Description

J. A. KING. BAIL EAR AND COVER AND SUPPLEMENTAL CASING FASTENING.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 12 Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
JAMES A. KING, OF BRAZIL, INDIANA.
BAIL-EAR AND COVER AND SUPPLEMENTAL-CASING FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 12, 1914. Serial No. 844,690.
To ail whom it'mayconcern Be it known that I, JAMES A. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brazil, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Bail-Ear and Cover'and Supplemental-Gas ing Fastening; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to buckets, pails and cans, and particularly to the kind that are provided with a supplemental casing or receptacle, and the aim of the invention is to provide an improved bail, ear and cover and supplemental casing fastener.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this nature, which not only affords attaching means for the bail, but also acts to fasten the cover and supplemental casing or receptacle in place.
Another object of the invention is to utilize the resiliency or spring of the bail, for throwing the fastener from engagement with either the cover or the supplemental casing, or from engagement with both simultaneously.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of What is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a sectional View through a bucket or can, showing the supplemental receptacle and cover locked. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail View of one side of the view in Fig. 1, more clearly showing the structure, and illustrating parts in section and parts in elevation, and showing the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing only the lid fastened to the main can or bucket, and illustrating the bail ear thrown outwardly in dotted lines, owing to the spring action of the bail. Fig. 1 is a detail view of the bail ear detached. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the member for actuating the bail ear against. the spring action of the bail.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the main receptacle or can, or bucket, in which a supplemental receptacle 2 telescopically engages, and 3 denotes the cover or lid, which may fit either the main receptacle or the supplemental receptacle. The cover or lid is provided with a projecting flange 4, while the supplemental receptacleis constructed with a peripheral or circumferential rib 5. Fastened to opposite sides of the main or dominant receptacle or bucket, are plates 6. These plates are riveted, soldered or otherwise secured to the main receptacle as shown at 7. The upper and lower portions of each plate 6 are provided with rolls or sleeves 8 and 9. The upper roll of each plate receives a pin 10. This pin 10 also extends through the sleeves or rolls 11 of the arms 12 of the'bail car 13 to which each hooked end 14: of the bail 15, is connected as shown at 16. The upper portion of each ear terminates in a lateral lug 17 to engage over the laterally extending flange 4 of the cover 3, that is, when the ear is thrown to a position as shown in Fig. 1, by means of the lateral portions 18 of the member 19, which is mounted in the rolls or sleeves 9. Each lat eral lug 17 acts to lock or clamp the cover in place. Riveted at 21 to each ear 13 is a plate 20 having an arm 22 extending downwardly, which is engaged by the lateral portions 18 of the member 19, when the lug 17 is overhanging the flange 4 of the cover. When each member 19 is disposed as shown in Fig. 1, the lateral portions 18 extend laterally outwardly and partially downwardly, so as to hold the lug 17 firmly over the flange 4 of the lid. The disposition of the portions 18 also prevents the downwardly extending arms 20 from collapsing against the sides of the can or bucket 1. Also riveted to each ear 13 by one of the rivets 21 is an angled plate 25, the portion 26 of which overlies and engages the peripheral or circumferential rib 5, to hold the supplemental receptacle in place. When the members 19 are thrown upwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the resiliency or spring action of the bail acts to throw the ears outwardly, thereby disengaging the portions 26 from said rib 5 and the lugs 17 from engagement with the flange 4 of the lid, thereby permitting the supplemental receptacle and the lid to be removed.
As shown in the drawings it will be seen that the supplemental receptacle may be fastened in place, without the lid thereon, and furthermore, the supplemental receptacle may be removed, and the lid held fas- Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
tened in position by the portions 26 of the angular plates upon the dominant receptacle or bucket.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A pail having a bail ear pivoted to each side and provided with laterally extending lugs to engage the circumferential rib of a supplemental receptacle of the pail and a flange of the cover of the supplemental receptacle, a spring bail connected to the ears acting to throw the ears laterally to disengage the lugs from the receptacle and the cover, and a pivoted angular member to throw the ears toward the receptacle and the cover to cause said lugs to engage therewith.
2. A pail having a bail ear pivoted to each side and provided with laterally extending lugs to engage the circumferential rib of a supplemental receptacle of the pail and a flange of the cover of the supplemental receptacle, a spring bail connected to the ears acting to throw the ears laterally to disengage the lugs from the receptacle and the cover, each ear having a downwardly extending arm, and a member pivoted to each side of the pail below the pivoted ear and provided with lateral portions designed to engage the arm to throw the ear toward the receptacle and the cover to cause said lugs to engage therewith.
3. In combination with a pail having ears pivoted to opposite sides thereof, said ears being offset from the pail, each ear having a lateral lug to overlie the cover of the pail to clamp the same in position and provided with a downwardly extending arm, a spring bail pivoted to said ears and acting to throw the ears laterally to disengage the lugs from the cover, plates secured to opposite sides of the pail and forming a part of the pivotal connection of said ears, said plates having rolls at their lower portions, members pivoted in said rolls and provided with lateral portions to engage said arms to tilt the ears toward the cover to cause said lugs to engage therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
