inside of the flange and on top of the.

base plate; and pockets irons at the location of pockets, each of said irons being shaped to conform to the shape of a pocket and provided with supporting lugs at its ends attached to the base plate of said T-iron.

4. In a table of the character described; a T-iron fastened at the edge of the table with a horizontal bot-tom plate and an upwardly projecting flange, said strip being interrupted at the location of pockets; a cushion strip carried by said T-iron and lying inside of the flange and on top of the base plate; and pocket irons at the location of pockets, each of said irons being shaped to conform to the shape of a pocket and provided with supporting lugs at its ends attached to the base plate of said T- iron on the outside of said flange.

5. In a table of the character described; a T-iron attached to the outer edge of the bed of the table and having a horizontal bottom plate with a vertical stift'ening flange; and a cushion strip carried by said T-iron lying on top of the base plate and inside of said vertical fla-nge, said cushion strip being attached tosaid vertical flange.

6. In a table of the character described;

a Tiron attached to the edge of the bedof said table and having a horizontal base plate and a vertical stiffening flange, said T-iron being attached by means of screws extending through the base plate and into the bed of the table; and a cushion strip lying on the base plate of said `T-iron and inside of the vertical flange thereof and attached thereto by screws extending through said-vertical flange and into said cushion strip.

7 In a table of the character described; a T-iron attached to the edge of t-he bed of said table and having a horizontal base plate and a vertical stiffening flange, said T-iron being attached by means of screws extending through the base plate and into the bed of the table; a cushion strip lying on the base plate of said T-iron and inside of the vertical flange thereof and attached thereto by screws extendino1 through said vertical flange and into saic cushion strip; and a rail carried by said T-iron on the out'- .side of said vertical flange.

8. In a table of the character described; a T-ir-on attached to the edge of the bed of said table and having a horizontal base plate and a vertical stiffening flange, said T-iron being attached by means of screws extending thr-oughthe base plate and into the bed of the table; a cushion strip lying on the base plate of said T-iron and inside of the vertical flange thereof and attached thereto by screws extendino through said vertical flange and into said cushion strip; and a rail carried by said T-iron on the outside of said vertical flange, and attached thereto by screws extending through said Vertical ange and into said rail.

9. In a table of the character described;

a Tiron mounted at the edge of the bed of 5 said table and having a horizontal base plate and a vertically projecting stifening ange, said base plate proj eating out beyond the edge of said bed of said table; and a cushion strip carried by said T-iron on the inside of said vertical flange. 10
