CIGAR-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
Application filed November 8, 1913. Serial N 0. 799,955.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELvAH O. BULMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cigar cutters, and more particularly to a small implement which can be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user.
The object of the invention is to provide a cigar cutter comprising a pair of pivoted members provided with relatively sharp cutting edges which are so positioned as to prevent injury to the user.
With the above and other objects in view,
the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a tool embodying my invention shown in closed position; Fig. 2 is the same, opened and ready to serve as a cigar cutter; and Fig 3 is an elevation of the device in the operation of removing a bottle cap.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents the main body of the tool, preferably formed of sheet metal and terminating at one end in a screw driver 2. The opposite end of the body 1 is formed into a ring 3, through which the finger of the user may be inserted. One edge of the body intermediate its ends is provided with a hook 4 adapted to engage the projecting edge of a bottle cap 5 and to pry the same from the mouth of the bottle, the screw driver end 2 engaging the surface of the cap and serving as a fulcrum during this operation. The space between the hook and the body 1 terminates in a substantially circular opening 6, the edge of which is preferably sharpened to form a shear edge, and a pivoted member 7 pivotally attached to the body at 8 is provided with a corresponding semi-circular recess adapted to register with the circular opening 6 when the member 7 is turned to open position, and to form a complete circular opening sufficiently large to receive the end of a cigar. Closing the member 7 will swing the semi-' circular cutting edges past each otherand sever the tip of the cigar. One end of the p1voted member 7 is also formed in a ring substantially a duplicate of the ring 3 on the main body 1, and one surface of this member is provided with a series of corrugations 9 which sufiiciently roughen the surface so that it will serve the function of a match scratcher. The pivoted member 7' near the pivot 8 thereof is provided with two shoulders 10 and 11 substantially 90 apart, and a stop in the form ,of a pin 12 or a projecting portion of the metal of the body 1 engages these shoulders at the extremity of the movement of the pivoted member in either direction, thus limiting the movement of the'same.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that an extremely simple, cheap and compact combination tool is obtained which combines the four desirable articles described, which will operate successfully to perform each of its functions, and which may be easily carried in the pocket where it is accessible and in readiness at all times.
WhatI claim is In a cigar cutter such as described, a pair of pivoted members having cutting edges provided therein, means for limiting the movement of said members so that the cutting edge of one member will be spaced inwardly at all times from the opposite edges of the other member, and a hook surrounding the cutting edge of the other member,
whereby this last-mentioned cutting edge' Will be confined within the limits of said other member thereby positioning said cutting edges to prevent injury to the person using the device for any purpose.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELV H O. BULMAN.
