Application filed April 10, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME VICTOR GRAY- BILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Targets, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in targets, and particularly to such as are especially adapted for use in shooting galleries. v
The object in view is the production of a target of simple and cheap construction which is at the same time attractive and diverting.
l/Vith this and further objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a view in front elevation of a target gallery embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough taken on the plane indicated by the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail rear elevation thereof, a fragment only being illustrated. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the targets detached. Fig. 5 is a plan View of a blank for one of the targets.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a supporting frame of any ordinary type adapted for sustaining the rows of targets, and to this end is provided with horizontal beams or supporting bars 2, 2. Extending longitudinally of each beam 2 is a pivot rod or pintle 3 which is engaged by the eyes of the several targets 4, the ends of each rod 3 being supported by eyes 3 engaging the beams 2. Each target 4 consists preferably of an elongated body terminating at its free or upper end in a circular or head portion and at its lower or pivoted end being formed with a tongue which is rolled to produce an eye 5, the eye being disposed for receiving the respective rod 3. At each side of the tongue from which the eye 5 is formed, the material of the body is stamped outwardly, forming outstanding tabs or feet 6, 6 which are disposed in position for resting upon the upper edge of the respective beam 2 when the respective Specification of Letters Patent.

target is in its elevated position, and to thereby support the target in such position. Each target therefore is pivotally sustained and adapted when struck from the front to swing rearwardly. In the rear of each battery or row of targets is arranged a baillike rod 7 and the several rods 7 are connected by a cable 8 or other suitable connecting means which extends upwardly and about a guiding pulley 9 and forwardly to a convenient point for operation. rThe several rods 7 are pivoted as by engaging eyes 7 to the frame 1 and are adapted to normally be maintained in a substantially horizontal position in the` rear of the respective targets for receiving the same when pivoted rearwardly'as indicated in Fig. 2. It will be observed that a forward pull on the forward portion of the cable 8 will elevate the several rods 7 and thus restore all of the targets which have been knocked down.
Each target 4c is obviously susceptible of various changes in size and proportion, but preferably the lower end portion of each target is widened beyond the width of the main body portion so that the feet 6 lie partly or entirely outside the planes of the edges of the body portion. This spacing of the feet obviously increases the bearing of the target on its supporting bar and avoids accidental dislocation of the target. Furthermore, the feet 6 may be shaped to have the appearance of human or other animal feet and the respective target may be dressed to have the appearance of a doll so that when struck it will be caused to swing backwardly and turn up its toes.
Each of the targets 4 is adapted to be stamped from sheet material, and as clearly indicated in Fig. 5 a stamped blank will have the general contour of the finished target with the tongue and tabs or feet extended substantially in line with the body, the completion of the target consisting merely in bending up the feet to their operative position and rolling up the tongue to form the eye.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In. a target structure, the combination with a support, of beams carried thereby, rods secured to said beams and in spaced relation thereto, targets, a tongue on said targets said tongue being rolled to form an eye In testimony whereof I affix my signature to receive said rods, feet on(l lid targets in presence of two Witnesses.
