STOP-MOTION DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. SHEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Essex Fells, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Stop-Motion Device, of which the following is a specification.
This is a division of my application Serial No. 332,470, filed August 29, 1906 for a printing machine.
The present invention relates particularly to that class of job printing machines known as self-feeding automatic platen presses and relates particularly to an automatic trip motion and detector.
The principal. objects of the invention are to trip the press whenever there is no sheet in the same or if the sheet to be printed does not come down to an absolute register; also to provide a stop motion which shall act automatically in such a way that its connections will operate the eccentric shaft which keeps the frame from coming into contact with the platen of the press.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a tripping mechanism which will trip the press automatically without causing a sudden jar, which would tend to disarrange or perhaps break parts of the mechanism.
Other valuable features, as Well as a preferred form of carrying out the invention, are disclosed in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tripping mechanism, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views of the same.
The reference numeral 1 indicates the side frames of the machine, for suitably supporting the component parts of the same. The same frames are connected in any suitable and convenient manner.
5 indicates the bed carrying the inking mechanism of well known construction. The bed is pivoted in the frame and oscillates in the well known manner through the instrumentality of the connection 7 and a crank 8 carried by the main shaft 2 on one side of the machine.
Between the side frames and adjacent to the feed (see Fig. 1) is located the registering table 20, which is supported on and between brackets 21. The brackets are pivoted on a shaft 22.

The shaft 22 is rotated by any means, as a train of gears including a gear 166, pinion 167, gear 168 and intermediate gear 169 meshing with the large gear 3 on the shaft 2.
On the bracket 21 is freely mounted a rocking shaft 51 carrying a part of the tripping device. Another part of said device is mounted upon a shaft The operation of these shafts and the tripping device will be explained later.
The shaft 52 is rocked by means of a lever 61, carrying a roll 62 in engagement with a cam 63 on the shaft 22.
Suitable means for tripping the machine and stopping the action of the same, when for some reason or other a sheet should misfeed or become stuck on the table before reaching the turning lip 65, are provided, and in the present instance, takes the following form.
On the shaft 51 on the table is mounted an arm 142 which is connected by a link 143 with a pivoted arm 141, which is adapted to raise a wedge block 14-5 by engaging a pin 116 carried by the same. This wedge block 115 is conveniently located in an aperture 117 in a bracket a on the frame. Through the same aperture slides a rod 148, which is connected at 1&9 with the eccentric bushing 150 on the bed 5, which is usually found in presses of this character. on the other end of this rod is a stop 151.
Upon the shaft 51 is mounted an arm 152, which is connected by means of a tape 153 with a friction roll 15% supported by an arm 155 mounted upon the rock shaft 52, as above stated. This friction roll rests on the turning lip 65. When a sheet passes over the table and reaches the said turning lip, the shaft is rocked by the cam 63, lifting the said friction roll 15% and allow ing the sheet to pass. This motion is very slight, and the friction roll comes down on top of the paper immediately after the same has passed 011 the turning lip. The passing of the paper under the friction roll has the effect of turning the same, thereby winding up the tape 153, rocking the shaft 51, which, in turn, has the effect of raising the wedge block 145, thus permitting the rod 148 to pass through the aperture 147 as the bed oscillates. When, however, no sheet passes under the friction roll, the means for lifting the wedge block will not be actuated, and the same will remain down and the slanting side'156 will engage the slanting surface 157 of the rod 148, thus presenting a gradually increasing obstacle to the passage of said rod, until the same will be stopped. This has the effect of turning the eccentric bushing 150, thereby preventing the form from printing on the platen.
A lever 158 projects into the path of the wedge block 145, and is kept there to lock the wedge block by means of the spring 159. A depending tail 160 of the lever is in the path of the stop 151 so that at every stroke of the press the said lever will be acted upon to allow of the raising of the said wedge block 1 15. To ease the motion of the rod 148, the same passes through a pivoted bushing 161.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred form in which my invention may be embodied, and while I have shown it as it may be constructed when used in connection with a particular type of printing machine, I am aware that many modifications may be made therein, and that theinvention can be adapted for use with other types of printing machines by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction shown and described, but
What I do claim is 1. In a printing machine, in combination, a stop motion device, a friction roll, means whereby said roll is rendered effective to control said stop motion, and means for periodically raising said roll to permit a fresh sheet to be inserted beneath the roll.
2. In a printing machine, in combination, a stop motion device, a friction roll, a movable support for said roll, means whereby said roll is rendered effective to control said stop motion, and cam-operated means for periodically moving said support to raise said roll, thereby permitting a fresh sheet to be inserted beneath the roll.
3. In a printing machine, in combination, a sliding rod for controlling the printing operation, a movable member adapted to limit the longitudinal movement of said rod, means controlled by the passage of a sheet through the machine for moving said memher out of operative position, and additional means to lock said member in the position which it occupies when the rod begins its longitudinal movement.

In a printing machine, in combination, a sliding rod for controlling the printing operation, and a wedge movable into position to limit the longitudinal movement of passage of a sheet through the machine for operating said wedge, a lever adapted to lock said wedge in operative position, and means on said rod for engagingand operating the lever.
6. In a printing machine, in combination, a sliding rod for controlling the printing operation, a movable member adapted to limit the longitudinal movement of said rod, means controlled by the passage of a sheet through the machine for moving said member out of operative position, and additional means to lock said member in the position which it occupies when the rodbegins its longitudinal movement, said locking means being moved to release said member at each return of the sliding rod to initial position.
7. In a printing machine, in combination, a sliding rod for controlling the printing operation, a movable member adapted to limit the longitudinal movement of said rod, means controlled by the passage of a sheet through the machine formoving said member out of operative position, additional means to lock said member in the position which it occupies when the rod begins its longitudinal movement, and means by which said sliding rod is effective to periodically unlock said member.
