CARL A. SODERLUND, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ACTUATING DEVICE FOR PRINTING-PRESS THROW-OFF MECHANISM.
I Application filed October 29, 1917. Serial No. 198,938.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. SonnnLUNo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'Actuating Device for Printing-Press Throw-Off Mechanism, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates-to printing presses and more particularly to the type ofpress employing automatic sheet feeders and has for one of its principal objects, the provision of an actuating device for'the throw-off mechanism of the same, which will promptly act to retain the cylinder in a lifted position away from the bed of the press and shutoff further operation of the same upon the inaccurate side register'of the sheet when fed thereagainst.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is adapted to be attached to the ordinary side guides of a press and which is provided with a slotted portion having a gravitational latch which normally obstructs the downward movement of a vertically swinging lever, the gravitational latch being adapted to be actuated bya sheet fed thereagainst, whereby upon proper feeding of the sheet thereagainst, the throwoff mechanism is inactive but upon failure of the sheet to be fed thereagainst, the press will be automatically thrown out of action.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character described, which is providedwith an attaching plate having a base adjus'tably mounted thereon whereby an accurate register of the sheet may be readily had upon adjustment of the base with relation to the. attaching plate.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is provided with a standard rising from the base, said standard being provided with recessed portions adjacent the slotted portion thereof, whereby the gravitational latch mounted therein, may be positively retracted within said slotted portion thus eliminating any possibility of the latch obstructing the downward movement of the vertically swinging lever.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, and which may be readily adapted to any press of the class described which is provided with a throw off mechanism.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts fully described and pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: r
Figure 1 is a perspective of the device showing the same in position upon the press.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view illustrating a portion of the throw-off mechanism with which the device is associated.
Figure 3 is a perspective showing the arrangement of my device relatively to adjacent portions of a press and also showing by dotted lines a sheet of paper.
Figure 4; is a vertical section through the device on the line 414 of Figure 5.
Figuref) is a front elevation of the improved device.
Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 66 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary section of one of the details of the invention, and
Figure 8 is a similar view.
In order to' more clearly point out the operation of my device, I have shown diagrammatically in the drawings, certain essential portions of the throw-off mechanism now in use which is substantially illustrated in the patent to Cross No. 799,457. This mechanism includes a hollow rock shaft (A), surrounding a shaft (13). The shaft (B) has secured to one extremity a lever (D), provided with a ratchet head (E), adapted to co-operate with a pawl (F) which is pivotally mounted on a lever This lever (F) is designed to be rocked through a rod (F from an appropriate part of the press. A. rod (13) is connected with the lever '(D) and is' also connected with appropriate means forcontrolling the lifting of the cylinder, the said means including the rod (1), Figure 2, associated with an arc-uate bar (H) connected to the rods (1)) and (I), and provided with a roller (J) which contacts with the switch K throwing the same out of engagement with the contact L, thus throwing off further operation of the press. A link F connects the lever F with an arm F which is further connected by a link F to a piv ote darm F which is provided with a roller adapted to contact'with the cam}? mounted on 'a moving part of the machine for transmitting the necessary rocking motion to the lever F The pawl F is provided with a suitable pin or lug F which is adapted to normally engage with a slot G in the arm G which is formed on a sleeve G secured to the hollow shaft A. A coiled spring G is adapted to the arm G and operates to tension the arm G in order to retain the in F in active engagement with the slot 6.
My device comprises means for arresting the rocking motion of the shaft (A) upon failure of a sheet being fedsidewise against the device and consists of an attaching plate 10 which is secured to the side guide adjacent to th'e rocking shaft (A) by means of screws 11. Adjustably associated with the attaching plate 10, by means of set screws 12, and slots 13, as a base member 1a, which is provided with a standard 15, rising therefrom, the same being slotted as at 16,
and having its outer face recessed as at 17, Figures 3 and 5. Pivoted within the slotted portion 16, for swinging movement, is an L shaped gravitational latch 18, having a Weighted ortion 19, Which serves to nor- 7 mally pr0 ect the upper extremity of the latch beyond the outer face of the standard 15, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Pivoted to the outer face of'the standard at one side of and immediately above the slot 16, is a swinging lever 20, which is normally projected upwardly againstastop pin 21, by means of a coiled spring 22. The rock shaft (A) has secured thereto adjacent the lever 20 an arm 28, Figure 1, which normally contacts with the lever 20, upon operation of the press and depresses the same against the action of the spring 22, when a sheet is accurately fed against the latch member.
In operation of the device, should the gripper member (C) fail to feed a sheet against the latch 18 it will remain in the path of the lever 20 and prevent the normal downward movement thereof, thus forming a rigid stop against which the arm 23 will contact thereby arresting the rocking motion of the rock shaft (A) to which the arm 23 is connected. This will result in the operation of the throw-off mechanism as heretofore described with the corresponding result.
It will be noted that the recess 17, in the front face of the standard allows the sheet to depress or retract the latch 18 beyond the front surface of the standard, thereby eliminating any possibility ofthe same obstructing the downward .movement of the arm when the paper is properly fed against the device.
While I have illustrated and described a simple and preferred form of carrying my invention into practice, I wish to have it understood that I do not care to be limited to the exact details of construction therein shown but'desire to have it understood that such changes and alterations and changes as fall'within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when desired.
What isclaimed as new is 1. An actuatingdev-ice for a throw-off for printing presses comprising movable means, stop mechanism having means to contact with said movable means, and movable means to hold saidfirst-named movable means against movement and operable by the sheet when said sheet is fed against said second-named movable means to release said first-named movable means and permit it to move.
2. In an actuating device for the throw-off mechanism of printing presses, the combination with a rock shaft and an arm secured to the rock shaft, of means for obstructing the movement of the same including a base having a vertical slotted standard, a lever pivoted thereto, and a pivoted latch member arranged in said slotted portion to normally obstruct the downward movement of the lever and adapted to be retracted under the action of the sheets when properly fed thereagainst to allow free movement of the lever, said standard operably disposing the latch member for sidewise contact of the sheet therewith. Q i

I
4. An actuating device for the throw-off mechanism of printing presses, comprising a rock shaft, an arm attached to said rock shaft, a base member attached to astationary portion of the press having a vertical slotted standard rising therefrom, a' lever pivoted thereto and co-acting with the first mentioned arm, a latch member pivoted within the slotted portion of the standard for obstructing the downward movement of the lever upon failure of a sheet to be properly fed against the latch, whereby to arrest the movement of the rock shaft to cause the operation of the-throw-ofi': mechanism, the said slotted standard serving to dispose the latch member for sidewiseoontact with'the sheet.
An actuating device for a throw-off for printing presses comprising a standard, a
swinging lever pivoted to said standard, stop mechanism having an element normally in contact with said swinging lever, and movable means for normally holding said swinging lever against movement and operable by the sheet when said sheet is fed against said movable means, to release said swinging lever and permit it to move from normal position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
