To all whom'vlt may concern Be it known that I, HARRY D. J orrnson, J r., citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Mechanism for Dump-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locking mechanism for dump-wagon WlIldlasses, and has for its particular object, to'

This device is adapted to be located in the foot-pit of dump-wagons, and comprises a supporting plate 5, a locking-pawl 6, a pawllever 7, and alock 8, so positioned to the usual chain Windlass, that the locking-pawl canbe thrown into engagement with the ratchet 9, to prevent its reverse rotation.
The windlass 10 extends from side to side of the wagon-body, and is supported in any well known manner to rotate and wind the usual chains which close the dumping doors of the wagon, and said Windlass is operate in the winding direction by the usual handlever 11, which is provided with the well known hand operated pawl 12.

The groove 18 in the pawl 6, inclines up- .wardly and forwardly at the front end thereof as indicated at 22, so that it can tilt on its pivot to ride overthe teeth of the ratchet 9, and is'also provided with extensions 23 which are adapted to engage the substantially surfaces 15 to prevent the overturning of the pawl. To look the pawl 6 in an operative position the lock 8 is provided, the same being pivoted at 25 to the supporting plate 5, and comprises a locking lug'26 which is adapted to engage the under-side of the arm 20, a forwardly extending arm 27 having a projection 28, and a top-lug 29. which is adapted to engage a stop 30, preferably formed on the -supporting plate 5. The lug 26 lies in alinement with the arm 20, and the arm 27 is ofiset therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. .4, so as not to engage the arm 20 when the lug 26. afi'ected, 'To release the pawl 6 from the ratchet, the lock 8 is first operated clockwise, which releases the arm 20, then a slight pressure on the end of said arm will withdraw the pawl 6 from engagement with the ratchet and the Windlass is then free to be dumped, It is obvious, that when the'windlass is to be re:
wound,'the lock ,8 is operated anti-clockwise lifting' .thearm 20 and sliding the pawl once more in position for engagement with the. ratchet, and itcannot be moved from this engaging position until {the lock.
