Description

F. BRUGKER. SPRING HINGE. APPLIOATION FILED JAN.16,1914.

FRANCIS BRUCKER, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
SPRING-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.,
Application filed. January 16, 1914. Serial No. 812,560.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS BRUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- I-Iinges, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates' to improvements in double acting spring hinges for doors and has, among others, for its objects to provide various improved details of construction of advantage in the operation of the hinge.
The invention therefore includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a double acting spring hinge with the casing in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the door is indicated at 2 and the floor or base at 3. The frame which holds the working parts of the hinge comprises a bar 4 having one end turned downwardly, as indicated at l, and the other end turned upwardly at an angle of approximately 45, the latter being provided with holes for the reception of screws for fastening the bar securely to the door. The spring 5 has one end adapted to adjustably bear against the turned down end 4c, and I provide a double adjustment at this point, one longitudinal for varying the tension of the spring and the other lateral for bringing the door into exact alinement with the door casing. The adjustment of the tension is effected by means of a nut 6 threaded on a screw 7 secured to said end 4a. The lateral adjustment is secured by having the reduced end of said screw passed through a laterally elongated slot l in said end 4a, and held in position by a clamp nut 8.
The hinge post 9 is of improved construction, and is made integral with the base plate l0. This latter plate has formed integral therewith a flat-topped circular boss 10', upon the upper face of which rests the lower face of the plunger 11. This plunger has a shank l1a which extends for a suitable distance within the spring, and has side' recessed portions 11b designed to bear against curved wings 9a of the post 9. The post preferably has a bracing web 9b. The lower face of the head Il of the plunger rests on the upper face of the boss 10a, while its upper face bears against the under side of the bar 4. In order to reduce friction as the door swings, I provide on the top of the post a ball carrier 12 having a ball race `for balls which bear against the under side of the bar 4l. The hinge is held to the base plate by a hinge pin 13 which has its head countersunk in the boss 10, and its upper end provided with a clamping nut 13a. The sides of the spring are ineased by ornamental side plates 24C which overlap each other at the rear. As will be seen from the drawings the plates cover the turned up end of the frame.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is r- 1. In a spring hinge, a frame open at its lower side, a post with means for connecting it to the floor and having an enlarged base or boss with a fiat upper surface, a pivot pin passing through the post and frame, and a spring pressed shank guided between the boss and frame, and bearing against the post.
2. A spring hinge comprising a stationary post, a frame pivotally connected thereto, a plunger bearing against the post, a spring bearing against the plunger at one end and against the frame at the other end, and means independent of the plunger for effecting lateral adjustment of said other end of the spring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS BRUCKER.
