l Thisinvention ,consists'ofa spiral spring, which is `expanded by a cone and screw to retain the bristles between the spring and` the sides of the'shell or bris` A is the handle of thepaintlbrush, which is receivedinthesocket bof lthe shell BJ- f B, the cup or shell, made either circular or oval, to receive the base ot' thef bristles E, and with a socket, li, to receive the handle A of the brush.
` C is a spiral springer cylindrical coil of Wire, occupying the center of the; shell B and resting on the bottom'of the same, the lower coils of which are soldered together, or otherwise fastened, the :upper coils fitting closely` together, but` free to expand by the insertion of the cone Dlf D, thecone or expandeneither the `frustnmpf a cone in shape or oval, the smaller part or point entering the interior ofthe spring C, and, by the insertion Letters Patent No. 112,387, ted'march 7 1871' IMPROVEMENT lNrPAlNT-BRUSHES.
'.ifheschedme referredl to in these Iletter Patent and making part of the same.
ofthe screw d, expands the upper coils of the former and retains the bristles E between the spring and the sides of the shell B. Y
The operation of this device is as follows:
r IThe shell B is iilled with bristles E, and the cylini drical spring C is inserted in the center of theformer, contaningthe cone D, with the screw d the latter .being now screwed` into the handle A, the upper coils of the spring expand as the cone enters the spring, the
, screw securely fastens the whole, and the bristles are securely held and retained between the spring and the sides bvb of the/shell B.
The brush, t; ve., the bristles, can be replaced by newr ones when worn ont.
What I claim as my invention is-.-
The cylindrical or oval expanding spiral spring O, with its corresponding hollow cylindrical or oval base, in combination with the cone D, either circular or oval, the cup or shellB, either cylindrical ory oval, Vwith its socket b, screw 1l, handle A, and bristles E,
substantially as and for the purposes described.
l In testimony that I claim the foregoing paint-brush "I have hereuntoA set my hand this 3d day of November, 1870. l
