Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnoncn V. "WILLIAMS, a'citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a Combination of Certain Useful Knockdown Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to knock-down receptacles, and more particularly to the class of locking devices for knock-down structures such as boxes, crates or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a locking device wherein the sides, ends, bottom and top of a receptacle,
can be readily and easily fastened to form a unitary structure for the transportation of the contents of such receptacle from one point to another without possibility of the accidental collapsing thereof.
.i-knother object of the invention is the provision of a locking device of this character wherein the employment of nails, screws, or other similar fastening mediums is entirely dispensed with, and which enables the setting up or collapsing of the receptacle in a ready and convenient manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a locking device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure l is a perspective view of the base or bottom of the receptacle constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the end members of the receptacle. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view through the locking device for joining one end and the base or bottom of the receptacle. Fig. 4; is a side elevation of one of the side members of the receptacle. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional View through the cover or top of the receptacle.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective ,view of one corner of the receptacle, showing the side, end and top sections thereof assembled.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 designates the base or bottom of a receptacle, 11 one of the end walls, 12 one of the side walls, 13 the cover or top of the said receptacle, the base or bottom being provided with longitudinal side strips let and cross end strips 15, while formed in each end of the said base or bottom 10 next to the end strips are spaced mortises A, and likewise formed next to each longitudinal strip l t in the said base or bottom are spaced i'i'iortises T, while mounted in each end strip and projecting from its inner face are dowel pins ii, which with the said mortises cooperate with the ends and sides 11 and 12 of the receptacle for the locking of the same to the base or bottom in a manner presently described.
The ends and sides ll and 12 each is formed with intermediate and outer uprights or posts 16 having reduced lower ends 17 correspondingly shaped to the mortises A and T for detachable engagement therein. The reduced ends 17 provide shoulders 38 which limit the insertion of the reduced ends 17 in the mortises A and T- in the bottom or base on setting up the receptacle.
Each end 11 has formed in the uprights or posts 16 near the reduced ends 17 thereof holes 19 which are adapted to receive the dowel pins B mounted in each strip 15 carried by the base or bottom so that in this manner the ends are fastened to the base or bottom. When the ends 11 and sides 12 are engaged with the base or bottom, the said sides abut the end edges of the ends 11 as the slats 20 of the sides are extended, as at F to abut the points f of the said ends so that the sides 12 will not fall inwardly after the fastening of the ends to the base or bottom in a manner hereinbefore set forth.
The cover or top 13 is formed with a frame H which embraces the sides and ends 11 and 12, the uprights or posts 16 of the said sides being extended at c for the engz-zgement of the frame therewith. The ends 11 in their uppermost longer edges are formed with recesses G to receive transversely disposed locking strips P which are mounted in counter seats R formed in the side stretches of the frame H of the top or cover. The ends 11 have secured to their uppermost free longitudinal edges bridge pieces K which overlie the recesses G to retain the locking strips P engaged therein,
the said locking strips being passed through the recesses G and counter seats R in the ends and top, respectively, for the fastening of the top in position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction of the device Will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. In a receptacle, a plurality of knock down walls, the same forming the sides, ends and bottom of said receptacle, longitudinal and cross strips mounted upon the bottom, the said bottom being formed With openings next to the said strips at the inner sides thereof, dovvel pins mounted in the said cross strips, posts carried by the sides and ends and having reduced portions detachably fitted in the openings in the bottom, the posts on the ends being formed With transverse openings for receiving the dowel pins, and a cover embracing the sides sides thereof, dowel pins mounted in the said cross strips, posts carried by the sides and ends and having reduced portions detachably fitted in the openings in the bottom, the posts on the ends being formed with transverse openings for receiving the dowel pins, a cover embracing the sldes and ends, and locking strips engageable With the cover and ends for fastening the cover in place.
