To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALvAn A. ALLAN and EDWARD T. ELLIOTT, citizens of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State Of l/Vashington, have invented new and usei'ul improvements in Wrenches, of which the tollowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to that class of wrenches commonly known as monkey wrenches and the primary object of the mvention is to construct a wrench that is susccptible to quick adjustment and which will be effectively sustained at sald adjustment for operating upon an article but whlch also may be easily released from engagement with the article.
A further object of the invention 15 the provision of a wrench which includes a slidable and movable jaw, the said shdable aw being provided with a toothed member that normally contacts with the toothed shank of the stationary jaw and which is normally retained in such engagement through the medium of a spring, the movable aw being further provided with an adjusting element which will move the said jaw toward or away from the stationary jaw after the aw has been looked upon the shank of the stationary jaw.
A still further object of the inventlon is the construction of a wrench which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness to manufacture, effectiveness and strength.
With the above and other ob ects in v ew, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended cla1m.

Referring now to the drawings n detail, 1 designates the wrench in its entlrety, the said wrench including a stationary aw 2 which is formed with a right angular shank 3 which provides the handle for the wrench, and a jaw 4 mounted for slidable movement Specification of Letters Patent.

The shank has its upper face at a distance from its head 2, provided, -for a suitable distance, with transversely arranged teeth 5, the said teeth having one of their side walls beveled toward the head 2, and their opposite side wall vertically straight. The movable jaw i includes a head 6, to which is integrally formed a carriage 7. The carriage and head have their lower portions provided with a rectangular opening, so that the jaw i may be readily slid upon the shank 3 of the jaw 2. The carriage, above its longitudinal shank-receiving passage is provided with a transverse opening 8 which communicates with the said longitudinal passage, the lower wall of the opening being disposed longitudinally of but below the teeth 5, The inner transverse wall provided by the opening 8, or the wall adjacent the head 6 of the jaw 5, is formed with an annular longitudinally extending depression or pocket 10, while the outer wall 11 provided between the opening and the end of the carriage is formed with a longitudinally extending annular passage 12. The passage and pocket are adapted to receive the non-threaded portions 13 and 14: of a headed screw member 15. The threads 16 of the said screw are adapted to engage within the threaded bore 17 of a rounded latch member 18. This latch member has a portion of its perimeter milled, as at 19, and is further provided with a straight longitudinally extending portion 20 that is formed with transverse teeth 21, the said teeth adapted to co-act with the teeth 5 of the shank 3 to lock the movable jaw upon the said shank. What may be termed the rear portion of the annular latch or lock 18 is provided with a recess 22 which is formed with an opening adapted for the reception of a headed securing element 23 whereby a bowed leaf spring 25 is connected with the member 18, the opposite end of the spring being slidably mounted in the opposite end of the recess 22. The spring is arranged in the recess 22 with its bowed portion in frictional contact with the walls of the opening 9, so that it will yieldably hold the lock member 18 in an inoperative position when the serrated portion thereof is turned to bring its teeth 21 out of engagement with the teeth 5 of the shank of the stationary jaw when adjusting the movable jaw, and will also yieldably hold the lock against move ment when it is in an operative position for I threaded opening, for the reception of a suitable member in the nature ota headed screw 26. 7 a v From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

In a wrench of the class set forth, a stationary jaw hav ng an angular shank provided with threads a movable jaw arranged upon the shank, said movable jaw including a headand a carriage, the carriagehaving 'a transverse opening, a" headed threaded member arranged in the carriage and positione'd approximately centrally and longitudinally of the opening of the carriage, a rotatable lock provided with a recess extending part Way around the periphery thereof and a threaded bore, arranged within the opening; in-the; shank and engaged by the threads of the screw, said lock having a series of teeth projecting outwardly, from a portion of.- its periphery t'orw engagement with the, threads onithe annularshank, a leafspring havingitsendsseated in the recess ofthe lock and its intermediate portionrbowed outwardly beyond the periphery of said lock for holding thelatter from rotating when its teeth are in engagement or disengagement with the teeth formed on the shank.v Q, 1. l In testimony whereof we aflix our signa tures inmpresence of1two witnesses.
