Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, lgl..
Application filed June 4, 1914. Serial No. 42,913.
To all 'w71 om it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN T. Davis, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of TVestchester and State of New York, have invented anew and improved SasliFastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to sash fasteners; and the object thereof is to provide a simple, inexpensive and automatic sash fastener which is burglar-proof, and which fastener will automatically close only when the two sashes of a window are moved to the closed position, whereby injury is prevented to the window bythe fastener'.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combina.- tion and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and Figure l is a plan view of a fastener embodying my invention showing it as applied to sashes in closed position; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the fastener showing the same in open position with the sashes relatively displaced; Fig. 4c is a section similar to Fig. 2 showing the sash fastener locking the sashes at a slightly different position than what is shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the base` plate showing a modified structure of the catch; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of a modified structure of the dog adapted to engage the catch.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it must be clearly understood that my fastener herein disclosed is an improvement over my Patent No. 331,041.
The improvement in the fastener herein described consists in the provision of a dog which retains the latch of the fastener in the open position and of a trigger associated with the dog permitting the release of the Vlatch from the open position, only when the latch and catch therefor of the fastener are moving toward one another.
Referring to the drawings, more particularly to Figs. 1. to 11, inclusive, 7 represents a base-plate having means whereby the same may be secured in a suitable place to the upper sash. Spaced lugs 8 are provided at the interior side of the base plate, and pivotally mounted therebetween is a latch 9. The latch has an elongated slot l0 open at the pivoted end. fi. portion 11 bridges the lower surface of they said slot adjacent the pivoted end; the purpose of the portion 11 will appear hereinafter. rlhe pin l2 which connects the latch to the base-plate 7 carries a spring 13 which normally'tends to force the latch from the open to the closed position, t'. e., from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2. Pivotally mounted in the slot 1G above the bridged portion 11 is a dog 1e provided at the non pivoted end with an opening l5, preferably rectangular in shape, which is adapted to engage a hooked end 16 of a stop 17 forming an integral part of the base-plate 7. The dog 14, at the non-pivoted end, is also provided with a downward projection 18 which rests against the back of the stop 17 under the action of the spring 13 when the latch is in the open position. To prevent the projection 1S of the dog let from maintaining its engagement with the rear of the stop 17 whenthe latch 9 is moved toward the stop, said stop is provided with shoulders 19 on which the non-pivoted end of the dog rests when the latch is in the open position. The dog 14C at the pivoted end is provided with a slot 20; and mounted in the slot on a pivot 21, which connects the dog to the latch, is a trigger 22 the end 23 of which normally projects out of the slot 2O and which end is heavy enough to always bring the other end Q4 of the trigger against the bottom of the slot 20.
Secured to the lower sash is a catch 25 which is adapted to project through the slot l0 adjacent the dog lil, the catch 25 being provided with a suitable base-plate 26 which is provided with means for securing the same to the lower sash. The opening 15 and the projection 18 of the dog 14 are so formed with reference to the stop 17 that when the dog 14:.is in engagement with the stop 17 the lower surface of the latch 9 overhangs 'the inner side of the base-plate 7, as best seen in Fig. 3. This is done for the purpose of causing the disengagement of the dog 14 from the stop 17 when the projecting part 27 of the latch comes in contact with the transverse part of the lower sash which carries the catch 25.
It will be seen from Fig. 3 that as the,
lower sash moves downward inthe direction of the arrow as shown, or the upper sash upward, the latch 9 will be moved toward the upper sash, moving therewith the dog 14, as shown in Fig. 3 in dotted line,
until the upper edge of the sash strikes the end 23 of the trigger 22, which will raise the dog 14 above the stop 17 and permit' as the distance of said boss 29 from the pivot 21 is greater than the distance of the upper edge of said slot 10 from the said pivot. vIf the said dog should be thrown against the upper edge of the slot 10 in the downward movement of said latch, the
. catch 25 will move the same into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
From the above description it will be seen that the latch 9 will engage the catch 25 automatically when the catch or latch are moved toward each other. To disengage the latch 9 from the catch 25 the dog 14 is moved on its pivot 21 by applying a slight pressure to the boss 29, thereby disengaging the projection 18 of the dog from the shoulders 30 or 3l (see Figs. 2 and 4) of the stop 17 and then moving the latch 9 on its pivot until the hook 16 catches the dog as previouslyl described. After the latch has been placed into position shown in Fig. 3, while the sashes are in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the lower sash or the upper sash is moved relative to one another, the upper edge of the lower sash will come in engagement with the end 23 of the trigger 22, moving the same upwardly. The end 24 of the trigger 22 by this movement is cleared from the bottom of the notch 20 in the dog, leaving the dog in engagement with the stop 17 until the projecting part 27 of the latch 9 is engaged by the said edge of the window, when the dog 14 will be moved away from the stop 17, as previously stated. Due to the fact that the action of gravity on the dog 14 always tends to keep the samey in engagement with the stop 17, the movement of the latch on its pivot will only move said dog on the shoulders 19 until the lower sash releases the latch 9, which will bring the projection 18 against the rear of the stop, and the hook will prevent the snapping of l'said dog from the stop no'matter how fast the ylatch v9 moves on its pivot. From lthe above it will be seen that the latch 49 can only be released from the stop when the catch is moved toward the latch or vice versa. Therefore, under no circumstances can the latch 9 break the window carried by the lower sash, as generally happens.
The reason for providing the upper shoulder 31 on thestop 17 is to permit the lockingof the window when` dirt, snow or ice accumulates below the lower sash. rIhe kprovision of the bridging yportion 11 is to prevent the raising of the dog 14 from the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 by inserting a wire between the'sashes, as is generally done by burglars; so that this bridging portion in the latch makesy the same burglar roof. i
p In Figs. 5 and 6 a modified structure of the stop and dog is illustrated. In this case the dog 14, at the nonpivoted end, is provided with notches 32 at the sides thereof in lieu of the opening 15, and, therefore, the non-pivoted end is T shaped, as shown at 33. The stop 17 in this case is provided with a slot, the sides 34 of which slot has a hooked end adapted to be engaged by the T 33 so that ultimately the same result is obtained. The pivoted end of the dog 14 is provided also with a trigger 22, which is similarly operated. f
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantagev of the construction and koperation of the device shown will be read ily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains; and while I shave described the principle ofr operation,
together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merelyillustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
yHaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: f
