--lhe present'invention is an improvement in feeder and detector devices for controlling the'feed'of sheets to the front stops of printing or! like machines7 but adapted for use in anyvassociation Where such a device is desired.
The principal object of lthe invention is to provide a simplified sheet detector mechanism at ythe slow-down device and press guides which operatesif the sheet is out of alinement or if the sheet is missing to stop the feeding mechanism and trip the press, or to stop the press yor. both. Heretofore., a part of these detectors has been mounted on the press guides and a part on the front end of the feeder. Their structure and adjustments were complicated. In addition, the detectorfinger engaged the front edge of the sheet before it was positioned against the press.v guides and the action of the detector finger frequently displaced the sheet. ndeed it was sometimes necessary on small sheets `to disconnect the detector. These disadvantages have been obviated and the detector simplified and made more readily adjustable by mounting the complete detector on fthe sheet support and by removing the detector finger from engagement with the sheet preferably by the action ofthe shaft that carries the slow-down mechanism'. As soon as the upper slow-down element is elevated,"the detector nger is removed from engagement with the sheet. A further advantage has been secured b y associating the delivery detector, which operates if the sheet is being improperly delivered from the impression cylinder, with the sheet detector in such a manner that when the delivery detector is operated it will act through the sheet detector to stop the machine bythe same mechanism that is employed by the sheet detector. .f l
Av furtheradvantage is toprovide a simplified, sensitive and yet `positive control mechanismY fortripping and stopping the press under the action of the sheet'and delivery detectory devices. To this end there has been provided a control disk adapted to be released upon the operation of the detectors, and a power device controlled by said not electrically operated means may be associated with the power device for shifting a belt and applyin a brake in addition to the means for tripping the press.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views,it is pointed out that the present application is a division of vco-pending application Serial No. 732,046,
filed August 14, 1924, and that the invention is shown, for purposes of illustration, in association with a. printing press of the well known flat-bed type. The invention is, however, adapted for other uses and purposes. In the apparatus shown, the drive for the various instrumentalities at the forward end of the feed board is preferably obtained from an intermediate gear of the press, which gear is driven from'any suitable source of power 51 through a belt 52 and a pulley 53 mount` e'd on a shaft v54 carrying a pinion 55 which meshes with Vand drives said intermediate gear 50. This intermediate gearl meshes with and drives the cylinder gear 56 mounted on a shaft 57 on which'the impression cylinder 58 is carried. Y
vThe drive of the devices at a forward end of the feed board'is effected through a gear 59that meshes with theintermediate gear 50. Gear 59 has compounded therewith a bevel gear V60 that vmeshes with a bevel gear 61 mounted on one end of a. shaft 62 provided with two universal connections 63 and 64'. The other end of shaft 62 is provided with a gear65 that drives the devices at the forward end of the feed-board through a flexible shaft 66 and gears 67 and 68, the gear 67 being an Vidler gear mounted on the stub shaft 69. Ad-
jacent the gear 65 is a bevel gear 70 that meshes witha bevel gear 71 mounted on the lower end of a short vertical shaft 72 journaled in a gear casing 73 that is pinned to a shaft 74 journaled in'suitable bearings on one of the side frames of the printing press. This shaft 74preferably carries a sheet feeding apparatus such, for example,`as disclosed in co-pending application Serial No. 732,046, filed August 14, 1924. The short vertical shaft 72, through the medium of suitable gearing, serves to drive a conveyor 75 passn ing .over a feed Vboard 76 and delivering the sheets from the pile elevating and sheet feed- .ing mechanism to the front stops of the press. The conveyor-75 and feed board 76y may be of any suitable construction, but the same 'are preferably of the type disclosed in the copending'application above referred to.
