BENJAMIN CHARLES, UF AKRON, OHsI'O.
Letters Patent No. 112,781, dated March 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, BENJAMIN CHARLES, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvemeut in a Combined Pen-Holder, Stamp, and Pen- Case, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to an improvement iu penholders, constructed in such a manner as to utilize all theaspace which it contains, and to furnish to the inarket a compact and economical article, which, While it holds the pen in use, forms a convenient receptacle for pens, postage-stamps, Src.
Description of theADrawing.
Figure 1 isja longitudinal section ofthe device.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section on line :zz-x.
Figure 3 is a back elevation.
Figure/ isa horizontal section on line y-y, with Spring broken away.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of lower part.
A is the handle, constructed with the peculiarexterior form, of metal or other suitable material, with the levera suspended at the axle b, and having at one end the clamp c, curved to suit the foi-1n of the pen.
.lhis lever may be operated by the thumbor linger, and whenV pressed down forms, with the back of the handle and clamp c, a complete holder for the pen being used.
The lever a may be used on the opposite side of the handle, it' desired, by reversing the 4lever and its ful- Cl'lllll.
An opening or slot is formed in the back of the handle, to allow the lever to move freely.
The long arm ofthe level' is beveled at the end, so thatwhen the pen is clamped the slide' d, moving iu its slot, serves to hold the curved clamp ciu its proper `:position lwhile the pen is being used.
The advantage in this form of lever over other methods of securing pens in their holders is'on account of its allowing the dirty and worn-out pen to4 drop freely from the holder when released withou having to use and soil the ngers in the act.
The clamp c is provided with an elastic band,'j,A
which, at theback of the clamp, gives a soft and elastic bearing to the pen while it is being used.
This elastic band maybe of rubber or other soft and elastic material, and may .extend to the end of the holder, lto prevent the ink from nding its Way between the clamp and the back of the holder, and thereby to assistin .keeping the ink from the fingers while the pen islbeing'used.
C is the hollow space within the handle, which may be used as a receptacle for peus, 85e., and hasa bottom, g, to keep the articles in the hollow space from falling through, and it being attached at the point t by a rivet or solder, serves at the same time as a spring to throw up the lever and release the pen when the slide d is withdrawn. i
B is lthe cap or upper part of the handle, andmay be secured to the lower part by screw-threads or any other means in common use.
Slips of metal or springs, h, are secured to the inlthe cap or cover B, as and for the purpose set forth.
