To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs FAULDER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dump-Wagons, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. A
This invention relates to improvements in dump-wagons in which the dump-box is provided with laterally-swinging bottom doors meeting at substantially the longitudinal center of the box, and refers more particularly to the mechanism by which these doors are raised and lowered. In this class of dumpwagons a rotary drum or shaft is usually mounted in a horizontal position transversely of the box at or near its front end and is connected by suitable chains or cables to the meeting edges of the doors, so that by rotating the drum in one direction the doors are closed and are free to swing to their open position by gravity when the drum is released, thus rotating the drum in the opposite direction. My object is to simplify the means by which this drum is rotated and released by providing a single operating-lever with two pawls at opposite sides of its fulcrum, both of which act upon the ratchet-wheel on the drum as the lever is operated in reverse directions to rotate said drum, and thereby effect a rapid closing of the doors. Another object is to provide means whereby one of these pawls may be operated by hand to not only release itself, but also to engage and release the other pawl for releasing the drum and permitting the doors to swing to their open positions in the act of dumping the load.
Other objects and uses will be more clearly brought out in the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a front portion ofa dump-box and my improved drum-operating mechanism mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. l, of the parts seen in Fig. 1, the doors in both views being shown in their closed positions and the operating-pawls as engaged with the ratchet-wheel. In order to demonstrate the utility of my invention, I have shown a portion of a dumpwagon box 1, having swinging bottom doors 2, hinged to the lower edges of the sides of the box and meeting at substantially the longitudinal center of said box. A suitable 5 drum 3 is journaled on the front end of the box in front of the front end wall 4 and is connected by chains or cables 5 and 6 to the meeting ends of the doors, the manner of connection being similar to that set forth in Pat- 7 ent No. 1,2918, dated March 8, 190a; but as the matter of connection of the chains with the doors and drum is immaterial it is unnecessary to further illustrate or describe the same, except to state that the winding of the drum 75 in one direction operates to close the doors, and the release of the drum permits the doors to swing to their open position by gravity.
In this instance I have shown one end of the drum as protruding from one side of the box and provided with a ratchet-wheel 7. A bracket 8 is secured to the adjacent side of the box, and to this bracket is fulcrumed at 9 ahand-lever 10, carrying two pawls 11 and 12, which are pivoted, respectively, at 13 and 5 14: to the lever equidistant from and at opposite sides of the fulcrum 9. Both of these pawls are engaged with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel in the operation of winding the cables 5 and 6 upon the drum 3 to close the 9 doors 2; but the pawl 11 is somewhat longer than and over-reaches the pawl 12 and is provided on its lower face witha series of notches or shoulders 15, while the pawl 12 is provided with a nib or shoulder 16. These shoulders 15 and 16 are located at the front side of the fulcrum 9, and when the lever is drawn to its upright position, as seen in Figs. 1 and 5, the
rocking arm 20 simultaneously, and thereby r with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel to rotate elevate the pawl 12 out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel 7 as seen in Figs. 4: and 5; but this pawl 12 is, preferably held in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel by its own gravity, aided by a spring 23, which is located between the rocking member 20 and the adjacent side of the lever 10.
In rotating the drum to wind the cables 5 and 6 thereon in the operation of closing the doors the forward movement of the lever 10 brings the pawl 11 into operative engagement the same in one direction, while the rearward movement of the lever 10 brings thepawl 12 into action to continue the movement of the ratchet-wheel in the same direction, and it is therefore seen that the winding movement of the drum is substantially continuous, because the pawls 11 and 12 operate to rotate it in the same direction, while the lever 10 is being moved in the reverse directions back and forth, thereby affording a rapid closing operation of the doors. Now when it is desired to release the drum to permit the doors to swing to their open or dumping positions it is simply necessary to swingthe lever 10 to nearly an upright position, or a little farther back than the position seen in Fig. 4:, until one of the shoulders 15 is brought into the path of upward movement of the shoulder 16 of the pawl 12, whereupon the lever 10 is pushed slightly forward sufficient to relieve the strain on the pawl 12, which is then raised by compressing the rocking member 20 until the rib 16 engages one of the notches 15. The pawl 12 is held in this elevated position and the lever 10 is then drawn rearwardly a slight distance, thus causingthe nib 16 to engage or bite on the adjacent face of the pawl 11,which throws said pawl 11 out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth, thus liberating the drum and doors connected thereto. It is evident from this latter description that owing to the proximity of the pivot 14 of the pawl 12 to the fulcrum 19 a considerable leverage is obtained to lift the pawl 11 out of holding engagement with the ratchet-wheel.
