Description

A. MOSES. VI$IBLE CARD INDEX. APPLICATION FiLED Nov. 5,

UNITED STATE1TENT OFFICE.
ABRAM MOSES, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
VISIBLE-CARD INDEX.
Application filed November 5, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM MOSES, of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Visible-Card Indexes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated one form in which the invention may be embodied, which has been selected by me for the purpose 'of illustrating the invention, and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings,-Figure l is an elevation partly in section, of a .yisible card index frame, embodying my invention, and designed particularly forsupporting index cards in uniform arrangement, so that the titles or names upon the upper portion of the successive cards are visible. Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional View.
of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmen tary vertical sectional view of the frame showing the method and means of supporting the cards with their upper edges one above the other. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of one of the index cards, showing one of the supporting clips attached. Fig. 5 is, a side and front view f one of the supporting clips. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectionalview of the frame.
1 The object of my invention is to provide a visible card index device adapted especially for use in establishments where it is desirable to ascertain, for instance, if a certain person has an account with the establishment, or other such information, and
where it is necessary to obtain such information in the least possible time. It is to be understood, however, that the device may Specification of Letters Patent.

elevated position, whereby, the upper edges of the cards containing the names or titles are visible from the exterior of the front side of the frame;
Visible card files, heretofore known, have two serious objections, viz., lack of sufficient flexibility and their incapability of use .with ordinary cards, a specially designed anticipates the employment of ordinary stock cards, and as it is often desirable to change from the ordinary file to the visible one, such change can be quickly made with .my improved device Without the necessity of re-writing the cards, by simply attaching two of my improved supporting clips to each card. 5
In the drawings 1 designates my improved index frame, which is preferably composed of sheet metal suitably cut and formed,'and consists of two sections '2 and-3,
-one of which slides on the other, and said frames are adjustably secured together by eye screws 4 which engage screw threaded apertures 5 provided in both of the sections. Theeye screws 4 also act as one part of hinges for supporting the frame, the other part of the hinges being shown at 6.
Each of the sections comprise side bars 7, a top bar 8 and a bottom bar 9, .and the bottom bar of the section 2 forms a support for the lower card, hereinafter described. The side bars 7 ,are bent in the form of hook shaped portions 10, and extend rearwardly .in the shape of, oblique portions 11 which are integral with the rear portions 12. It will be seen from the foregoing, when taken in connection with the drawing, that the frame-is made of two sections, which are adjustable relatlve to one another to accommodate different numbers of cards, by
means of the eye screws 4:.
Ordinary stock cards 13 are adapted to be used in connection with myfiling frame,
by applying supporting clips 14 to the lateral edges of said cards near the bottom edge; and each of these clips 14 is preferably stamped out ofa single piece of metal and consists of a supporting part 15 having a rearwardly bent tongue 16 provided with an'oblique edge 17, and a securing part 18, which has a tongue 19 for insertion in a slot 20 in the part 15 when the clip is bent on the line 21. After the clips have been applied to the cards the cards are inserted in the frame, by simply flexing said cards and allowing their lateral edges to enter the hook shaped parts 10. The oblique edges 17 of the clips will then engage the oblique portions 11 of the frame and be guided thereby and the sharp ends of the tongues 16 will engage the rear portions 12 of the frame.
It will be seen that the clips of each card act as a support for the card above so that the upper edges of the cards containing the names will all be apparent from the eXterior and should it be necessary to insert a card between two cards already in the frame the same can be accomplished by raising the upper card of the two cards between which the additional card is to be inserted.
While I have selected one embodiment of my invention for the purpose of illustrating the same, I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as variations therein may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Ina visible card index, a frame, cards movable in said frame and guided thereby, and separate means secured to each of said cards for supporting the card above, whereby cards may be inserted between twowf said cards without removing'the same from the frame.
mg, witnesses.
2. A visible card index device comprising an extensible frame, and cards provided with supporting clips for the cards above, mounted in said frame.
3. A visible card index device comprising a frame formed of two sections adjustably connected together; and cards provided with supporting clips for the cards above, mounted in said frame. 7
i. A visible card index device comprising a frame consisting of two sections, one of which slides on the other, means for adjustably securing said sections together, and
supportthe card above in elevated position.
6. A clip for use in visible card filing systems consisting of a plate stamped from a single sheet of material and bent to form a supporting side and a securing side, said supporting side being provided with a rearwardly extending tongue having an oblique edge and also with a slot, and said securing side being provided with a tongue adapted to pass through a card and through the slot to secure the clip upon a card.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ABRAM MOSES. Witnesses:
