THE MORRIS PETERS CO. FHOTO-LITHO.. WASHINGTON, D C
UNITED STAILFS PATENT FFI@E.
LEO RANNEY, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOUNTAIN-PEN.
Application led January 15, 1913.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, Luo RANNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in fountain pens and has for its object to provide an improved means for indicating at all times the amount of writing fluid in the pen.
I am aware that devices have been invented for a similar purpose which comprise the use of openings at different points along the barrel of the fountain pen, but this is a more or less impractical construction in that it requires several apertures or openings in the barrel which require sealing up and which do not indicate the amount of fluid in the pen accurately unless the level thereof happens to lie in the plane of one of the openings. In my device, however, I am enabled to observe at a glance the exact amount of fluid contained in the pen and I am enabled to dispense with all openings in the side of the pen barrel. u
Other objects will be apparent as set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fountain pen, a portion being broken away to show my improved device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3, 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. fi is a side elevation of a slight modification. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the saine. Fig. 6 is a cross section through the barrel of the pen showing a modified construction. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 8 is a side view partially in section of an iinproved form of my device as applied to a self-filling type of pen. Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the saine.
Like numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawing, in which- 10 designates a form of fountain pen having the usual threaded oint at 11 and carrying a pen 12 at the front portion thereof. The form shown in Fig. 1 is a form of selffiller in which the barrel 13 contains the collapsible sack or bag 14- in the interior thereof. rThe transparent glass cap 15 is convex, as indicated at 16, provided with the reduced shoulder 17, and is located in the end of the barrel 13, being securely seated therein.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.. 12, 1915.
serial No. 742,275. l'
Vhat I term the indicating strip 19 formed of white material, such as enamel or white glass, is located forwardly of the cap 15 and connected thereto by the stud or shoulder 20. The reduced shoulder portion 17 serves to press the ends of the bag 14 against the interior of the fountain pen barrel 13, the end thereof being sealed by the cap 15. When it is desired to ascertain the amount of ink in the fountain pen the same is placed in a horizontal position, as indicated in Fig. '2, whereupon the ink 21 will flow around the indicating strip 19. Upon glancing through the transparent cap 15 the uncovered portion of the indicating strip 19 will be apparent to the observer, whereupon he may readily recognize the amount of ink in the fountain pen, the level of the ink being clearly shown against the white material of the indicating strip 19. The convex portion 16 of the glass cap 15 acts as a lens so that the view obtained therethrough will be slightly magniiied, thus aiding the observer.
In the form shown in Fig. 4, I have located the connecting shoulder or stud 20 at the bottom, of the cap 15. I
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have indicated still another modification comprising a separate cap 15 and indicating strip 19', the latter comprising a comparatively narrow strip of white material, such as enamel or glass, provided with the acute angle lower edges 9.5 seated in and firmly held in the undercut slot 26 in the barrel of the pen, as shown in Fig. 7. This mounting serves to secure the indicating strip 19 firmly in upstanding position so as to be readily seen upon looking through the glass cap 15. u
In Figs. 8 and 9 I have illustrated a modification of my device in which I have applied the invention to that type of pen known as self-filling and more especially to the type of self-filling pen which utilizes a collapsible rubber sack 35 inside 4r*the barrel 36. The operation of this type of pen is well known to those skilled in the art, and comprises generally some means to collapse the sack 85, the resiliency thereof being utilized to draw ink thereinto. This operation does not form a part of my present invention and I have not felt it necessarv to illustrate the operating mechanism thereof. In applying my constructionto this type of pen, I provide the sack 35 with its outer end open. The plug 30 of transparent material similar to that shown in the forms of device described above, is provided with a sleeve 31 arranged to extend inwardly in the barrel 36 of the pen. This sleeve 3l is provided with a corrugation or rib 32 and is spaced inwardly of the barrel 36 a slight distance so that it may grip and rmly press the end of the sack 35 against the inner wall of the pen barrel 36, the rib 3icoacting with the sack to firmly hold it in position. The end of the sack 35 being stretched around the sleeve 31y it will seat in the groove 33 of the rib 32, further insuring an ink-tight joint. An indicating memberl 34C of like colored opaque material is carried by the sleeve 3l to coact with the transparent plug 30 as in the other forms of my device,
Thile I have shown Yand describedmy invention with more or less particularity, I do not wish to be unduly restricted to such showing or description beyond the scope of thev appended claims.
l`. A fountain pen having a barrel, a
transparent plug member in and substantially flush with the end of said barrel, and an elongated indicating member in said barrel adjacent said plug and spaced therefrom, said member being adapted to permit free fiow of ink thereabout.
2. In combination, a fountain pen barrel, a collapsible ink receptacle therein, said barrel and receptacle being both open at one end, means providing a fluid tight ciosure for such open ends, said means being transparent whereby the amount of ink in said receptacle may be observed, and an indicating member of opaque light colored material spaced from said closure and arranged to permit the flow of ink between it and the closure.
In testimony whereof7 I have subscribed my name.
