No. 288,273. Patented Nov. 18, 1883.
i` Nrrnn STATES f PATENT trice.,
CHARLES E. STELLER, OF llILWAUKEE, VISCONSIN.
sAsH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,273, dated November 13, 1883,
" Application med May 1,1883. (man.)
a citizen of the United States, residing at Mil waulree, in the county of Milwaukee and State 5 of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
sash-fasteners, and pertains to the peculiar construction of the parts, whereby they are held in operative contact between the inclos-Y ing cap and stile by contact with such parts, without screws or rivets.
My invention is further explained by ref erence to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front view of my fastener in position for holding the sash. Fig. 2 is a rear view, showing the relative arrangement of the parts. Fig.l 3 is a side view, and Fig. Li a rear view of the retaining-cap with theloperative parts removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cam-lever,and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the friction-bearin g which supports the sash. p Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters throughout the several View s. A is the windowstile. f B is the window-casing. Gis the retaining-cap. The cap C is provided with supporting-shoulders D D, cast 4 thereon, and hole E, cast therein, said hole being for the reception of pintle F, formed on one 4o side of the cam-lever G.
The friction-block H is provided with a broad smooth bearing-surface, I, which pro- `iects at right angles forward, above and below the plate J, whereby said bearing-surface, when in contact with the casing, prevents the friction-block from moving laterally in the cap.
K K are arms formed on the friction-block,
My invention relates to improvements in,
which have bea-rings within the cap' C, against the shoulders D D, and serve to support said block when pressed outward by the cam-lever. The rear surface of the friction-block H and arms K K are in line with each other, and are adapted to bear against the front smooth surface of the stile. The cap, with the operative parts contained therein, is secured to the stile by ordinary screws, L L. The face of the friction-bearing I is provided with one or more grooves, M M, to increase its friction, and for the reception of the head of the retaining-pin N, whereby the sash is more securely fastened when closed.
As shown inAFig. 2, the friction-block H is released` from `pressure of the cam O as the lever Gis raised, and is pressed against the sash as said lever is pressed downward.
The inner edge of the plate J is shaped to conform to the shape of the cam, so that the point of Acontact of said cam with said bearing, when said lever is down, is brought in a direct line between the pintle F and the center of the friction-bearing, whereby the resistance of the casting to the cani is brought directly against the pintle, and such resistance has no tendency to raise said cam-lever or release the cam. x
'I am aware that, heretofore window-sash have beenheld in place by a sliding frictionblock actuated by an eccentric lever within a retaining-plate, as shown in Patent No. 160,712, dated March 9, 187 5, and Patent No. G51-,160, dated April 23, 1867. not broadly claim such device as my own.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
` 1. In that class of sash-holders having a movable friction-block actuated by a camlever, the plate J, having horizontal retaining-arms I( II, and friction bearing-block II, projecting above, below, and in front of said plate, in combination with lever G, provided I therefore do to retain said lever in saidcap in Contact with and eanilever G, substantially as and for the said plate, all substantially as and for the purpurpose speoied. pose specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 2. In a sash-fastener, the friction-block H, presence of two Witnesses.
5 provided with friction bearing-surfzmev I, pro- CHARLES E. STELLER.
vided with one or more retaining-grooves, M. Vitnesses: M, in combination With retaining-plate C, stile JAS. B. ERWIN, A, and stop N, adapted to fit into grooves M, H. V. WILSON.