The flexible shaft 66 carries on its forward end a bevel gear 77 that meshes with a bevel gear 78 on a stub shaft 7 9 that carries a pinion 8 0 meshing with a gear 81 carried by a stub shaft 82. This gear 81 is provided with a cam groove 83 .on itsvouter faceV in which engages a roller 84 carried by an arm 85 secured on the end of a shaft 86 journaled in 81 is formed a second lgroove 88 (Fig. 4) 'in f `which engages a roller 89 carried inV the free end of an arm 90 mounted on a'tube 91 also journaled in suitable bearings on the Vforward end of the feed board 76. The tube 91 is thus oscillated by the described connections therefor with the gear 81, and on this tube .91 .is mounted the upper members 92 of slow-down,
Ysheet straightening and registering mechanism such as disclosed for example in the .copending application above referred to. Meshing with gear'Sl is a pinion 93.1nounted on one end of the shaft 94 which is journaled in 4suitable bearings on theforward end-0f the feed board 76 at the under side thereof, This shaft 94 carries and drives ythe lower members 95 and 96 of the slow-down and-side registering devices above referred to. Y
The sheet detector of the present invention operates to trip the press or other instrumentality in the event 'that no sheet `is delivered to the press guides V97. `Each of these guides is carried by .an arm 98 mounted on the front guide shaft 99 mounted 'insuitable bearings on the sideframes of the Vpress above the impression cylinder 58. -Thisiguide shaft is periodically raised and lowered duringthe normal operation of the machine and `each press guide has a pair of curved spring mem-` bers 100 which straddle and bear upon a tongue 101projecting fromthe forward edge of the feed board adjacent Ithelower slow# down member Vor rollers 95 and 96. 'In'the event that vthe sheet is improperly presented to the 4press guides, the sheet detector, by tripping the press, prevents .the operation of the impression cylinder.
This detector mechanism 'preferably comprises an arm 102 which is carried bythe tube 91 that carries the slow-down,straightening and vregistering mechanism and is Vsecured thereon by means ofa set 4screw S103 which bears on a key 104 carried ina keyway 105 of the tube 91 (Figs-r6'and 7). This-arm 102 is provided with an extension 106 which is adjustable 'longitudinally ofthe arm`l02 by means of a pin and slot connection 107. A
rod 108 is carried in the -tube91 Lto rotate independent-ly thereof, and to this -rod there is secured in any desired manner, as fby a screw threaded connection, an'arm 109.` The arm 109 is in two parts andvmayfbe'lengthened orshoifened'by'meansV of a sleeve i110 andan adjustingscrew `111. In the free end of the arm 109 is pivoted at 112 "a pend'antfl'l. Also mounted onthe pivot 1,12 isaV second pendant 114 which is normally'held--in the position shown in 'full lines in Figli.
vThe varm 102 -being lcarried by the tube i951 through the lower end of the cylinder 133 that carries the slow-down and sheet straightening and registering mechanism, it will be appreciated that said arm is vertically oscillated with the slow-down and sheet straightening and registering mechanism. Just before the sheet reaches the press guides and after it has been'operated upon by theslowdown and sheet straightening and registering mechanism, the front edge of the sheet engages the-pendant 113 and swings it toward the left as seen in Fig. 4. This permits the arm V102 to freely rise .as the tube 91 is oscillated. In the event that no sheet comes in contact with the pendant 113, the parts will remain in the position shown in Fig. 6, with the end of the extension 106 engaging the shoulder 115 on the pendant 113. Accordingly, as the arm 102 is elevated, the arm 109 will likewise be elevated thus rotating the vrod 108. The rotation of the rod 108 effects the tripping of the press.
' On the end of the rod 108 is mounted an arm 116 (Fig. 4) between the free end of which and the Jfeed board is a compression spring 117 thattends to hold the arm 109 in the position shown in Fig. 6. Also mounted on the end of the rod 108 is a second arm 118 to which is pivoted a depending part 119. VThe lower end of this depending part is provided with a hook 120 over which engages one end of a link 121, the other end of the link being secured to one arm 122 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 123 (Fig. 8). The other arm 124 of the bell crank lever carries aroller 125 that engages in a notch or cutout portion 126 in a cam disk 127 pivoted on a stub shaft 128, carried in a casting 129 secured to one of the side frames of the press.
This cam disk 127 is provided with a cam slot 130 in which engages a roller 131 mounted on the upper end of a power device. This -power device includes a plunger 132 which projects into a cylinder 1.33 of the casting 129 and carries a piston 134 between which Vand the top of the cylinder there is confined a *compression spring 135 which normally tends to force the parts associated therewith downwardly.
