1 '0 aZZ whom it may con cern Be it known that I, ALBERT L. Snssrons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Strap-Fastening Plate or like Structure, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of de vices to which straps or like parts are secured, which parts are commonly used in harness or like structures, and the object oi the invention is to provide a device of this class having novel features of advantage and utility.
One form of device in the use of which the objects sought may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure l is a view showing a sheet metal blank of proper shape to form a plate. The invention herein shown and described embodies means for constructing a sheet metal plate, which is peculiarly adapted as a fastening for straps or like parts common to harness and analogous structures, this plate, although formed from sheet metal being particularly strong and soconstructed that the parts attached or secured thereto shall not be unduly worn or injured. The construction of the plate enables it to be formed from sheet metal, the structure thus containing a minimumamount of material but at the same time being extremely sightly and neat in appearance- The invention maybe readily applied to various forms of structures and is therefore not limited in its use to plates of the kind herein shown but which have been selected for the purpose of disclosingthe invention merely onacco'unt of the adaptability of the Specification of Letters Patent.

illustrated herein the blank is of less width at the end 9 than at the end 10, an opening 11 being formed in the narrow end and an opening 12 in the wide end. The edges of each of these openings nearest the end of the plate are provided with means to pre vent wear of a strap or the like secured to the plate' and which is in the form of a cover rounded to provide a smooth surface to engage such strap or other part. In con structing this cover for the edge of the opening 11 a projection 13 at the end of the blank 8 is bent backward, passed through said opening and its edge located close to the plate at or near the end thereof, as plainly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The curved protection for the edge of the pening 12 is formed from a piece 14: lo- :ated within the boundaries of the blank, which piece is folded against the side of the bar 15 and'passing through the opening 12 has its end located on the opposite side ofthe bar from the fold and at or near the end of the plate, as shown in Fig. 3. Either or both or" the openings 11 or 12 may have their ends formed in either manner, as hereinabove described to provide a protection for a strap engaged within the opening, both being different or alike, as may be desired.
The edges of the openings formed as above described provide rolls or like curved surfaces 16, 17 on which the strap or like part is located.
The plate may also be rounded as to the parts located at the sides of either or both of the openings 11 and 12. These rounded side parts may be formed in various ways. As shown with respect to the opening 12,
wings 18 are formed on opposite sides of the blank, and these are bent around to form the rounded side parts 19. Wings 20 are formed on opposite sides of the opening 11, and these are bent around to form the rounded side parts 21, the side bar being curved-as shown in Fig. 2, and the parts 19 and 21 comprising reinforcements for the metal at the sides of said. openings.
If preferred, the edge of either or both of the openings may be finished by either this construction or that shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and hereinafter described which will l. l (l produce a plate of a strength well adapted to withstand the strains to which it may be subjected, but if it shall be desired to further increase and stiffen the parts, the edge of the shield 17 may be abutted against or behind a lip 30 formed on the end oi the bar 15, a'projection 31 being formed on the blank 8 for this purpose. It will be understood, however, that this lip may be dispensed with in a great many instances and need only be used when extreme rigidity and strength is required.
If desired the blank may be provided with aloop 25 for the attachment of any of the harness straps in connection with which the plate may be conveniently located, such device being adapted for use in various locations where two straps are joined and extending in the same general direction and a third strap extending laterally thereto.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 the roll 26 is formed the same as above-described with respect to the opening 12, this roll being strengthened by means of a rivet or rivets 27 passing through all of the parts and holding them securely together.
In the form of device shown in Figs. 6 and 7 my improved construction is shown as applied to a hook formed from sheet metal in which the inner part 28 of the curved part of the hook 29 is formed by a fold similar to that shown with respect to the opening 12 in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings, the metal forming this fold being supplied from metal which in the blank was located between the extreme point of the hook and the part adjacent to the shank on the opposite side from said point.
It will be noted that the improvement herein illustrated and described provides a plate for the purpose intended which may i be readily formed from. sheet metal and which, while being as a whole comparatively light, yet is sulliciently strong at the parts receiving the greater properly withstand such strains, and the plate is so formed that the straps engaged therewith are not subject to undue wear.
In the form of device shown in Figsr8 and 9 the sides of the opening are provided with a shield 24 which is formed by bending a part from within the opening in the plate to any desired extent to provide-such shield, and as shown in lFig. 9 the plate may be depressed slightly in forming the shield so that the plane of the plate will lie in the center of the roll.

It is not necessary in order to embody the invention that the entire structure shall be employed as either of the openings may be omitted, and asniay also the loop 25.
1. A sheet metal plate comprising asingle layer having an opening therein to receive an attachment, and a shield for an edge of the opening, said shield being formed from an integral part of said plate and bent over an edge of said opening.
2. A plate formed from sheet metal with an opening therein to receive an attachment and a. shield for an edge of the opening formed from an integral part of said plate and bent from an edge of the plate around over the inner edge of the opening.
3. A plate formed from sheet metal with an opening therein constructed and arranged to receive an attachment, and a shield formed from an integral part of said plate and bent from within the opening over .an edge thereof to constitute said shield.

6. A sheet metal platecomprising a single thickness of metal with an opening therein, a shield for an edge of the opening formed from an integral part of said plate A and bent over the edge at the end of the opening, and rolls integrally formed from said metal and located at the side edges of said opening.

10. A sheet metal structure comprising a plate of metal of a single thickness having an opening with an edge arranged to receive an attached part, said edge having a shield formed from an integral part of the plate and extending over said edge, the plate at each side of said opening being reinforced by metal on each side thereof.
11. A plate formed from sheet metal With an opening at each end thereof and a lip formed at the side, shields for the edges of said openings formed from an integral part of the plate and bent over the edges of the openings, and a reinforcement for the metal on each side of one of said openings, said 1einforcement being formed by metal bent from Within the opening.
