invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Wagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1. shows a vertical rear view of a dumping wagon equipped with my invention. The wagon shown is of a common type, built so as to discharge its load through the bottom of the wagon. The bottom being provided with suitable doors or closures. The connection between the doors and winding shaft is the same at both ends of the wagon. Fig. 2. is an enlarged view of the main parts of my improved operating mechanism. or Windlass. For the sake of clearness and to avoid a multiplicity of drawings showing the many ways that this mechanism may be applied to a dump wagon, as for example, when the winding-shaft is disposed transversely of the wagon instead of longitudinally as shown in Fig. 1, no part of the wagon other than the operating device is shown. The general arrangement of the lever, pawl and ratchet is similar to the present practice. My improvement being the addition of the friction brake or strap surrounding the ratchet wheel which I have shown to serve also as a detent in conjunction with the ratchet, and a pawl trip or means for disengaging the pawl from the ratchet. The friction brake is designed so as to be operated by the lever. Fig. 3. is a side elevation of Fig. 2, and is projected therefrom.
My invention relates to an improvement in dumping wagons which are constructed to dump their loads, through a bottom opening, at the will of the operator.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for attaching the operating device to the doors so that the attachments will not drag in a dumped load when the wagon is moved away.
' Another obj eet of my invention is to provide an operating ,device which will enable the operator to stop and hold the doors in any position during the opening movement.
My invention consists in the novel manner in which I hang the swinging edge of the doors or closures, for closing the discharging opening in the wagon, on a sliding or rolling support arranged to move across the doors when they are opening or closing, so as to keep the said support free and clear from the discharged load when the doors are open.
My invention also consists in the novel manner in which I apply a friction brake to the door operating mechanism, (usually consisting of a winding shaft rotated by a lever through a ratchet, pawl and detent), so that it can be applied by the operating lever as a brake, a detent in conjunction with a pawl and ratchet, and a pawl trip.
The advantages of my invention are numerous; by
the application of the sliding door supports to drop bottom dumping wagons, a new field is open to such wagons, namely in handling brick, broken stone and similar materials through which it would be impractical to drag the customary chain door supports. besides it would better the condition for handling sand and similar materials through which the present wagons drag their door supports. By the application of my controlling device for stopping and holding the doors in any partly open position, the dumping wagons are made more advantageous for filling work where a distributed load is cheaper to handle than one dumped in a single pile, which has to be distributed by shoveling and wheelbarrowing. My controlling or operating device will also dump the load in a single pile if the operator so desires.
In the drawings I have shown and indicated by numbers the various parts. as follows:
The doors or closures 1 are shown to conform with the general practice viz. hinged at the side of the wagon, the axes extending lengthwise of the wagon, and meeting and overlapping on the longitudinal center line of the wagon, when opening for discharging the load the doors 1 swing downwardly and outwardly away from the longitudinal center line of the wagon, until they hang vertically under the sides of the wagon, as shown in dotted lines on Fig. 1., leaving a clear opening in the bottom of the wagon through which the load drops. The sliding door supports 2 are shown as beams of round cross section, extending lengthwise of the wagon, under the doors, near the longitudinal center line of the wagon; they extend beyond the edges of the doors far enough to get a connection with the rods and chains leading to the winding shaft; the sliding door supports 2 have no fixed connection with the doors and slide or roll along the under surface of the doors, and when suitably guided as by the swinging guides 3, slide to the position on the doors, when the doors are open, as shown by dotted lines on Fig. 1. There are hangers 12 for supporting the sliding door supports 2, one hanger on each end of each support 2, flexibly attached thereto, the free ends of the hangers 12 are linked together in couples, those at the back of the wagon forming one couple and those at the front forming another couple,
the length of each couple is equal to the distance between the sliding door supports 2 when they are in their position on the open doors, each couple extending horizontally in one straight line between the ends of the sliding door supports 2 to which they are connected, as shown on the back of the wagon by dotted lines on Fig. 1, the same condition exists at the front of the wagon. The hangers 12 are provided with turn buckles 11 to enable the adjustment of the length of the hangers to suit the conditions. Winding chains 9 are attached to the links coupling the hangers 12, the chains 9 pass from their connection to the hangers 12 over sheaves 10 which are located so as to allow the chains 9 to hang vertically down from the center line of the wagon to the hanger connection, the other ends of the chains 9 pass across the wagon to the side where they are fastened to the winding shaft 5 at the front and back of the wagon. The winding shaft 5 extends along one side of the wagon from the chain connection at the back of the wagon to the drivers seat where the shaft rotating or operating device is located. The operation of these parts are as follows :Assume the doors closed and wagon loaded; then to dump the load, release the winding shaft 5 on which the chains 9 are wound, the load on the doors will cause them to bear down on the sliding door supports 2, which through their hangers 12 will unwind the chains 9 and the slid; ing door supports 2 will be free to rotate downwardly and outwardly around the center of the guides 3, the sliding door supports 2 sliding away from the free edges of the doors towards the hinged edges of the doors, thus keeping the door chains above the top of the dumped load. Winding the chains 9 on the shaft 5 will draw the sliding supports 2 together, towards the center of the wagon, pushing the doors closed. The door hinges 13, wagon body 14, wheels 15 and axle 16 are shown to give the relative position of the various parts.