The lower end of the plunger 132 projects and is connected to the upper end of a link 136, the lower end of which is connected to a lever 137 ,pivoted at 138, which lever is provided with a cam face 139 that engages the edge 1400i a foot treadle 141 carried on the upper' end of a treadle arm 142.v This treadle arm passes through an opening 143 in a foot board 144 and is provided on each side with a lin 145,v the lins being spaced from the lower side of the treadle a distance corresponding approximately tothe thickness of the foot board 144. As will be hereinafter more fully described, when the treadle 141 is depressed the fins 145 will engage the under imperforate part of the foot board and hold the parts in a depressed, locked position.
The lower end of the foot treadle arm 142 1s pivoted to the free end of an arm 146 which is carried on a vtransverse shaft 147,
and a spring 148 connected at one end to the ed a lever 150 provided with a cam slot 151 that engages a roller 152 carried on an arm 153, the operation of which trips the press in any usual or well known manner. Through the connections described the impression cylinder will be tripped. Power is preferably cut off either by opening or closing the electric circuit, as the case may be, when the plunger 132 is depressed.
Carried on the upper end of the plunger 132 is a transverse arm 154 in the free end of which is carried a rod 155 provided with a cam face 156 that is adapted to rock a bell crank lever pivoted at 157 One arm 158 of the bell crank lever carries the switch contacts o1' other means for opening or shown in Fig. 8. As the plunger 132 is lowered, the cam 156 will engage the roller 160 and rock the bell crank lever to open the contacts.
.The member 155 is made adjustable in the arm 154 by means of a set screw 162. The reason for this is that it is sometimes necessary to operate on an open circuit arrangement. When this is the case the cam 156 will normally engage the roller 160 to hold the arm 158 away from the contacts. Under these conditions, when the plun er 132 is loweredy the power will be cut off y engagement of the contacts, this being effected by the cam surface 156 passing out of engagement with the roller 160.
As the plunger 132 is lowered by spring 135, when roller 125 is released from the notch 126 of disk 127, it will be understood vthat the treadle lever will be depressed lfected by bearing down ony the pedal member 163 which will rock the lever 137 around the pivot 138, thus returning the'plunger and llii 'lit
associated jparts to their uppermostV position and automaticallyl repositioning the roller i125 inthe notch V126', the roller snapping into this .position under the influence of asprin'g .164 which encircles the .pivot 123. ,After this has'been edected, the press cylinder is released by movingthe foot treadle slightly to .the right so thatzthe fins 145 vvillv again .as-V
-sume-'theposition shown in full lines in `Fig. 7,.under the inhijenCeoft-he spring 148.
It is vpointed out that the .roller 131 that engages and ridesin the camvvay 13() is not positioned inexact lalinement With .the stub shaft .128, lbutis arranged slightly eccentric thereto as clearly shown in the dotted line .position 131 inFig. y10. The reason for this isfto insurea facility of rotation of thecam 4disk 127 when ther roller 125 is rocked'fout of -engagementvvith they notch 126. f-
VIn view of the factthatthe roller 131 is Ymountedso nearly concentric-With the axis of the shaftq128,itrequires very little edort to remove the Vroller 125 from the notch 1:26. In' View -ofnthenecessity for a lstrong spring VV-liand in .vievv ofthe fact that it is desirable to release the spring by a very slight effort, it Will be appreciated that the particular eccentric mounting of the roller 131 Iwith respect to the axis ojf the stub shaft128 -is a :matter of importanceinasmuch as it securesa firm and positive control of a large .force 'in ai positive and yet sensitivemanner. While thedevice, as illustrated, is shown in association With .a control for an electriccir-k cuit, it Will be understood thatmany presses are ydri-veniby .beltipovver and that this same lmechanismis adapted forthe shifting of the .beltfrom atight to aloose pulley.. y

ln order to insure the proper engagementV of the sheets with the pendant 113, there is prefer aly provided a-plate 177 (Figs. 6 and 7) mounted oiiva bracket 178 carried by a T- slot -bar 17,9'secured on the forward endof vfeedboard.
