Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALvAN A. ALLAN and EDWARD T. ELLio r'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Everett in the county of Snohomish, and State of VVash- 'ington, have invented new and useful Imadapted for use movements in Wrenches, of which the folowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in wrenches which are especially upon pipes, tubes and the like in which a movement of the handle in one direction will cause the jaws to move into tight engagement with the pipe to rotate the same and to he slid from the pipe without reigersing the direction of the turning of the same when a new grip is to be obtained upon the pipe, and the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling withplan view of the same,
in the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a top Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the handle portion of the wrench, Fig. a is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1,. Fig, 6 is a transverse sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a lock member for the movable jaw.
In the drawings, 1 designates the handle for our wrench which has one of its ends provided with a toothed jaw 2, the same providing the stationary jaw for the wrench, and integrally formed with the jaw 2 is a carriage 3, the same being arranged over one of the faces of the handle 1, and com pressing the opposite sides of said handle. The frame 3 is provided with a longitudinal opening 4 through which the shank 5 of the movable jaw 6 passes. The frame 3 is provided with a transverse opening 7 which intersects its longitudinal opening 4, and the outer wall provided by the said opening or the wall adjacent the head 2 is arranged at an upward and inclined angle, as indicated by the numeral 8, and the said wall is extended beyond the opposite sides of the wrench through the medium of arcuate lugs or ears 9 which are integrally formed with the frame. The lower wall of the passage .t at the rear portion of the frame is arranged preferably in a plane with the upper face or edge of the handle 1, and the said lower wall at the forward portion of the carriage is inclined upwardly toward the end of the stationary jaw 12, while the upper faces provided by the said passages opposite the transverse opening 7 are inclined upwardly and outwardly in opposite directions, all of which being clearly illustrated by the drawings. The outer or free face of the carriage is arranged angularly of the straight outer face of the jaw 2, as indicated by the numeral 10, the said face terminating in a horizontally straight shoulder 11 provided by the jaw 2. The opposite walls provided by the longitudinal passage 4: and the opposite walls provided by the openings 7, which communicate with the said passage 4:
are arcuate, and the opposite longitudinal edges of the shank 5 of themovable jaw G are also arcuate, and the said shank is of a lesser thickness than the depth of the pas sage, so that the same will play loosely within the passage. What we will term the upper arcuate face of the jaw 5 is provided mg, what may be termed, their outer wall ameter to project through the opening 7 and extend beyond the opposite sides of the frame 3. The bore 14 has, what may be termed, its upper face provided with teeth 15 which are spaced and engage with the teeth 12 of the shank 5 andwhat we will term the outer face 16 of the said member 13 is rounded from its bottom to its top to provide bulging sideswhich are adapted to engage with the inclined walls provided by the members 9 for a purpose which will presently be described.
The rear portion of the lock at the underface thereof is formed with spaced lugs 17 and 18 of different formation, while secured upon the upper face of the jaw 1 is the fiattened arm 19 of a flat spring member, the said spring having a central inclined portion 20 which terminates in a horizontally straight tongue 21, the tongue being of a lesser width than the portion 19 of the spring, while the edges of the inclined porwith transverse teeth 12, the said teeth hav I tion 20 decrease gradually from their connection with the tongue 20 to the flat arm 19 of the spring. The tongue 21 is adapted to be received between the lugs 17 and 18 of the lock member 13, and the securing element or screw 22 which passes through the flat arm 19 of the spring is adapted to re lug 18 and the spring 20 for holding the 20 v The rounded'face 16 bearing against the V inclined inner face of the wall 8 and its looking member against rotatable movement.
lugs or projections 9 permit of the said member 13 being rotated to permit of the adjustment of the jaw 6, at the minimum amount of physical exertion, and from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity ofthe' device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which .such inventions appertain without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is: i
1. A wrench for the purpose set forth, a handle portion having one of its'ends provided with a stationary jaw which includes a casing, av movable jaw having a shank provided with teeth passing longitudinally through the casing, the said casing having a transverse opening which intersects the passage, lugs formed integrally'with said casing and having an inclined face flush with one wall of the transverse opening in said casing, a rounded lock member having a circular bore, one portion of the wall of said bore being provided with teeth for engagement with the teeth of the shank of the movable jaw, said lock member having one of its ends formed to provide cam surfaces Copies of this patent may be obtained for for cocperation with the inclined walls of said lugs for giving the jaws a final adjust- ,ment, and its underface adjacent the remaining end formed with a pair of spaced lugs, an inclined spring secured to the shank and having its end formed with a tongue which is arranged between the lugs of the look when the wrench is in operative position and to be depressed'by one of said lugs when the wrench is in inoperative position.
In a wrench of the class set forth, a handle having one of its ends provided with a stationary jaw, which includes an integrally formed frame, said frame projecting above the handle, the frame having its outer face inclined and terminating ina horizontal shoulder provided upon the stationary aw, the frame having a longitudinally arranged passage, the walls of which are inclined in opposite directions,'the frame being further provided with an intermediate transverse opening, the outer. wall provided thereby bein inclined, lugs formed integrally with said frame and having an inclined face flush withthe inclined wall of said opening a lock member comprising a rounded element having lugs on its periphery and a rounded bore and teeth formed in a portion of said bore, a spring including a flat arm securely connected with the handle, an inclined portion which terminates in a tongue that is arranged between the lugs of the lock when the wrench is in operative position and to be depressed by one of said lugs when the wrench is in inoperative position, a movable jaw having an angular shank, the said shank having one ofits faces formed with teeth and the said shank adapted to pass through the passage of the frame and the bore of the lock member and to have its teeth engaged by the teeth-of the said lock member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