By locating the pawls 11 and 12 on opposite sides of the fulcrum of the lever 10 it is evident that both pawls act as detents to hold the ratchet-wheel and its drum against retrograde movement and that the strain is therefore thrown upon the fulcrum 9, so that the lever 10 may be stopped at any angle or position and still maintain both pawls in their holding positions.
The foregoing description of the construction and operation of my invention is believed to be sufficiently clear and full to enable any one skilled in the art to make, use, and construct my invention.
The bracket 8 is formed with limiting stops or shoulders 25 and 26, which serve the double purpose of limiting the forward and rearward movement and also as a safeguard against accidental release of the drum in case one of the pawls should be accidentally displaced from its holding position. For example, should the pawl 12 be accidentally disengaged from the teeth of the ratchet-wheel the action of said wheel on the pawl 11 would only throw the lever 10 against the stop 26, while if the pawl 11 should be displaced from its holding position the lever would be thrown against the limiting-stop 25.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dump-wagon, the combination with a dump-box having swlnging bottom doors,
. a rotating drum, cables connecting the drum to the doors, a ratchet-wheel on the drum, a pivoted lever, pawls mounted on the lever at opposite sides of the fulcrum and engaging said ratchet-wheel to rotate the drum in the same direction as the lever is rocked in reverse directions, and means to draw one of the pawls out of engagement with the ratchetwheel and into engagement with the other pawl to release the latter pawl from holding engagement with the ratchet for the purpose of releasing the drum.
2. In a dump-wagon, the combination of a dump-box having swinging bottom doors, a rotary drum connected to close the doors, a ratchet-wheel on the drum, a hand-lever ful' crumed at one side of" the axis of the drum, pawls pivoted to the lever on opposite sides of its fulcrum and extending in the same direction from said fulcrum and engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel whereby said ratchet-wheel and drum are rotated in the same direction by the reverse movements of the lever, one of the pawls having its free end lying over the free end of the other pawl, and means to elevate the free end of the lower pawl into engagement with the upper pawl, whereby said pawls are thrown out of holding engagement with the ratchet-wheel.
3. In a dump-wagon, the combination of a dump-box having swinging bottom doors, a rotary drum connected to said doors to close the same, a ratchet wheel on the drum, a bracket on the box, a lever fulcrumed on the bracket above the ratchet-wheel, a pawl pivoted to the lever below its fulcrum and engaging the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, a second pawl pivoted to the lever above its fulcrum and also engaging the teeth of the ratchet whereby said ratchet wheel and drum are rotated in the same direction as the lever is rocked back and forth, shoulders on the adjacent faces of the pawls, and means for elevating the lower pawl to bring it into engagement with the shoulders of the upper pawl whereby both pawls are thrown out of operative engagement with the ratchet-Wheel to release the drum and doors.
4. The combination With the swinging doors,winding-drum and connections between the winding-drum and doors, of a ratchetwheel connected to rotate the drum, the lever and limiting-stops therefor, and pawls on the lever at opposite sides of its fulcrum and engaging said ratchet-wheel, both pawls operating to rotate the ratchet-wheel in the same 5 direction as the lever is rocked back and forth and also holding the ratchet-Wheel from retrograde movement.
