To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, ALBERT T. Weiss, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelf- Sections for Metallic Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a 'full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

My present invention relates to metallic furniture and particularly to that type of sectional furniture designed for oflice and library use such as bookcases and filing cabinets, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple form of shelf section of a kind adapted to be employed in providing a ledge or shelf forwardly of a section of less front and rear depth than that on which it rests, the improvement being directed in part to the manner of securing or looking the section in place.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

A shelf section of the type here involved is brought into use when, for instance, a small card index cabinet section is superposed upon and at the rear of a larger drawer or other section, the shelf performing both the function of finishing ofl the forward part of the top of the under section and of providing arest or ledge for the drawers or other contents of the upper section.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the-lower or supporting section of such a combination, 2 the upper section and 3 the shelf section. The latter Specification 'of Letters Patent.

may comprise a metallic plate turned downwardly at its frontkedge as indicated at 4 and thence rearwardly to provide a supporting flange 5. At its lateral edges it is similarly formed in the present instance as shown at 6 and 7 (Fig. 2) where it rests on the side Walls 8 of the lower section.

The front flange rests in a suitable seat 9 at the front edge of the lower section that is backed with flanges 10 cut away at 11 (Fig. 4) to permit the engagement with or disengagement from the flange 5 of a. sliding bolt 12 that thus releasably secures down the forward portion of the shelf section. The flanges 10 engaging the edge of the flange 5 define the extreme rearward position of the section.

The rearward portion of the shelf is provided with a flange turned downwardly at 13, thence rearwardly at 14 and thence upwardly at 15 constituting a seat to receive a downwardly and rearwardly turned flange 16 at the front of the upper section 2. The ends of the upstanding flange portion 15 of the shelf are cutaway, as shown at 17 (Fig.- 4:) to permit engagement above the flange 16 of a sliding bolt 18 that releasably secures the flange in its seat in the manner of the bolt 12 at the front. Both bolts may be retained in operative position by thumb screws 19.

The connection, indicated generally by 20, may be of various kinds so far as the present invention is concerned and either a rigid or a sliding bolt 21 may be employed there also, but it is preferable that the edges of the respective sections be arranged to interlock by a forward movement of the upper one relatively to the lower one;

It will be observed that the shelf section 3 is securely held against lifting and against rearward movement at its forward portion by the bolt 12 and flanges 10; that lifting at its rear edge is opposed by the weight of the upper section 2 as well as the bolt 18 a single connecting medium between the lower section and both upper sections being employed at this point, while the upper section 2 is held against rearward movement and its true position accurately defined by the upright flange 15 of the shelf section.

Other features of sheet metal construction shown but not described herein will form the subject matter of separate applications additional hereto.

I claim as my invention: 1. In metallic sectional furniture, the combination with a supporting-section, of a detachable shelf section located in a forward position on the latter, said shelf sec tion being narrower from front to rear than the supporting section, means for releasably securing the front of the shelf section to the supporting section and a detachable upper section located in a rearward position on the supporting section to rest directly thereon in rear of the shelf section and beneath the forward portion of which upper section the -rear of the shelf section is confined.

2. In metallic sectional furniture, the combination with a supporting section, of a detachable shelf section located in a forward 7 position on the latter, means for releasably securing the front of the shelf section to the supporting section, a detachable upper section located in a rearward position on thesupporting section and having its forward portion resting upon a rearward portion of the shelf section and a common releasable securing means for the rear of the shelf section and the front of the upper section.

upwardly turned portion being provided with an opening, means for releasably securing the front of the shelf section to the supporting section, a detachable upper section located in a rearward position on the supporting section and having a downwardly and thence rearwardly turned flange at the front thereof resting on the similarly formed flange of the shelf section and forwardly of its upwardly turned portion and a releasable horizontally movable securing means engaging on the rearwardly turned portion 0 the flange on the upper section and projecting through the opening in the upwardly turned portion of the shelf section flange.