In the operating device shown by Figs. 2 & 3, I have shown the ratchet 8 provided with an untoothed circumference 21, the ratchet 8 is pinned to the winding shaft 5 so that they can not rotate independently of each other, the lever 7 is bifurcated so as to be mounted on the shaft 5 each side of the ratchet 8, the lever 7 is free to rotate on the shaft, the pawl 6 is pinned between the sides of the lever 7 so as to engage the teeth on the ratchet 8. The friction brake or strap 4 wraps partly around the untoothed circumference 21 of the ratchet 8, passing between the sides of the lever 7. A head 17 is formed on one end of the brake strap 4 to engage the teeth on the ratchet 8 and to act as a detent, the other end of the brake strap 4 is suitably connected to the wagon side by means of the bracket 20. The brake strap 4 is made so that its elasticity will keep the detent head 17 in operation with the ratchet 8. The de tent head 17 is provided with lugs, formed by a pin passed through the head 17, which project out beyond the sides of the lever 7 and are located so as to engage the surfaces 18 on each side of the lever 7. The surfaces 18 are curved and centered so as to lift the detent head 17 out from and clear of the teeth on the ratchet 8 when the lever is pushed against the lugs on the head 17 at the position on the surfaces 18 to which the detent head lugs slide to produce the necessary clearance between detent head and ratchet teeth, the direction of the surfaces 18 changes abruptly forming a notch which prevents further sliding of the lugs and allows the brake strap 4 to 'be drawn tight against the untoothed circumference 21 of the ratchet 8, thus braking the rotation of the shaft 5. The brake strap 4 is also provided with an edge 19 extending over the toothed circumference of the ratchet 8 so as to engage the pawl 6 and lift it out and clear of the teeth on the ratchet 8, at the same time the detent head 17 is lifted out and clear of the ratchet teeth, as shown by dotted lines on Fig. 3.
The controlling or operating device of my invention, as shown by Figs. 2 and 3, acts in the following manner: Assume a loaded wagon is to be dumped by this device, the door operating chains wound up on the shaft in the direction of the arrow B. To dump move the lever 7 in the direction of the arrow A, the pawl 6 drags over the edge 19 and is lifted clear of the teeth on theratchet 8, at the same time the detent 17 has been engaged by the curved surface 18 and forced out clear of the ratchet teeth also, and the friction brake is drawn tight by the action of the lever 7, the parts named taking the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The pawl and detent being clear of the ratchet, the shaft is held from unwinding by the friction brake, a slight release of the lever 7 in the direction of the arrow B will release the friction brake 4 and the ratchet and shaft will be free to move in the unwinding direction, arrow A. To close the doors-move the lever 7 towards arrow B as far as convenient, then back towards arrow A as far as the position shown in full lines on Fig. 2. Repeat this operation until the doors are closed.
It is to be understood that numerous changes can be made in the design, location and combination of the various parts of my invention without substantially departing therefrom. For convenience I have shown the controlling device on a winding shaft running lengthwise of the wagon and it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit my controlling device to operate a longitudinal shaft only as it can be applied with equal advantage to a transversely or otherwise disposed shaft.
While the mechanism preferably employed for operating the doors is shown and described with considerable particularity, no claim is made herein to such operating mechanism as the same forms the subject-matter of an application Ser. No. 366,154, filed by me April 13, 1907, as a division of this case.
I claim:-
1. In combination with a dumping wagon, a discharging opening, a closure for said opening hinged longitudinally of the wagon at or near the edge of the opening, a swinging support contacting said closure, the axes of the closure and swinging support being separate and parallel, and means for swinging and holding said Support.
2. In combination with a dumping wagon, a discharging opening, a pair of doors for closing said opening hinged longitudinally of the wagon at or near the edge of the opening, supports for the doors arranged to slide on the doors towards and away from the hinge axes when they are opening and closing, and means for operating the Supports.
3. In combination with a dumping wagon, a discharging opening, a pair of doors for closing said opening hinged longitudinally of the wagon at or near the edge of the opening, supports for the doors arranged to slide or roll on the doors towards and away from the hinge axes when they are opening and closing, and means for operating and guiding the supports.
4. In combination with a dumping wagon, a discharging opening, a pair of doors for closing said-opening, hinged longitudinally of the wagon, and means for operating said doors through a rolling or sliding contact with and trans Versely of the doors.
5. In combination with a dumping wagon, a discharging opening, a closure for said opening, hinged longitudinally 10 of the wagon, an operating and supporting device having a n transversely sliding or rolling connection with the closure.
