To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN Sermon, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Clips for Temporary Binders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in temporary binder clips, and relates more particularly to binders of the type which hold the loose leaves or other matter to be bound, by spring ch as.

'l he primary object of the invention is to provide an improved clip in which maximum tension of the spring on the jaws is obtained, and in which the spring will effectively hold the jaws in open position, when the binder is opened to receive or enable leaves to be removed.

Further the invention aims to provide a clip in which the spring has an improved mounting that acts to effectively retain the spring in position in the opening and closing movements of the jaws.

Still further, the invention aims to provide a simplified means for connecting the jaws in which the pivotal connection or pin is disposed in close proximity to the under face of the arch of the spring to thereby derive maximum holding efficiency from the spring when the jaws occupy closed position.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation of a binder equipped with clips constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the clips in open position; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing the clip in closed position; and Fig. 4- is a top plan view of the clip in closed position.

In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a 'pair of jaws 1 are employed which are preferably formed of sheet metal strengthened by longitudinal corrugations 2. 6, the stops 6, of the jaws being for engagement with the upper side of the ear of the opposite jaw, as depicted in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby it will be seen that the aws are positively restricted in the opening movements. Each jaw has a pair of outwardly projecting nubs 7, which are preferably struck-out from the jaws and incline downwardly with respect thereto as shown in F ig. of the drawings. The nubs 7, are located in such position that their noses engage the inner faces of the end portions of the C-shap ed spring 8, when the jaws are in closed position, and they have their under faces engaging the inner faces of the end portions of the spring when the jaws occupv open position, as depicted in Fig. 1, of the drawings. The nubs act to provide bearings for the spring in the opening and closing movements thereof, and by virtue of the spring-ends engaging the under or outer faces of the nubs, when the jaws occupy open position, it will be seen that the jaws are thereby securely held in open posit on, since the spring ends which are now above the pivotal connections of the jaw;v tend to draw the nubs together, as is apparent from Fig. 1. of the drawings. When the jaws are closed. the pin 4 occupies a position directly beneath and in close relation to the highest point of the arc of the spring. which thus enables maximum act on of the spring. in retaining the jaws closed. to be obtained, which action is accentuated by the fact that the ends of the springs are disposed conside ably below the pivotal connections of the jaws. From Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, it will further be seen that the pivotal connections of the jaws move from po nts considerably below the ends of the spring, when the jaws are open, to po nts cons derably above the' pi otal connections when the jaws a e closed. which effects superior holding effectiveness of the jaws. In other words the pi otal connections mo e on opposite s des of the dead center wh ch latter is reached during the opening and closing mo ements of the jaws.

What is claimed is:
