To (ZZZ 1071107771 it may concern Be it known that 1, Horny A. lVIsn ll'oon, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Automatic Tripping Mechanism for Bed-and-Platen Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This is a division of my patent application Serial No. (301,807 on automatic feed ing mechanism for bed and platen presses, filed Jan. 10, 1911.
The principal objects of this invention are to p'roviiile a job press with an automatic tripping mechanism so constructed that the machine will. be suitable for all kinds oi work for which job presses are ordinarily employed and will also be capable o'l eliicient and satisfactory operation.
The invention also involves improvements in the automatic tripping device whereby the two printing members of the press will be ciiicicntly and accurately prevented from coming into contact when the machine per ates without feeding a sheet, and improvements in details of construction of the various parts, as will appear hereinafter.

The invention is shown as applied to ajob press having a frame 10, a main shaft Serial llol 700,185.
11 provided with pinions 12 transmitting power through gears 13 to the operating shaft l-las usual. On each gear 18 is a stud connected by alink 10 with a rocker arm 17 for supporting the bed of a printing couple. The links 16 and rocker arms 17 are connected by an eccentric 18 with which is rigidly connected an arm 19, the purpose of which will be explained hereinalter. The rocker arm 17 is moved to and from the platen 20 in the usual manner.
The mechanism for operating the reciprocating feed table will not be described indctail as it forms no part of this case.
The register table 85 may be of any usual construction. It is hung loosely on shaft 70 by means of arms 80. Feed rolls 63 feed the paper ovr the register table. The register table tapes and feed rolls (not shown) are operated from one of the gears 13 by a train ot' gearing 89.
The trip device for operating the arm 19 and the eccentric 18 when a sheet of paper is not fed over the register table 85 is mainly supported by brackets 90 and 91 on the frame. The latter bracket is supported at the bottom by a boss 92. The brackets 90 are connected by a shaft 93. On this shaft are fixed by set screws 94: or the like a pair ot oscillatable arms 95. These arms are forked at the bottom so as to be provided with two projections 90 and 97. The projection 9G adjustably supports a guide 98 at the bottom for engaging the top of the sheet as it is fed down over the register table. This guide is adjusted by a screw 99 as will be obvious. On each projection 96 also is supported a screw 100 which engages a jaw 101 pivotally mounted on a stud 102 on the arm 95. On the opposite side of this is a projection which engages a spring 103, the opposite end of which bears on the projection 97. This jaw 101 is thus adjustably fixed on the 'arm although capable of yielding toward the projection 97. Mounted also to swing on the stud 102 is a detector finger 105 having a weighted end 106 for normally holding it in the position shown in Fig. 4:. The pivotal motion or this jaw is limited by a slot and stud 107. Moving with this detector is a hook 108. This hook is normally held in position just at the end of a wedge-shaped point 109 on the end of an arm 110. The two arms 110 are mounted to swing freely on the shaft 93 and are provided wlth integral pro ections on which is mounted a rod 111. This rod has fixed on it also two yokes 112 which are mounted to freely swing about the shaft 93 as a. center. On these yokes are ad ustable stops 113 which engage the brackets to limit the inward motion of the point 109. One of these yokes is provided with a long arm 116 which is connected by a wire rod 117 with a lever 118. This lever is mounted to swing on a stud 119 and is provided with a nose 120 on the opposite side of this stud. This nose is adapted to lift a freely oscillatable jaw 121 by means of a pin 122 thereon which the nose can engage when the opposite end of the lever 118 is depressed. The result of this action is to lift a tooth 123 on this aw high enough to disengage it from a latch 121- iixed on a shaft 125. This permits a spring 126 wound around this shaft to turn the shaft. This turning of the shaft causes an arm 127 thereon to swing through a certain are. A. projection 128 on that arm, engaging in a groove on the end of a sliding stud 129, causes that stud to slide in its bearings 130. The direction of this motion of the stud 129 is inward and it brings it into a position in which the arm 19 will engage it as the bed moves up to the platen. This turns the arm and the eccentric 18 and swings back the bed and the rocker arm 17 so that the bed will not touch the platen when it swings up toward it. As will be obvious from what has been said before, all this is caused by the failure of a sheet to move the detector into the bosition shown in Fig. 3. If the sheet is not present the detector remains separated from the jaw 101 and the hook 108 remains up so on the next oscillation of the arms 95 the hooks 108 engage the projection 109 and oscillate the arms and the rod 111, causing the above men tioned operation.
Grippers 135 are shown in position to take the sheets from the feed table. These are not illustrated in detail as they are constructed and operated in accordance with any of the ordinary machines on the market.
For the purpose of operating the tripping device, one of the gears 13 is connected by a train or gearing 140 with a shaft 141 at the bottom of the frame. This shaft is provided with a cam 142 having two grooves in each of which a cam roller operates. One of these cam rollers is on a lever 143 which reciprocates a rod 14%. This rod oscillates an arm 14:5 loosely mounted on the shaft 93. This arm has a lug 1%16 thereon. On the shaft is adjustably fixed by set screws 14-7 an arm 1 18 which projects out over the lug 1-16. A spring 149 normally holds the arm 148 down on the lug 14:6 or as near thereto as it can come in view of a stud 150 on the shaft 93 which is adjusted up to a step 151. In operation the shaft 93 is set by hand until the front gages come to proper position, and the collar on which the stud 150 is located is adjusted until the stud engages the step 151, and fastened. This brings the arm 14:8 into a certain definite position with respect to the lug 1 16, and the first part of the upward oscillation of the arm is lost motion but the latter part results in oscillating the shaft. The cam 14:2 operates a lever 153 which controls a link 15% that o 'ierates the side register 155, the details of which are not herein shown.
On the shaft at the bottom of the oscillating rocker arm 17 is an arm 160 which operates a rod 161 on which is adapted to be fixed a nut or the like 162. After the trip mechanism has operated as described above, the next upward movement of this rod causes the nut 162 to engage an arm 163 on the shaft 125 and restore the arm 12'? and plunger 129 to normal inoperative position. After that the rod 161 reciprocates without performing any function. Its top end is guided by an opening in the arm 163. The arm 19 and eccentric 18 are restored to normal position by a spring 165, against the force of which they are turned when the arm 19 engages the plunger 129. This spring brings the arm back to a stop 166.
The operation of this part of the device will be readily understood. Consider the parts in normal position, that is, with the lingers 105 separated from the jaws 101 and the hooks 108 up in their highest position. Every time a sheet is fed through, the detectors 105'are moved by the sheet and the hooks 108 depressed so that the arms 95 oscillate without affecting the arms 110. If, however, the machine operates without feeding a sheet, the hooks 108 remain up and the oscillation of the arms 95 causes these hooks to engage the ends 109 of the arms 110 so that these latter arms are oscillated with the arms 95 and the rod 111 is moved. This causes the lever 118 to be operated as will be obvious to raise the nose and lift the jaw 121 from the tooth 124:. This allows the spring 126 to turn the shaft which operates the arm 12? and pushes the plunger 129 in to a position in which it is in the path of the arm 19. This turns the arm 19 and the eccentric 18 and prevents the bed coming into contact with the plunger 0n the neXt operation of the press. Then the operation of the rod 161 retracts the plunger as has been described so that thereafter the press can operate in the usual way.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am aware that many modifications maybe made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and de scribed, but

In a bed and platen printing press, the combination with the platen, a rocker arm, means for rocking the latter, and a bed carried by said rocker arm, of an eccentric on the rocker arm to control its contact with the platen, an oscillating operating means altixed on said eccentric, a movable element normally held out of the path of movement of said operating means, a mechanism actuated by sheets fed into the press, normally idle elements mounted adjacent said mechanism and connected to said movable element, and means to latca said normally idle elements with said sheet actuated mechanism to cause the actuation of said movable element into the path of said operating means upon the failure of a sheet to pass into the press. In a. bed and platen printing press, in combination with the platen, a rocker arm, and a bed mounted on the rocker arm. of an eccentric on the rocker arm for controlling the contact of the bed with the platen, normally idle means for swinging said eccentric on its axis, a sheet operated controlling mechanism. means for causing the operative actuation of said eccentric operating means. and a mechanism for locking said sheet operated controlling mechanism with said means for causing the operative actuation of the eccentric operating means on the failure of a sheet to pass into the press.

In a bed and platen printing press, the combination with the platen, rocker arm, and bed mounted on the rocker arm. of an eccentric on the rocker arm for adjusting the bed, an arm connected with the eccentric for operating it. a movable plunger for engaging the arm when the bed moves up to ard the platen to swing the arm and eccentric on their axes. whereby the rocker arm will be moved back. an oscillatable shaft, an arm on said shaft for operating the plunger, a spring for turning the shaft inone direction, and a trip device controlled by the passage of a sheet through the press for preventing the spring from operating.

In a bed and platen printing press, the. combination with the platen, rocker arm, and bed mounted on the rocker arm, of means on the rocke' arm for adjusting it, an arm connected with said means for operating it, a movable plunger, a shaft having an arm therein for moving the pluninto the path of said arm, means controlled by the passage of a sheet through the press for preventing said shaft from moving, and means connected with the rocker arm for restoring the plunger to inoperative position.

In a bed and platen printing press. the combination with a bed, platen and register table of a rocker arm. means for rocking said arm. a bed carried by the rocker arm, meanson the rocker arm for controlling its contact with the platen when moved toward the same. an oscillating means for operating said means on the rocker arm, a movable element adapted to engage and operate said operating means, and. mechanism normally controlled by the passage of sheets over said register table for holding said movable element out of the path of said operating means, comprising normally idle elements connected with said movable element. and means for latching said normally idle elements with said sheet actuated me hanism to cause the actuation of said movable element into the path of said operating means upon the failure of a sheet to pass into the press.

In a bed and platen press. the combination with the bed and platen. of a transversely reoiprocable plunger. means for projecting said plunger. means controlled by the passage of a sheet through the press for holding said plunger retracted. a roclcer arm on which the bed is located. and means on the rocker arm adapted to engage said plunger when projected for shiftingthe position of the arm.
9. In a bed and platen press, the combination with the bed and platen, of a trans versely reciprocable plunger, means for projecting said plunger means controlled by the passage of a sheet through the press for holding said plunger retracted, a rocker arm on which the bed is located, means on the rocker arm adapted to engage said plunger when projected for shifting the position of the rocker arm, and means operated by the rocker arm at each complete oscillation there of for retracting the plunger when it is pro jected.
10. In a bed and platen press, the combination with the bed and platen, oi a plunger, means for projecting said plunger, a rocker arm on which the bed is located, means adapted to engage said plunger when projected for shifting the position of the rocker arm, an arm oscillatable with the rocker arm, a rod mounted on said arm and reciprocated thereby, means for guiding the upper end of said rod, said rod having a projection, and an arm connected with said means for pro jecting the plunger in position to be engaged by said projection and restored to normal position when the rod rises.
11. In a bed and platen press, the combination with a register table, of a movable detector adapted to be engaged and positively moved by a sheet as it moves over the register table, said detector having a hook movable therewith, a suspended support for said detector, means for moving said support at each operation of the press, a trip mechanism suspended with said support, and means in position to be operated by said hook when the detector is in normal position and not moved by a sheet, for operating said trip mechanism.
12. In a bed and platen press, the combination with a register table, of a movable detector adapted to be engaged and moved by a sheet as it moves along the register table, said detector having a hook, a suspended support for said detector, means for moving said support at each operation of the press, a trip mechanism capable of movement with said support, and means in position to be operated by said hook when the detector is in normal position for operating said trip mechanism, said means being in a position not to be engaged by the hook when the detector and hook are operated. by a sheet passing along the register table.
13. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a register table, of a swinging arm, a detector pivoted on said arm, means for normally holding said detector in position to be engaged by a sheet passing over the register table, said detector having a hook thereon and located so as to be swung on its avis by a sheet pass ing over the register table, and a trip controlling device capable of movement with said swinging arm located in position to be engaged and ope ated by said hook whenever the arm operates in the absence of a sheet on the register table.
H. In a device of the character described, the combination of an oscillatable arm, a detector pivoted thereon having a hook projecting therefrom and having its weight so distributed as normally to hold the hook up, said detector being in position to be en gaged and moved by a sheet passing so as to lower the hook, and an arm located in position to be locked to said first named arm by said hook when the first named arm oscillates with the detector in normal position, and to be escaped by said hook when it oscillates with the detector down.
15. In a device of the character described, the con'lbinationof an arm, a detector thereon having a hook projecting therefrom and having its weight so distributed as normally to hold the hook up, said detector being in position to be engaged and moved by a sheet so as to lower the hook, an arm located in position to be locked to said first named arm by said hook when the first named arm oscillateswith the detector in normal position, and to be escaped by said hook when it oscillates with the detector down, and means for adjusting the limiting position of the last named arm.
16. In a device of the character described, the combination of an oscillatable arm, a jaw adjustably mounted and projecting therefrom, a detector adjacent to said jaw and pivotally mounted on the arm, a hook on the detector, and a second arm in position to be engaged by said hook when the first arm swings it the hook is in normal position, but to be escaped thereby if the hook has been moved from normal position, and a trip mechanism controlled by the second arm.
17. In a device of the character described, the combination of an oscillatable arm, a detector pivoted thereon having a hook normally held up, said detector being in position to be engaged and moved by a sheet so as to lower the hook, an arm located in position to be engaged and moved by said hook when the first named arm oscillates with the detector in normal position, and to be escaped by said hook when it oscillates with the detector down, a shaft on which said arms are mounted, a rod movable with the-second arm, a lever connected with said rod and adapted to be moved thereby when the second arm swings, a latch adapted to be reeiprocated by the movement of said lever, a spring normally held in inoperative position by said latch, and a plunger connected with said spring to be operated thereby.
18. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a shaft, an arm fixed thereon, an arm loosely mounted on the shaft, means for oscillating" the loosely mounted arm, means on the loosely mounted arm for oscillating the fixed arm with it when the press operates without feeding a sheet, whereby when said shaft will be rocked, a lever, means movable by said shaft for oscillating the lever, a latch normally held in inoperative position by the lever and adapted to be released by the movement 10 of said lever, a plunger, and means controlled by said latch for operating the plunger when the latch is released.
