Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1e15,
Application filed April 8, 1913. Serial No. 759,758.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN P. DORAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Drinking-Cup; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and, use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful drinking cup.
As an object of the invention, it isthe aim to provide an improved sanitary and handy drinking cup having means whereby the same may be attached detachably to the side of a bucket or .pail, with the open portion of the bucket against the side of the pail, whether on the interior face or exterior face of the side, so as to prevent foreign matter or particles from adhering to the interior of the cup, and enabling workmen to attain or secure a sanitary drink of water, and in the homes it may be used with better satisfaction than a dipper or drinking glass.
The feature of this invention is to construct this attaching means from the handle of the cup. In other words, a piece of the handle is struck up therefrom and formed into a curved hook, so shaped as to engage over the upper periphery of the pail or bucket in order to hold the cup to the bucket or pail, inthe manner stated above. The opening left in the handle by a struck up curved hook constitutes means whereby a secure and firm grip upon the handle may be insured.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved drinking cup. Fig. 2 is a sectional View, showing the cup suspended upon the outside of a pail or bucket. Fig. 3 shows a modified construc tion of cup suspended on the inner face of the side of the pail, in which modified construction, the hook is formed by bending and shaping the material from which the handle is formed. It will be understood that the hook may be a separate piece from the handle, if desired.
Referring more particularly to the drawmgs, 1 designates the usual form of drinking cup, while 2 denotes the handle thereof. The handle is constructed from a piece of sheet metal bent to the proper contour and provided with rolled or beaded edges 3, and secured at, 1 by rivets and soldering or welding in the usual manner. Prior to attaching the handle a strip is struck up therefrom and designated by the numeral 5, and which is curved in a suitable contour to form a hook 6, which is designed to engagetheupper periphery of the bucket or pail, in such a manner, such as shown in Fig. 2, with the open portion of the cup against the side of the pail or bucket, thereby preventing foreign matter from entering the cup. Before attaching the handle, the same is shaped substantially elliptical. After attaching the handle the upper arch thereof assumes a position slightly above the upper periphery of the cup, so that the spring tongue projecting therefrom is adjacent the upper periphery of the cup, overlying the same and extending downwardly and toward the center of the bottom of the cup, thereby constituting means, as before stated, for bold ing the cup with its open portion against the sides of a pail. l/Vhen holding the cup, the ball of the thumb engages or covers the opening 7, which is left after striking this curved spring tongue hook from the handle, while the forward end of the thumb engages the curvature of the spring tongue hook, thereby preventing slipping of said handle.
In Fig. 3 the struck up hook is eliminated, and in lieu thereof, the material or strip of metal from which the handle is formed, is made long enough, in order to construct the hook. For instance, the material from which the handle is formed is bent upon itself at 8, and the material beyond the bent portion, as at 9, is bent to conform to the curvature of the handle, for a short distance, while the remaining portion of the material therebeyond is formed into a hook 10, which is adapted to engage the upper periphery of the side of the pail, as shown in Fig. 8. Just beyond the bent portion 8, the handle, and a portion of that portion of the material from which the hook is formed is secured by a rivet and soldering 11 and 12 to the side of the cup, as in the usual manner.
The opening 7 in Fig. 3 of the drawings is to be used for the same purpose as the opening 7 in Figs. 1 and 2. However, the opening 7 is not formed by the striking up of the curved hook, but is intentionally cut in the handle, so as to constitute means to insure a secure and firm grip.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to a metallic cup only, but that the invention includes any kind of a cup or measurer, where a handle and hook as set forth maybe required.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination with a drinking cup bowl, a substantially elliptical handle comprising a strip of sheet metal having its end portions secured to the drinking cup bowl, said handle having its upper arch arranged slightly above the upper periphery of the cup, said arch of said handle having a curved spring tongue projecting therefrom and arranged Copies of this patent may be obtained for adjacent the upper periphery of the cup and overlying the periphery and extending JOHN P. DORAU.
